'Sweetlee' is likely a 'made up' name by marketers. Seeds may not even come true from seed. So you may even have a hybrid mix. Or it may be just an orange? Maybe some kind of mandarin/orange hybrid?

I seem to recall seeing lots of long thorns. Typical mandarins don't have such long thorns I don't think.

Steve the first i have heard of "Sweetlee" was your posts. Google search brings up one site that sold fruit named similar but no actual trees that I can find.

Getting an ID of a citrus tree by use of a leaf only is virtually impossible by sight. Maybe some scientist can pull some gene info in a lab.

If you are sure it was a tangerine I think it would be better for you to just call it a Tangerine seedling.

However its your seedling and you can call it whatever you want.

Mandarin seedlings can, indeed, have some pretty wicked thorns. In fact, I have a Shasta Gold grafted mandarin that had some pretty crazy thorns. Steve, what you can do is contact the grower who has coined this term "Sweetlee" and find out what the actual cultivar is. Sort like the "Sumo" mandarins are really Dekopon/Shiranui, or the "Cutie" mandarins are actually 3 different mandarin cultivars, depending on what time of year it is :-) You and I had this conversation a while back, and I think I explained to you there is no "Sweetlee" cultivar, and most likely this was a marketing term, not uncommon for growers to make their retail product more attractive to the consumer. Here is a link I found, see if they will be up front with you and tell you what orange seedling you may actually have:

Now, there is always the chance you have a zygote seedling, which would be a hybrid of this orange and whatever the pollen parent was. Or not. Since commercial orchards are usually grown in large blocks of like trees, chances are on your side that even if it is zygotic, its pollen parent is the same cultivar. Let us know what you're able to find out.
