I have some that do that also. Like yours they are quite an "unfancy" variety from Walmart (gold with a brown ring).

I have planted these proliferations and grown new plants. Unfortunately, I moved away from that house and didn't get to see how long it took them to bloom.

They will bloom in a year or two. Usually it takes two years.

Not bad for a freebie, especially if it is a desirable prolif. ! What a breath of fresh air! Until now this word has had such a negative connotation for me...nuclear (pronounced with 3 syllables) proliferation.

I had no idea daylilies did this. None of mine has, and it's not as though I deadhead them or anything (ha! like that's going to happen in this world). I don't have very many kinds, just the H. fulva, the orange double Kwanso, commuter daylily, and maybe five other kinds. I ordered some new ones this summer, so maybe some of those will.

Out of lots of varieties, only one of mine does this. We need to hear from folks with 200+ different hybrids.

Isn't this the same thing that spiderplants do? Sounds as though division is still by far the best way to get new plants.

You can cut them off with about 3-4 inches of stalk and put them in water. They root very easily. But Alicia is right, division is easier. For my part, I have found that very few do it and the ones that do are fast multipliers anyway. I still root and plant some but it would be nice if some of my favorties would do this. -Ais.

Thank you all for your comments. We are going to pot up these two 'proliferation thingys' up just for fun. I always use division to increase my supply of day lillies and will probably have a bunch for the spring swap meet. This was just very unusual and who better to get an answer than the "Carolina gardening" forum :):)

Sometimes prolifs do not look like their parents. Some plants throw prolifs every year and sometimes it is a quirk. Sometimes you can get 6-10 prolifs on a plant but usually it is one or two. I only get them on a small percentage of my plants.

Will try to nurse the pretty proliferated plant (that's an alliteration, yanno ;) ) and see how it weathers the winter. Glad I could contribute to the 'word of the day', also.

A proliferation is an exact genetic match of the plant it proliferated from. Exact. It is just like a division. I have over 400 daylily cultivars and see this all the time.
