well at least my 80+ ornamental Kale are looking better with every freeze :)

Barry what the heck do you do with 80 ornamental kale? They are beautiful and we sell them like mad in the fall. They sell almost as well as the mums but 80 of them???? That's the great thing about these forums. You realize that there's a lot of people who go as overboard as yourself here. lol

I've never enjoyed the cold and like it even less as I get older. I don't like any cold weather sports. I water ski but you'd never see me on a pair of sticks on a snow covered hill and I can ice skate at an indoor rink thank you very much. lol

I'm originally from upstate new york (born in syracuse) and let me tell you, you don't know cold, snow or the true meaning of winter until you've experienced a little thing called "lake effect snowfall."

Ewww, lake effect snow - wind chills at -30. . .haven't experienced that in a few years here. Man those days when the nose hair freezes - the ice forms on the eyelashes and as soon as you walk in the door - the blast heaters melt the ice AND YOUR MASCARA all down your face.

According to the Almenac, we're supposed to get heavier than normal "precipitation" - meaning snow. Yikes.

My dats look so lonely outside - two little pots sitting by themselves - among the tons of fallen leaves - used to be surrounded by monster brugs. . .

I may go get them and put them inside just so I don't have to look at the lonely little sticks/pots out in the yard. . . .

Oh Karyn I hope your plant survives. Thats funny you didn't know it was out there though. I don't know how you keep up with all your plants, lol.

Mine stay outdoors in the ground and mine take many freezes. I cut back the mush, it goes dormaint and next year its bigger and better than ever. Hopefully youll be just fine.

Hey Karyn, since you already cut that double back, how about cutting it back about 6 or 7 more inches and sending me a cutting of it. (grin)

I hate the cold, I freeze if it's below 70. Ya'll all want a good laugh? I'll give ya'll a visual. If it's below 65 I sleep with the electric blanket on high, wooley booger socks on my feet, and a toboggan on my head. I've also been known to pull all the covers up over my head with the hat on too. I'm old and can't take the cold. Did I mention the flannel sheets and the super thick fuzzy P.J's and sometimes even gloves. And I use to think the ladies that wrapped their hair in toilet paper so they wouldn't mess it up looked funny.LOL

I scare myself when I take the hat off and my hair is stuck to my head but it also has the frizzies sticking out every direction. Bed head has a whole new meaning....

Gee, I haven't even had a frost here and the past few days it's been in the 80's. I'm not sure it's going to get cold here before Christmas. I remember a couple of times it was like summer weather when Christmas did roll around. Talk about a real bummer....It's hard to imagine snow, and the North Pole, Santa, reindeer and so forth in The Texas heat.

Now you know how a cold old women dress for bed. More than any of you ever wanted or needed to know. LOL

I decided to have an all year round garden, so I planted seed of 3 varieties of ornamental Kale, in a separate bed, and then on a planting bench outside. As needed I potted, repotted, and planted in the spaces along the garden border, as the season progressed, and space became available.

Barry, those are so pretty! I planted one in a container at the shop with some mums. They look terrible but the Kale looks great. I think I will rip it out and plant the whole thing in kale.

Wow, I love the Kale too. Is it edible or just ornamental? I have never seen it before. Note to self...have a spare patch calling ou for kale....ebay here we come....again!!

Purplenana my garage is so full of other stuff there's no room for the cars so I still have to warm it up on the driveway. I just noticed that you are in zone 3/4. Where are you? Just hearing those zones gives me the chills! The temp is pretty nice out today, it's in the 60's but that's about as low as I can stand it. The happiest I'd been was when my two older kids were old enough to go play in the snow by themselves. I used to dread having to take them sledding and building snowmen and all that other cold weather crap. Brrrrrrrrr!!!!! They are even old enough to take their little brother out so I don't even have to walk through the nasty white stuff. Marian I'm picturing you bundled up for bed. That's the only time I like the cold. I need a cold room to sleep in and I leave the bedroom window open all winter. I'm one of those people who continually flip my pillow to get the cold side against my face. My DD found a "pillow chiller" at some store and bought it for me. It's this thing that you slide in your pillowcase. It's great, like an ice pack in your pillow : )

Hi Karyn, Its zone 3,4,5. They say the zone is changing here. I'm in Woodbury, a suburb of Mpls/St. Paul. I've never seen another brug around here. A couple daturas. My granddaughter and I went knocking on a door to beg seeds but no one was home. That was before I found this web. Today is suppose to hit 60 and then they predict its all over. Must get the Christmas lights up (not turned on yet) and the garage cleaned out so yes we can park in it. I go thru this more than messy garage stuff every fall. Do you know of any one else from my area that loves brugs? I can't be the only one here. Trude

Karyn, it occurs to me that you have lived entirely too long up north. Since I moved to Mississippi I have been amazed at the growing season here. Brugs are still blooming like crazy, and spring comes very early. Imagine all the brugs that you could grow and sell here and ship everywhere. Moving here from northern Virginia where it still gets snow and ice, I've been amazed. It's probably been years since there was any snow here.

And lovely, pleasant people. And McComb, Mississippi is a certified retirement community as well. I should have moved here with my family many years ago. Reminds me of something I heard awhile back about making a choice of where to live. The person said, "You ever heard of anyone retiring to the north?" I thought, "Hello ????" Where the hell have I been all my life?

It occurs to me that there is a perfect word to describe my decisions to live in other places across the country, and that word is "stupid !!" :)

Karyn, you were kind enough to send me some dat seeds last spring after I found the Brugmansia Forum and found out what a dat is. They have been such a JOY and I plan to share the seeds in a week or two.

Jim I'm so glad you are enjoying the daturas. We've been very tempted to move south. As a matter of fact about 4 years ago we had a real estate agent looking for houses for us in Weston, FL. That all changed when I found out I was expecting another child....oops! There was no way that I was moving away from friends and family with a baby on the way. There's also the public school system for us to consider because all 3 of our kids are young. If we moved south we'd probably have to put the kids in private school. Honestly except for the cold weather, which I absolutely hate, this is a perfect place to live.
