debating with my mother-in-law about her clematis

enjoy

I love my mother-in-law so please don't think I am in any way bashing her.

She has 2 clematis that are very well established (7 years old or more) both are dark purple. One I am certain is Jackmani and the other I am not certain but it looks very much like the jack except it has a different texture to the leaves. Both grow like crazy.

She chops both vines to the ground every fall and "hopes they will die" because they are too big and the one only has one flush of flowers a year where the other is in bloom most of the summer.

I say try not pruning the one that only flushes once a summer to see if it might be one that flowers on old and new growth. However, she is adamant that since it didn't reflower the first year that it never will. What do you think?

Also, is it possible to divide clematis in fall or early spring? I have never been lucky enough to want or need to. If so, is there a "best" way to do that?

Is there a website that gives info on what clems bloom on old and new wood so I can direct her there?

Thanks
