Shade tolerant evergeen host for clematis?

Karen Mickleson

There's a space next to my front door on the left which is 18" x 43". While the blue planter box to the right gets a few hours of morning sun, this spot gets none, as it faces northeast. I'm mulling a redwood container with a shade tolerant clematis going up the 43" wide left wall from door on some kind of trellis.

Ideally, I'd like to plant it with some kind of evergreen vine or shrub or something! through which the clematis would meander--to have something attractive during winter months while the clematis isn't in bloom. The only thing I've come up with is an espaliered (sp) jasmine.

So. Shade tolerant evergreen host for a clematis? Ideas?

Thanks,

Karen
