Been Waiting & Waiting

I ordered 6 clematis from bloomingbulbs on March 1st and I been waiting and waiting on them and yesterday being April 5th I go home and my next door neighbor comes over with 2 packages saying he thought he had better bring these over since they started growning out of the BOXXXXXXXX. He said the UPS driver had delivered them a couple weeks ago and he had been aiming to bring them over but just didn't have the time..omg...I said THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH and took the packages just knowing they where probably my clematis. I opened the packages and my poor little clematis had started growing, but the part that was inside the box was a cream color due to lack of light and one even had a shape of a bloom on it but that to was a cream color. The only part that was green was the vine that had found its way out of the package. The dirt in the plastic bag was moist which I'm thankful for. I went right out and potted these babies up in a mix of compost and peatmoss, with a little cowpoo and watered them in good. I talked to them as I potted them up and told them i was so very very sorry and that I would make it up to them if they found it in their hearts to pull through their rough start. Its quite warm here today being close to 60 and I left them out side on the north side of the house in total shade. Is there anything eles I need to do for them? Do ya'll think they have a chance for a life? I guess time will tell. Sandy

Well, I don't know which type clematis you ordered, but if it was me, and the plants are stressed, I'd probably prune them back now in the pots. Of course in my zone, we can do that and still get vigorous regrowth because of our long growing season. I'm not sure about your zone. I'd also start exposing them to more light in the next few days, not all day in the sun, but bring them out of the shade for a couple of hours of sunlight, increasing over the next week or so. They need sunlight, and as long as your pots are mulched to keep the roots cool, they will probably be okay.

I've never had this happen to my baptisia before, but it has happened to my peonies. On peonies, it's called botrytis, a disease that peonies are especially prone to. Buds form, and then turn black and fall off before they open - just like you described. I don't know if Baptisia gets this or not. In the best book I know of for perennials, called "The Well Tended Perennial Garden", by Tracy DiSabato-Aust, botrytis is mentioned for peonies, but not for Baptisia. You might want to do some internet research. If it is Botrytis, it's easy to treat - just cut the plant back in the fall, and keep the area around it clear of foliage and cuttings. When you mulch, don't let it nestle up against the plant itself. You could also treat it with something, but I wouldn't recommend that until you find out for sure what it is. Not having it bloom this year must have been heartbreaking. It's a magnificent plant in bloom - one of my favorites in the garden - and it's usually pretty easy to grow - just plant in full sun and leave it alone. I hope you find out what it is. Good Luck!

I have learned to just kind of equate Vintage with waiting . . . and waiting . . . and waiting. I've been waiting years (literally) for some 'custom-rooted' varieties. Every so often, I conclude that I've somehow fallen off the waiting list for a certain variety & re-submit a request -- only to immediately receive a prompt stating that I'm already on the list. So, I just keep waiting . . . As for the portions of the '08 list you're waiting for: Vintage probably needs the additional time to determine propagation success rates. From my perspective, another 6 months isn't such a long wait.

How long can roof paper be exposed?

Felt paper has a pretty limited life span, and is not really “waterproof”. It’s use as a roofing underlay should be only if it is kept dry. When it gets wet, it wrinkles. Even 30 pound. A synthetic underlay can stand up to the UV exposure for 6 months or so. “A couple of years” is well past any expiration date. I’m surprised that you haven’t had leaks from this. This should have been addressed as a repair immediately. I wouldn’t be waiting on any lie in the sky solar shingles of any kind to tackle this. If you want solar, replace the tile with architectural asphalt shingles and then do conventional solar panels over them. The versatility for future improvements, and the easier replaceability built into that option, as well as the lower cost, will be the better long term value. The replaceability especially is what makes that the much better option to a glass roof.

How COULD he do that to them! What a jerk!!!! I also think that UPS should be notified. They should notify YOU of a delivery with a card in your mailbox and what they have done.

In the end, I do think they will survive! Best wishes!
