It looks like they just took plants out of their original pots and plop them on top of peat that didn't have even perlite added. The rocks, I assume, were from the top dressing. And I am glad that you can see for yourself how wet it was inside the containers. Shake off - tease off (helping yourself with a chopstick) all the soil from the roots. You can have plants sitting on some newspaper/paper towels for a while. It will help to suck-up extra moisture, and they will nor die. If you get bag of perlite and maybe some grit (grains should be approx. size of aquarium gravel), or pumice, or scoria - you can make great mix yourself. If only perlite available, sift it using kitchen sieve and use only what remains in it; mix 50/50 or 60/40% perlite/soil. Grit is very good for drainage, if you can get it I would use 40% of each grit & grit and rest of soil. And they needs to be in planter with drainage. If you really want to use decorative containers, you need to take plants out as I mentioned before, for watering and draining. I would keep saucer underneath and keep checking if any water accumulates - if so, empty it. Otherwise just return them :) Use containers with drainage and a saucer. The rootless plant may grow roots. Just set it on top of the mix and in a while - if healthy - it will start growing roots. Here are some Haworthias in similar container as yours except it is thinner and I have drilled drainage holes into it. Plants have been potted into it almost 4yrs ago:Grit on top is bigger than grit in the mix (you can use the pebbles you already have). Mix in this container is made of grit, perlite and turface and very little bark.

Yeah those new leaves look like they're not getting enough nitrogen. I would go very light on the nitrogen though since it's only been in the ground for a few months, but especially since we're coming up to cold weather (maybe? it's was still almost 90 in my back yard today). I would give the tree some good protection if we get some nights around 35 degrees or lower. Once spring rolls around, then give it some more fertilizer because the ground is probably lacking.

Laura, here is a picture of one of my clivias that bloomed about a month ago. I have planted it in 511 several years ago and it does well in it and the 511 is so much easier to haul around than most any soils so I plant all my container plants in it now. I can't put my clivias outside without caging them in because the squirrels love to eat them, or bite the leaves and whole top part off the roots. I was able to re-root one of the biten off tops of a variegated leaf one. I was so heart-broken when I saw what happened I tried in desperation and it actually rerooted! I think I was just lucky and don't put them out anymore. Even when they were in cages I would find the squirrels trying to get inside of the cages and they would throw the cages around trying to get them open. They even come under my front porch to get them if I put them there. Brian is correct, they are lower light plants. I have read you should make a dot on the side of the plant so you keep the plant in the same place facing the light to keep the plant's leaved growing in one direction. No matter what, I seem to move them too much so my leaves grow in many directions. They bloom best when they are given a cool, dry rest during the winter. I have an epiphyllum in bloom right now you may like to see. It blooms best when given a cool dry rest like the Clivia so can share a cold spot with the clivia. Your unheated porch sounds ideal. It is now outside, and so far the squirrels have been leaving it alone. The flower is as large as my open hand. It is so beautiful. I have a different kind which should bloom any day now too. I will post a picture when it is fully out. The buds started in January so it is a long wait for blooms. The Clivia is like that too. Cory
