Bambusa oldhamii or B. beecheyana might fit, but has no lower leaves, but you could plant smaller bamboos in between or next to the larger, taller plants. Some of the Guaduas or Dendrocalamus' would also work, although their min temps for leaf damage is around 23 to 25F. Kt

Thanks for all the responses so far! I went by reseda pottery today. You're right, tons of pots and fountains, all working. My wife and I had never seen anything like it that's for sure! Our 8 month old didn't know what to think. Prices for pots weren't that "discount" though so we didn't get what we were looking for. Gardena is too far for just a couple smaller pots, but if I'm ever down that way... I'll check Home goods. Anywhere else?

We had a high of 81 yesterday at1:30. I was out in my garden picking salad for thanksgiving. We have had a steady 30 mile an hour wind from the south for several days blowing the tall bluegrass in the front field to the south. The wind came to an end in the morning and it was still and ominous. I heard it coming up the gorge to my north, moaning loud. The wind hit and the temperature dropped 20 degrees in 15 minutes. We ended up with a low of 33. Almost 50 degree drop in a day. It is now down to 27. They say low 20's or upper teens in the morning but then back up to 60 and 70 the next day. I have been moving plants all day and all yesterday. The Vegetables are covered up. But I think I will let my Brugs die. They didn't bloom for me this year. I am a passive aggressive gardener with to many plants to move.

I"m not familiar with the geography of CA cities and regions, but how far are you physically from the Imperial Valley where King Palms are more pronounced? This could be attributed to nursery availability or local landscape designer/architects. Perhaps you've not noticed, but if you look at local commerical landscapes and pricier new homes, you can readily tell which properties were designed by the same person/firm. Same plants, same accents and features. It also could be that there is a well-known and respected grower of King Palms (they do not transplant well until container grown as their crowns are easily damaged in transport). in the Imperial Valley. That grower pushes them off on people as an alternative to queens or petticoats, etc.
