Once-blooming OGRs paired with clematis viticella - Timing?
Comments (5)Thanks for the responses. I will look for that book. I think the clematis that bloom with the roses are the Large-flowered ones? They look just too big and artificial for my taste. I tried a few but they wilted and died. I did not know then that other types of clematis existed. I do want my clematis to bloom after the roses. While I love my big once-blooming roses, they take up a lot of space in my smallish yard. So I thought of using them as trellises. I have chosen some clematis that I hope will not be too rampant, but the roses I'm using them on are pretty large - Mme. Plantier, City of York, The Bishop, Paulii, etc....See MoreKnockout Roses only bloomed once
Comments (13)Probably fall is not the time to apply granules. I am not an expert on this, but I believe the recommendation is to apply granules at bud-break in spring. The midge pupa overwinter in the soil in cocoons. Only a small percentage survive winter and emerge as winged adults, which fly up to lay eggs on the new shoots. These hatch into tiny maggots which do the damage. There are several generations per season, each larger than the previous. After feeding for a couple of weeks, the maggots drop off to pupate in the soil, at which time they are vulnerable to insecticide in the soil. You can also spray the top growth to catch the active larvae. Recommended chemicals are imidacloprid for the soil and cyfluthrin for the spray. These names appear in the fine-print active ingredients, regardless of brand names. "Merit" is a brand name for imidacloprid....See MoreIt's Sweet Autumn Clematis Season Again!
Comments (66)I have been searching the web trying to identify a wild clematis in my yard and came across this thread. A thread that has been going for eight years. Tonight I have learned that there are several similar species and some are known by several names. Clematis terniflora has at least two synonyms:Clematis maximowicziana and Clematis paniculata. And at least three common names: Sweet Autumn Clematis, Sweet Autumn Virgin's Bower, Japanese Clematis. It is a native of Japan and in some areas is an invasive weed. In other areas it is loved like most on this thread love it. There several similar species called Sweet Autumn and virgin's bower. But, vary in number of leaflets water and light requirements. Some have no odor, some have complete flowers and some male and female flowers are on different plants. In western US the native Clematis ligusticifolia is very similar. Same rambunctious growth habit and similar scent. There are at least three cultivors of this species. One of them is naturalized here in Missouri. I am now searching to determine which I have....See MoreClematis is not blooming in season it should - why?
Comments (4)Can you post photos? Sometimes varieties get mixed up. I wonder if your Pink Fantasy is actually Piilu. As far as your other two Henrii may be blooming later because all the old wood is killed back in winter, which often happens here, so it has to grow new stems and flower buds, delaying the bloom. Your Romantika sounds similar to mine as far as bloom season. Push comes to shove, plants grow and flower on their own schedules, and web info tends to be general. Our longer northern days may speed up bloom times and our cold winters may delay bloom times, and sun vs shade exposure makes a difference also. So you just need to observe plants in your area and your garden to know when they bloom....See Morebuyorsell888
