Comments (51)well i was trying to figure out what wrong with a tree and while i was just standing there i saw large root on top of the ground. i started to dig around it and found out it wasn't from my citrus tree. Instead it came from a peach tree that is planted about 15 feet away from it. The peach tree root was about 2 inches in diameter and it went around citrus tree roots several times and looked like over the years just been suffocating it. i pulled out wheelbarrow full of roots. Dekopon is already starting to show recovery signs. Never thought something like this could happen....See MoreDekapon/Sumo
Comments (16)Yes and yes, Mike. Keep the strongest one, that will be the clone seedling. You can keep the others, just know they could be hybrids. But, since Dekopon are grown in large blocks, your multiple seedlings actually have a good chance of being either all clones, or a hybrid of a Dekopon and a Dekopon. So, I would keep them all, just label them accordingly. And yes, it is Harris Nursery in FL that are propagating the Shiranui (same thing as Dekopon), and I believe they have been able to get inspected and approved for shipping out of state (to non-citrus states). So, mandarin, if you want to contact Harris Nursery in Florida, they can ship to you if you're not in a quarantined citrus state. And fairfield, if Four Winds can ship to you, not sure what the concern is?? I'm not following you. Is it Harris Nursery that cannot ship to you? And that they can ship to AL or MS, and someone could simply drive across the state line? People do nefarious things all the time, so this is not really surprising. Just human nature at it's not finest :-( Patty S....See MoreSumo seedling - next move?
Comments (10)Citrus roots tend to not tangle so you will be safe keeping them there until about 6 inch tall. Also with more trees in the same pot, the trees will use the water faster. This may prevent root rot. What I have found to be the biggest problem is stem rot so water from underneath and in the morning so the day light can hold any soil surface fungus in check. I loose 9 out of 10 plants to damp-off (stem rot) I have used root-tone on the stem with great success. I also plant the tree permanently with about a quarter of an inch of root showing The root is a lot more resistant to damp-off. Watch out for sunburn when you first expose the root. Expose it slowly. You can put them out now on the north side of your house and slowly allow them to get sunlight in the morning and evening. This will produce a plant at 10-14 leaves per 6 inch in height. I put the plants on the south side with a piece of glass blocking direct sunlight 3 hour ether side of solar noon. AS my plants grew bigger I had water melon vines shading the trunk so only the leaves got sun Best of luck. You got the heat of summer with you coming. Comments (0)The history on the Dekopon is that after the cross was made, initial trials reported poor results and the industry shelved it. One grower, though, 'liberated' some budwood and went about trying to make it work. Over years, he figured out how to prune, when to pick, how to store, etc., and turned it into a winner. The rest is history (in Japan at least). I ran across this article where some folks took a tour at a grower and the grower seemed generous with cultivation info. I've posted the link below. Here is a link that might be useful: Sumo growers' tips...See Morekylem4711
