And here's my garden so far...

It's our Tomato Containment Center. Hubby got a little fanciful when I asked him to build something that would hold up the 'mater plants as they grow. It's supposed to look like a greenhouse without the glass. The obelisks at either end are supposed to be for pole beans.

How clever. It's adorable.
The oblelisks are wonderful on the end, sort of adds archtectural interest.

Speaking of butterflies, I am trying to plant flowers to attract them and bumblebees... And hummingbirds. A garden without them is a garden still asleep. :-)

Boy time really got away with me. I'm been so busy with work and I just interviewed for a Masters Program at UT Southwest Medical here in Dallas, whew I'm exhausted! :) Here are the rest of my Brugs! :) I took these after work one day so they are a little darker than normal. Good idea, Eloise, about the markers. I had no idea that wasn't toxic to the plants. Thanks pkponder! Coleus was really easy to start from seed. I started a thread in the Container Garden forum, if you wanna check out the coleus progress! :) It'd be interesting to try different types of ferts but right now I'll stick with what I have on hand. I don't have access to any other fert than store bought ones... Yaslan, this is my first time growing from seed. I got a Wizard mix, which is a bunch of different types of coleus and I used pretty much the whole package and got lots of seedlings! Ashley

Everything is from seed. About 50 variety of peppers. 300 plants. Then onion and sunflower. Squash, zucchini, cantaloupe, watermelon, corn ,cucumber, okra , beans, sweet potato, and tomato. Hopefully I'll be off work Saturday and can actually finish everything. Yes I probably will be selling. That's going to be a lot of vegetables lol.

"I think there's a real need for someone who can marry an architect's vision for asthetics with a builder's ability to do things affordably" It's called an interior designer with a degree, not the ones who claim to be interior designers who are decorators with a continuing education or trade school, or OJT on where to place a vase. do you really think so? in my experience an interior designer doesn't know much about construction or building economically? i think the other piece missing is incorporating green building - to the extent that you can save money beyond your initial cost outlay especially - and someone who can answer the question as to whether it makes more economic sense to move or add on. Have you ever actually met an interior designer or just someone who told you they were an interior designer? They are required to have many hours in the building construction sciences and budgeting. I don't know where these interior designers you met with 5-year college degrees were that knew nothing, but that is what their business is. I think like most people, you are thinking about an interior decorator, total different kettle of fish.

I hear ya! The best plant I have found for all of the above is a milkweed plant.
This spring they had tropical milkweed (suppose to be hardy, we will see) at the nursery and picked up a couple.
They are a beautiful red and yellow.
THey get real tall, but boy the butterflies love them.
I know the orange milkweed comes back every year.
Anywho, you don't have to water them all that much, and very little care, they haven't stopped bloomin since I planted them.
I haven't seen them in the big box stores, but they have them in privately owned nurseries in case you are interested.

Hypericum densiflorum, bushy St. John's wort, is very popular with bees. Hummingbirds also love the native honeysuckle, Lonicera sempervirens. Mine blooms from Jan/Feb to frost (sometimes more than others as it takes a moment to catch its breath).

I would love to plant some of the red honeysuckle Lonicera sempervirens.. I have my eye on a Major Wheeler as soon as I can figure out where to put it. Part of my problem is landscaping logistics... I keep wanting to plant all the hummingbird flowers around the patio so I can see the hummers from inside the house, but then the husband wont be able to get the lawnmower through...

butterfly4u, do you remember what nursery you got the tropical milkweed from?

The nursery that is down the street from me in Aiken, it's called Cold Creek Nursery.
You must have a privatly owned nursery near you, just pay them a visit, sometimes they will order one for you if you want. That is what is nice going to a privately owned place vs. a big box place.
The orange is very common, but the red and yellow, now that is a real show stopper, and hummers are really attracted to it.
Mine was seeding and I let the seeds scatter, I am sorry, I whould have collected some and I could send you some seed.
I sure hope it comes back next year, I'm going to muclh it real good, you never know.
But if it doesn't, you know I'll be buying more next spring.
And collecting the seeds this time....darn.
