This is the lesser-known Majors Creek stand, very fascinating plant community on a standstone ridge. The plants were releasing pollen and the male cones were a bright orange/yellow. Unfortunately there is a housing development less than half a mile away. Captions beneath photos provide explanations...

Apparently the native chinkapin has had its genus changed to Chrysolepis, and is no longer Castanopsis. I was not able to change the caption yet.
