Coatrack and Gazing Ball from 2007 complete

Hi, I don't post here too much any more and quit picking junk because unless I really need it, you don't want to know.

Somebody here gave me an idea of what to do with this stuff, mainly the coatrack. But I made myself do this one. Glad I took the photo because I made sure it was plumb when I put it up, but it needs to be straightened just a tad.

I think I got it up last year and started a very small Polish Spirit clematis there, already had a Graham Thomas rose planted there. I gave the rose away because it needed more sun, but the clematis doesn't seem to mind. Have a more shade tolerant rose ready to plant.

I got all those planters planted, too except the little pot. They were really nice last year but not coming along this year, I wanted marigolds and waited until spring to pick the seeds that were left, and they aren't germinating well.

My victorian trellis is on sawhorses in the basement, never got my spiral planter painted, don't have the fancy ironwork border done for the coatrack spot yet, don't have fence sections painted and erected in the back, and on and on. That's how it is with me, run out of steam.

Oh and my daughter knocked over and broke one of those clay pots mowing, I was sick about it, tried J. B. Weld and ended up duct taping it. It is to the back and won't show unless you know it's there.

Wonderful!!! Good job! I am sooo overwhelmed with my 1/2 acre that I'm trying to plant up..all at once..now that I have a deer fence!!! If I could only STOP buying plants from all the neighborhood plant/yard sales!!lol! I'm sick, I tell ya!! I so busy planting and making beds to plant in and watering,,that I don't even have time to make some good junk for my yard!!! Oh well...60 last plants to go!!! THEN I PLAY!!! Wish I could grow a nice clematis like you do, I gotta get the tougher type perenials..to survive me!!lol!

Rob - allright already! I'll follow you. There is nothing so exiting going on in my neck of the woods, but the sun is shining and the oaks are getting green and the grass grown so fast one can see it get tall. I am trying to teach garden manners to Gussie, not doing too well so far, she is still shy enough that she just goes to lay on the deck if she realizes shes been (gently) corrected. No matter, compared to the way she was, she's a happy dog. There is a lot of construction going on in the hills behind me, so many people are building on property they own, but had not developed for years. I think it's the new solar technology that has been a big incentive, as that area is off the grid and solar is much more available and easier to set up and maintain. Street people in town, may street people, mostly young, schlepping back-packs and accompanied by a dog. There was a group in town, sitting inside the large roped off square in the middle of town, one was playing a guitar and they actually had a small camp-fire going, I am sure eventually that fire was discouraged by someone in authority. Generally they are tolerated, as long as they don't panhandle aggressively. I am off to do some more weeding, planting and mulching, another month and all I have to do - I hope - is deadheading and watering and sitting under the grape arbor, sipping iced tea and enjoying the fruits of my labor.

