Sickly looking aloe vera

I received this aloe vera stem in the mail a week ago (from FL) and planted it in potting soil in a plastic bin outside on the SE side of the house where it gets sun most of the day. The low temps have been around 60 with high humidity. It hasn't been looking great lately, so I've been reading up on it. Mostly I found that regular potting soil is a no-no, and I guess so is plastic without drainage holes.

I took it out of its pot and took a picture. I'll leave it out for a few hours and hope to get a reply soon, but I plan on putting it in a different pot with cactus soil mixed with perlite. Should I put it back outside or leave it inside? And how should I position the root in the pot? Should the stem stand up straight or be more horizontal?

Thanks for all you help!
