Best way to store glad bulbs & elephant ears over winter?
Comments (2)Dry and cool will work for both. Don't freak out if they try to start growing in February. Just keep them away from light and they should do fine. The only time I refrigerate is when I want to start something earlier than when the ground warms up normally. I have just removed(last week) Amaryllis from fridge and potted up for Christmas blooms. I have also put Mandevilla, Angel Trumpets, Bananas and Musaenda in garage(unheated) for winter storage. They will go dormant but stay alive and well for earlier start in spring....See MoreWhere do I keep my Elephant ear and CANA bulbs over winter?
Comments (4)jpe118 - they took a long time to get going this year because it was a cold spring. Put them in the closet, after they've dried, keep them away from ALL light. I place them in a paper lined plastic milk crate, with a large black plastic bag over them, and tucked in on the sides, to keep them completely in the dark. They do still start to sprout in late winter....See MoreElephant Ear Plant Winter Hardness??
Comments (5)probably is the species c. esculenta. it should not be hardy for you outdoors in zone 7a but may persist for some years until temps go low enought to kill it. they like moisture and shade but will take sun if the soil is not allowed to become dry for extended periods. plant the top of the tuber at or just below soil level. i am growing a cultivar with smaller blackish foliage in a large plastic planter. i did not knock out the pre-punched drainage hole in the bottom so i can keep the soil saturated and they seem happy there in a half-day of sun. in your zone, container-grown plants would need to be overwintered in a protected area or dig the tubers and hold them over the winter in a cool, dry area....See MoreWinter-hardy elephant ears
Comments (8)I'm in zone 6 Pa and mine is in its third summer. It is planted in a very dry area in full sun. Gets watered about once a week, if I remember, and has multiplied to around 15 plants. It sends out runners that form tubers at the ends that root. I have cut off three in the past week and potted them up with the tip just showing at the top of the soil. I want to see how quickly they root and start leafing out. Great plant, not near as large as regular elephant ears, but it's nice not to have to worry about bringing it in for the winter. Oh, by the way, it is planted next to my basjoo clump which is about 15 years old!...See Morenannerbelle
