clematis garden tour - way too many photos

There was a tour yesterday of seven local gardens, all belonging to members of the Friends of the Rogerson Clematis Collection. My friends and I made it to six of them. Unfortunately, nothing was labeled, but the gardens were beautiful and I thought you all might appreciate seeing the pictures I took.

Consider yourself forewarned: I took almost 200 pictures. Sorry! Not all of them are of the clems - I got a little distracted by garden art, friends, and cute cats at some points. And sometimes the support structures were cool enough that I snapped a pic in case anyone here needed some inspiration, despite the fact that the clem wasn't blooming yet.

CLEMATIS GARDEN TOUR

Incidentally, the one I found most fascinating was this ridiculously dark purple, almost black one. Does anyone know what it is?

Another couple of thoughts:

One of the homeowners had taken broken pieces of stained glass and scattered it in some of her pots. I thought it was gorgeous and might start doing it myself.

Linda Beutler's garden was by far my favorite. Not only that, but she was just a delight to meet. I really enjoyed speaking with her. Two things that I loved at her house: first, she was growing Blue Light, which is my current obsession. Secondly, she had a sedum growing in one of her pots. By sheer coincidence I'm doing the same thing with the same sedum with one of my Palette. Hers was much further along than mine, though! I loved how the base of the clem looked with that gorgeous full growth all around it.

Violetta, great shots. Now we just need some identifications of who is who in your people shots! I have seen on various gardening shows the use of polished glass as mulch in various gardens. Not quite sure I would go that far though but its use in the pots was interesting. Nice to see the kitties in the shots too (dedicated cat lover here)! Also liked the face on the tree. Have seen kits where you could buy the face parts but never seen the hands offered before! Great job with the pictures.

Hope someone can help with the ID of the dark purple one. I know I have seen pictures of ones in the past that looked like that but can't remember the names. Sometimes the pictures change the coloration and it is always better to see them in real life!

WOW!!...I truly enjoyed that..I did the slideshow from your site and saw then all!!..Thanks for taking the time to share them with us as well..yall musta had a ball that day...I loved the fountain with the bird in it!!..Jeanne

Yes, Katamari is the rolling stuff up game. Its really addictive for such a simple game, and theres three of them. The part I like the most is the amazing effort they put into the music. I found some of it on youtube and it ranges from techno to jazzy lounge music, swing music, Im pretty sure someone even snuck a gospel peice or two in there. While Iw as writing yesterday I stumbled across someone who had done an orchestral version of one of the themse that made my jaw drop. Video game music is constantly impressing me with every passing year. But anyway, back to gardening... Part of my problem with the space issue is theres a movement out here for the "Grow Biointensive" system. While I'm interested that they've managed to do so much with such small topsoil space, I've noticed all the beds dealing with the system need at least two feet of soil, dug down or in raised beds, and thats not what I have. My mum has been trying to push me in that direction, but I dont feel confident with it at this time since I wanted to get more of a feel for the general gardening situation since its my first time and all. Some plants still got pushed closer together than I would've liked but then none of us had seen some of these plants actually growing before. The cukes are doign better than I expected for being about 6 inches closer to each toher plant than I really wanted them to be, but we had such a huge amount of plants to deal with that I did the best I could. I think the funniest part about all this is while it is my first time growing a real garden, I've been growing virtual gardens since I was abotu 19, playing an online game called "Final Fantasy 11", which had a really complicated planting/gardening system most people didnt know about. That game system is actually what got me really focused on the seasons, when to plant, where to plant, when to fertilize, what plants grew better in what geological areas, and I even had a little notebook for a long time where I'd record the weekly cycle of my virtual plants in relation to the moon phase and exact time I made any modifications to the planting space. Even the gamers thought I was nuts, but I loved it! They'd even die off or give terrible results if I neglected them for too long, or give off better results if I got proper gardening tools, workbenches, and diffrent planters had diffrent effects too. Im getting better results with a real garden than I was in my virtual gardens though... Except for that one time I accidentally harvested 122 virtual onions. I can tell you, the cooks sure were happy with me.

I am so envious! Beautiful yard, beautiful house and beautiful dogs. Lovely beyond words. I tell you what. All of you with your picture perfect gardens puts mine to shame. I am not posting anymore pictures of my simple gardens! I had a Dalmatian/Great Dane named Benny. I told people he was a "Damnation". He scared everyone who came to our house, especially the meter readers. He was beautiful and so playful, like a Dane, but had the not-so-friendly-strangers-personality like Dalmatians. A great guard dog for me. Poor Benny died of kidney failure at age 5. I believe it was the result of being bit by a gigantic copperhead. He developed complications afterward and the kidneys failed. He loved to go for rides in the truck, sitting up tall in the cab and looking out. He HAD to go for a ride every day. What a character. I took him for his final ride, having to lift him up into the cab and by the time we got home, he could not walk. He was miserable and suffering. The next day, I took him to the vet. My poor Benny. I love your Great Dane. He has just a beautiful coat coloration. I love how they are big, playful pups. A great breed of dog. Thanks for sharing all. ~Annie

Several times I have looked at your glorious garden, and I still can't pick my favorites. Picking favorites is human nature, of course. But I do have memories of certain of your abundant blooms and their combinations that have really penetrated my old brain fog. I remember Peggy Martin on the fence, Iceberg on the arches, and Climbing Pinkie on the umbrella trellis. So, in those cases, the structures are an important part of both displaying the roses and preserving my memories. But in other cases, it was the combination of roses that was outstanding, like Falstaff and Iceberg, or the wall of "desserts". And how the special roses worked together was what made them so memorable. Sometimes the outstanding singular nature of a rose came through strongly to me like the huge size of the Yves Piaget blooms. or the blazing color of Chrysler Imperial, not to mention the age of the grafted CIs. Such an enduring rose that one is. So putting all these together, plus the roses' wonderful companions, has made many special lasting rose memories for me. Thanks for the memories, Cori Ann. Diane

Violetta, your pictures are absolutely beautiful. I love the deep purple clematis. Is it possibly Romantika? I remember seeing it recently and did a search after I read this post.

I love the use of the stained glass in the pots. I watched a gardening show last weekend where they used tumbled blue glass to mulch a large border. I like it in the pots much better.

Thanks for taking all the great pictures. I really enjoyed them. I loved that bird in the bird bath also. The clematis photo's were very nice. I see their season is just getting started also. That cold spring really delayed a lot of blooms. Karen

Glad everyone's liking them! I felt kind of silly snapping so many pictures throughout the day, but I couldn't resist. :0P

Thank you very much for taking so many pictures and posting them. As I'm sure you read, I had vertigo so badly that I could not even ride in a car that day.

I have Linda's book and I wanted to go to her house the most of all.

I wrote the above without looking at them yet.

I would have taken just as many pictures. I've taken just as many at public gardens. I took ten rolls at Butchart Gardens in Victoria BC.

I'm glad many were blooming. I only have about five of fifty blooming here so was afraid many would not be blooming for the tour.

What a beautiful garden tour, I think I can even smell them. You take great pics, too.

I think that big purple clematis is a Etoile Violet & the pink double that you took about three pics of, ah, I know that one well. I think the centers change from a purple to white or vice versa.

I've got one in bloom, with 30+ buds opening, thats Josephine Evijohill clematis (the pink double).
