Shiranui/Sumo/Dekopon seedlings
Comments (30)As the season fizzled out, the last dekepons were smaller, not as juicy, as not as sweet. They did, however, deliver quite a few seeds. I have some seedlings just now coming up and if they survive I should have a few small starters in Nor Cal. A couple of things about this variety. It is reported to be a very finicky grower. So much so, that the Japanese originally gave up on commercial production until some lone farmer stole a tree or some budwood (?) and figured out how to properly grow them. I think it has a lot to do with thinning, but don't know for sure. There might be water/fertilizer/other issues. Having had the fruit in Japan (including just recently) I can say the the best examples of California Sumo have tasted *better* than even the 'gift class' of Dekopon I'd had in Japan. Perhaps I didn't get it at the right times or from the right purveyor, but I think the CA growers are doing a fine job. I have a few more seeds that may or may not germinate after being accidentally forgetten in some water (oops) - I am guessing they're toast. Still, with luck, I should have 3-5 seedlings if they survive any damping off. Being easy to peel, sweet, juicy, BIG, and tasting like life savers tangerine candies did the trick for me. I hope they aren't *too* difficult to grow. We'll all know in a few years :)...See Moreis this realy not a sweetlee tangerine or not
Comments (4)Mandarin seedlings can, indeed, have some pretty wicked thorns. In fact, I have a Shasta Gold grafted mandarin that had some pretty crazy thorns. Steve, what you can do is contact the grower who has coined this term "Sweetlee" and find out what the actual cultivar is. Sort like the "Sumo" mandarins are really Dekopon/Shiranui, or the "Cutie" mandarins are actually 3 different mandarin cultivars, depending on what time of year it is :-) You and I had this conversation a while back, and I think I explained to you there is no "Sweetlee" cultivar, and most likely this was a marketing term, not uncommon for growers to make their retail product more attractive to the consumer. Here is a link I found, see if they will be up front with you and tell you what orange seedling you may actually have: http://www.orangering.com/fruit-Sweet-Lee-Oranges-60.cfm Now, there is always the chance you have a zygote seedling, which would be a hybrid of this orange and whatever the pollen parent was. Or not. Since commercial orchards are usually grown in large blocks of like trees, chances are on your side that even if it is zygotic, its pollen parent is the same cultivar. Let us know what you're able to find out. Patty S....See MoreCitrus....I'm back! New Calamondin trees
Comments (39)Mikey buddy a big get well hug and to your parents . Your not supposed to get sick during the hottest part of the yr your supposed to leave that for the winter . I heard summer colds and flu's are very hard to shake they just go on and on . Take care my friend. Laura I soooooo would love to see you with a Greenhouse in your backyard . It would make your winter care of your tree's soooooo much easier . You have put so much time and energy into your tree's and it so shows your tree's our outstanding I have been learning from you but I still cannot chop my tree lol. With a Greenhouse your fruit especially your mandarins and you have a ton of them will ripen to perfection in a house not likely and if they did they wouldn't taste as good as grown in a GH . Your tree's would be fighting for light during the winter months if inside the house because they all can't be in front of the window there would have to be some further back and every foot further back from the window makes a huge difference . If you were only growing lemons and limes you would be fine with them in your home but with as many special varieties as you have I don't think they would ever reach peak ripeness and flavor . Laura I cannot believe the fruit I get off my tree's in the winter and the quality and flavor incredible I would love for you to experience the same thing. Have a great night . Comments (144)Jinny I don't really know how Seville's grow over time but they get to a very quick jump start. I am growing mine in windows with out additional light and they are beating the pants off my kumquat seedlings with them under 16 hours of very bright lights. I plan to graft an NZL to my Seville sour orange and grow it outside against the south wall of my house 8 feet east of my NZL on C35. NZL on US897 Volunteer Pumpkin and lambsquarters share the bucket with the NZL that nearly died. The lambsquarters will be remove to another pot and the pumpkin will remain to serve as a dryness indicator. The cause of decline was cause by the container. I failed to notice that while the bucket had great side aeration hole it did not have any bottom holes. This year I decided to water heavily every week and use the vacuum chamber under the pot to draw excess water out and keep the moist soil aerated. With out the bottom holes the roots did not get the air and they rotted while all my other tree did great. Steve...See Moreollemar
