I shouldn't have waited .......

I must do this every year. I wait until the very last minute and them have the mad rush to move all my plants. I wasn't expecting a freeze warning but we got one for tonight : ( DH, DS, a few of his friends and I spent 4 hours this afternoon moving plants. I got about 2/3 of the potted plants put away but haven't touched any of the stuff inground. I'm going to drape burlap over some passifloras and cross my fingers and hope the brugs don't get too badly damaged exposed to the elements. I concentrated on moving the brugs that have seed pods that I want to ripen but there's nothing I can do about many of the passion fruit. It's either cut the vines back and sacrifice the fruit or cover and pray. I chose the latter and hope it was the right decision. I HATE THE COLD!!!!!!!!!

Praying is always Good! I know how you feel Karyn- we're supposed to get a heavy rain and cold temps tomorrow followed by frost the next day! Bad news for Brugs!

It happens every year Girls. Imagine if you were a cash crop farmer and your lively hood depended on your weather decision. Hope everything goes in your favor.

Refers to antibacterial soaps and chemicals that supposedly sanitize our hands but in reality kill the good along with the bad, thus leaving us naked without our little familiars or personal good bacteria working for us to combat the bad bacteria. While I appreciate the "Madison Avenue" issues, I'm not quite ready to return to the days when infant/child mortality due to amoebic dysentery, cholera, rheumatic fever, measles, and so on and so on was more than TWENTY TIMES what it is today. In Pennsylvania in 1912, the infant mortality rate (deaths per thousand) was 150. In 2012 it was 8. Both figures - 1912 and 2012 - include ALL deaths, not just those bacteria-borne ones. Nonetheless, "the good ol' days" weren't, and for the most part, are a fantasy no less "fabricated" by a DIFFERENT "Madison Avenue" than the fabrications of the chemo/pharmo shills. Sadly, in a world with such extraordinary access to information, it is harder to find THE TRUTH than it may ever have been in the history of human kind. We must all SEEK, and FIND, our own way in this world full of charlatans and snake-oil salesmen. Precisely why I do not share the infatuation with "all things worm", that some do. The TRUTH I find has been something less than "magic". And while I profoundly appreciate fermented food and drink - with all it's "good" little microbes - I have no illusion that the "good" ones will "win out" over the "bad" ones. They haven't throughout history, I don't know why they should now. What "wins" is a strong immune system, and when that fails, "you" die, regardless of whether you use "anti-microbial" soap or not. When we purchased the current house in 1996, it had the original GE builders grade dishwasher from 1985. It was very loud and didn't clean well, so we never used it. When the kitchen was remodeled in '06 we went with a new GE Profile dishwasher, as we also were buying a GE washer & dryer. That dishwasher only lasted us a year and was repaired several times (rolling racks and noisy water intake valve), but it cleaned fine. We replaced it with an Electrolux Wave-Touch, but only had it 60 days due to installation issues that could not be resolved, through it cleaned better than the GE. We were then without a dishwasher for about 2 years before we got a Miele Diamante Plus in 2009. In the two years that we've had the Miele, it has cleaned everything well. We don't pre-wash, but do rinse some dishes, pots/pans in the sink so piece of food would go in the garbage disposal, but we don't wash them with soap. On occasion, we will soak and hand-wash an item that may have heavy baked-on food, but that's like once or twice a week. Regardless, on the Miele we use the Normal mode or the Pots & Pans mode and everything comes out clean. Only use the China/Chrystal mode two or three times a year. The Express mode we don't use, since it only washes for 5 minutes and then does two 5 minute rinses (we found this 5 minute wash is not long enough to clean a full load). I check the bottom filter once a week and clean it out, but it hardly ever has anything in it.

Well, yes, you can rake up every bit of grass. When the leaf rake gets to the point that it's just moving a few strands around, you can either stop or get out the leaf blower. But you still have puh-LENTY of grass to rake up. What kind of grass was that? And what are you planting now? Late for seeding? It hasn't hardly been below 86 yet here in southern NC Don't make this sound like it was his fault for making an assumption. You never mentioned where you lived. For this time of year it would be easy to assume you were seeding north of the transition zone.

Brrrrrr!!!!!!!! It's cold this morning. It doesn't appear that anything left outside has been damaged but it's supposed to be even colder tonight with a possibility of light snow. We'll see how they hold up to that. I'm going to try and at least cut the plants back but I don't have the time to do anything else until Sunday.

I just got done digging all my Brugs up, I didn't bother to count them, just dug them up, put them with their root ball in heavy contractor bags, we're suppose to have a heavy frost Sunday night, next year I will sank the pots instead of planting them in the ground, that's to much like work, I hope all yours makes it

We survived a heavy Frost last night.. No wilted spinach leaves on the Brugs.. I guess it is really time to start digging!!! yuk!!!

I give up. It's snowing, a lot! I ran out and took cuttings from some of the inground brugs. Nothing's labeled so I have no idea what is what. I'm going to lose a boatload of passifloras which really has me upset. This just might be the last straw for me. I might be sticking to small tropical, like succulents from now on. Temps should still be in the 60's during the daytime here, not snowing!!!!! At least I'm not in Western MD where they are expecting at least 10 inches. The ski resorts aren't even up and running yet!
