Prayers needed !! My sister has breast cancer.

I did not expect to start such a post but you never know what life has in store for you...

A week ago I found out that my sister has breast cancer. She had a mammogram 2 month ago and the results were negative!!! About 3 weeks ago she found a lump in her breast and turned out to be cancer.

In the same time I had my scare too. We are not twins but a lot of things happened in the same day!!. Same day she went for biopsy I had my mammogram (the appt was made 2 month prior) . Same day she got her results back from biopsy ( positive for cancer) I got a call from radiology that I have to go and take more films and have a breast sonogram (ultrasound) . Same day she had her appointment with the surgeon and oncologist I had my appointment for more films and ultrasound. Mine turned out to be a cyst :-) We both have problems with our left breast!!!! What a coincidence. Even if we wanted to arrange the appointments in the same days would have been probably impossible. She lives on the est coast and I live on the west coast.

It is very hard to coop with the news. It is a very sensitive issue for us. Our father died 10 years ago from a liver cancer who was discovered too late and he died in 7 month. The sad think is that my sister's lump could be seen on the mammogram film but the doctor missed it.

Carmen (my sister) will have her surgery on the 17th. On the 10th I'll fly to Boston to be with her and I'll come back on the 18th at 10 pm. Next day on the 19th I'll have a knee surgery I postpone it from 11/12 just to be with Carmen for a few days. My other sister will stay with her after I leave. I wish I could postpone my surgery for a later day but I couldn't . Besides I want to be well and able to walk in case Carmen needs chemo or radiations. I pray that her cancer is not spread. They will only know after the surgery. I pray that I'll come back home safe and my surgery will go smooth.

Your sister and you will be in my prayers. We have lots of breast cancer in my family too, but I do have some hopeful news for you. My mom is a 7 year breast cancer survivor of two different types of cancer (different in each breast). She is living life out loud right now so it can be conquered! Please encourage her to keep a positive outlook, she did discover the lump early and treatment has a great chance of being successful.

It must be so frustrating that the doctor did not see the lump in the mammogram (do they not understand that prevention is the only reason that we submit to this uncomfortable test?) but it was discovered pretty quickly afterward.

My heart just goes out to you and your sister getting this very upsetting news. Please come here and vent when you need to!

Pat that truly is not a post or news anybody wants to hear. But coming here and asking for support and prayers from your friends IS the right thing to do.

Please know that you are included in special prayers and ALWAYS have a open ear and arms for you and your Sister.

How far apart are you two in age? Amazing about the events happening to both of you at the same time!

So glad you can be there in her time of need. I hope that you have the same support when you have to go through your operation and recovery from loved onces at home!

Try to let us know how things are going so we can continue with prayers as long as needed and not worry to much if we do not hear from you in times other then when with sis and in hospital yourself.

Here is your guardian angel...watching over you both

I, too, tried to have the Dorothy Hamill hair cut. Didn't quite work out with my rather thin, kinky hair. (If only I knew about the flat iron back then!) My MIL was diagnosed with stage 4 BC last year and is doing really good. She doesn't need any more chemo. It's amazing what they can do for it now. However, it's not fun. Just watching what my MIL went through makes me pray I never get it.

My Dad died at age 79 in August of pancreatic cancer. Mayo thought he had a shot at beating it, but it wasn't to be. He did make it a year though-he had surgery to remove his pancreas, spleen, and gall bladder which made him diabetic to boot. It wasn't easy figuring out the shots, counting carbs, plus getting chemo. At least he had time to get all of his affairs in order. Hospice offers free grief counseling for a year for immediate family members. So sorry you lost your sister and your DH.

Trinity, That's a fantastic present for your sister. I'm sure that she will treasure it always. I had breast cancer (I'm fine now, but of course, there's always a little worry about reoccurrence). My all time favorite present was a music box from my sister where part of the proceeds went to fight breast cancer. The music box is in the "Promise of Hope" series, and my particular music box is called "Wings of Courage." If anyone ever wants more details about it, please email me through my page. What makes my gift even more precious that my sister picked this out shortly before she died of ALS. She was paralyzed, but used voice recognition software on the computer to order this. It truly is a testament to her kindness, ingenuity, and bravery. For their birthdays, I also created a DVD of family pictures for my sister and her twin. I used Picasa and it was very easy to use. What software are you planning to use? Also, for music, I used the song "Sisters" by Rosemary Clooney. I'd love to hear how your project turns out. I'll keep your sister in my thoughts and prayers. Having a great sister like you will definitely help her. You are absolutely right Anne. After 20yrs too. That's a remarkable run of such an aggressive cancer but still.... it does suck! As Heather says, she recovered quickly although I think it was day 2 post op that she went shopping! Marjorie sounds equally stoic and probably should be Heather's twin instead of me. I'm just not built with the same stuff as she is. I'd be the one asking for the morphine. I saw Heather go through chemo, surgery and then radiation virtually without complaint. She set the bar very high should I follow in her footsteps. I went with Heather for her pre-op anaesthetic visit. The anaethetist said "Don't worry - it's simple surgery! I wanted to scream at him - Simple..... for who! Compared to what your sister has gone through it may well be but when I worked with oncology children, it was often the simple stuff that seemed to them to be the last straw! They'd tolerate bone marrows/spinal taps but lose it when having blood drawn. If you don't have one - a fanny pack will make it a lot easier to have to hold the JP drains. Much easier than coiling the tubing and pinning it to your clothes. I will be thinking of your sister in the coming days. I totally understand your need not to be an active caregiver without a break. Please don't feel selfish. A worn-out caregiver whether it be physically or emotionally is just not an effective one. You are very wise to realize that ahead of time.

Dearest Pat, you and your sister will be in our prayers and hearts. Cancer can be beat. My mom survived cervical cancer. It was tuff but she made it. Stay positive and dont loose hope.

I am so so sorry Pat to hear that you sister has breast cancer. My mother just went thru it she was on kemo and radiation and had a mastectomy. She was tired all the time but she did keep her hair. My grandmother and one of my aunts also went thru it, so I have over a 50% chance of having it myself it is terrifying.

I am glad your mom got over it Kim.
I am not religious but I do believe in a higher power and I am sending all my good thoughts and feelings to you and your family Pat You have all my best wishes for a seedy recovery for your sister!

Pat to post something good or even great...I want to add that my mom had breast cancer also. Almost 20 years ago.

She is a fighter and will NEVER give in to all the pains that she is living with.

Tell Carmen to FIGHT, fight fight and be the WINNER!!!

I wrote this message yesterday and I forgot to press send it!! I think is understandable with all this things going on around me and the shooting at Ft. Hood.
As I write this I turned on the TV on CNN and they are talking about a shooting at an office in Orlando !! 8 people shot and the shooter is on the loose. When all this madness will stop?

Thanks everyone for encouragement. I really need it.
I am so stressed out about my sister situation, my surgery and when I came home tonight I heard about Ft Hood shooting, Lucy's scare and all those poor soldiers who's life was cut short. I do not want any more stress and worries for a while !!!

Lucy, my sister is 6 years younger than me and she is the youngest of the 4 of us (3 sisters and one brother).

I'll let you know how things are progressing.