Thanks you guys. I didn't mean to sound like I was willing to concede on not getting paid. Suzy hit the nail on the head, explaining the bottom feeder pecking order of the small contractor. There's steps or a process that we take to up our chances of getting paid other than running to a courthouse. Surely, you all know that once one opens that can of worms, you can add months,costs and the risk of not collecting the full total amount. In addition, knowing your adversary and treating these situations on a case by case differential is to our advantage. Trust me, it's better to play detective, using your understanding of what is really happening, to get what you want rather than to threaten too early. As far as the guy who has empty promises, we are in the 'squeaky wheel gets the grease' step in the process. We're camping out in his front yard, so to speak. Jimmy and I both know how many aces we hold in our hand. We know when someone's ego and reputation is at stake. I am friends with two of his sisters, one of his brothers and his mama adores me. Jimmy knows the same 300 or so people this guy knows,lol. This alone ensures us that he won't stiff us and is more threatening than any call or letter from a lawyer. My Jimmy is very personable and charming. Yesterday, he exposed a few of his serious peacock feathers, so to speak, to this guy while discussing this debt and handing Jimmy some cash that amounts to not even a lousy tip to what he owes us. Although not being openly discussed, all the players know what's at stake here, where we all are on the time line and when push comes to shove. Jimmy and I know when to burn our bridges. I also know when the ball is in Jimmy's court,not mine. It's to my advantage to let these boys be boys, if you know what I mean. ;o) The good news is, that your kind words,prayers and sunflower thoughts made a big change yesterday. Half of what is owed to us came in the mail! But more importantly, another prayer involving money was answered yesterday. Even more needed, this little miracle made Jimmy and I feel a much missed breeze under our wings that really uplifted us. Oh good lord, you're all gonna get a kick out of this. But first let me tell you about what our day was like after I wrote this journal yesterday. Like I said, I knew writing out my feelings would throw me into some level of action so I started with the basics and cleaned the house while Jimmy was working. We both agreed that we would put 2 hours into chores/work and go to the beach. Heat index predictions were 110 degrees. We had no idea that a thrilling roller coaster ride of utter fear and joy would unfold the rest of our day. While I was cutting up watermelon and lopes for our cooler, Jimmy let me know that he put the cash with the checks we got in the mail in one of our dressers but had 2 twenties and some ones on his person. Boy, did we get lucky with parking. The closest spot to the beach on the street we picked. So rare, we had to high five each other. Virtually impossible when you consider it's the busiest week of the season with 300,000 people in one 13 mile long stretch of beach. We claimed our turf on the sardine packed beach and the oppressive heat got us to the surf sooner than usual. The temp of the water was a perfect 71 degrees. Chilly to the toes at first but easy to wade on in without hesitation. And the there was such a nice sandbar with waves strong enough to keep a good eye but spaced well enough to have a blast. Many of the beach goers were taking advantage of the wonderful surf. It was so nice for us to be exchanging those, "Gosh, this is so much fun" smiles between us. Whew, talk about good for the weary soul. My senses seemed to be in overdrive when leaving the water feeling a formidable under toe against my calves. My sinuses only smelling the sea and my taste buds salty, I was thrown back to a place in time feeling as if I was walking out of the water with Lindsey after a swim. Her presence was so strong I could taste and smell it. I'm feeling better by the minute. For the next few hours we snacked, did some word puzzles and swam about every 1/2 hour due to the heat and the fun surf. I couldn't help but overhear a man behind us, with a new york accent, conducting business on his cell phone. Then his son, about 11, his daughter, about 14 and his wife joined him drying off from their swim. The boy was very loud throwing a bona fide fit yelling at his mom and stomping his feet. Jimmy and I dipped our sunglasses down our noses a tad and exchange that "look" while the people in front of us picked up their sand chairs and reversed them facing us instead of the ocean. It got weirder by the nanosecond after that. The boy gets even louder, screaming at his mother for not bringing his chair to the beach while now the people in front of us that are now facing us are also moving their sunglasses exchanging that "look" to us. Seconds later, bad turned to worse as the father started screaming as loud as his son throwing empty threats of leaving the beach, packing up the car and cutting their vacation short. The teenage girl, who remained quiet through her embarrassment get the brunt of her father's scolding, not the boy. Then all eyes on the jammed packed beach grew large when the man announced to his children "I wished I never had kids". I grabbed the arms to my chair to rise up and Jimmy said: "Oh no you don't Diane." I tried to settle back in my chair. About 90 seconds later with more screaming out of all of them except the mother, the father called his daughter a b--ch then yelled to his two kids: "I wish you two were both dead and buried." I jumped out of my chair like a bat outta he11. "Take it off the beach, now," I said. I said some more stuff but because I was seeing red I can't recall exactly. I know I was brief and didn't curse. I sat back in my chair for only a minute telling Jimmy and the now audience on me that I was going in the ocean, "I needed to cool off in more ways than one." To my hopes, Jimmy soon joined me in the water and was met with, "Lindsey made me do it" with a big grin. "Oh, I know, he exclaimed, but she would of been 10 times worse than you!" When we got out of the water this sad excuse for a father and his family were no longer there. Four people approached me and thanked me. Jimmy dubbed me the "hero of the beach" for the remaining hour we were there before we headed home. After some down time, around 6pm we both decide to run up to the produce stand together to get some corn for dinner. Jimmy pulled into the food store because he wanted something and I went to the trunk to get some money out of our beach bag. Earlier on the beach, I noticed Jimmy threw his cell phone, car keys and what certainly looked like a 100 dollar bill to me in the side pocket of the beach bag. With all the excitement and the fact that Jimmy is ADD, I never asked him about this bill. When I went to the trunk, the beach bag wasn't there. I gasped as I realized I left it on the street next to the car when we left the beach. We set land speed record getting back to the beach where we parked. We're both scared as he11 because even though Jimmy said he put the cash in the dresser he knows himself all too well and might of not put it in the dresser. With me trying to convince him that I did in fact see a 100 dollar bill in the beach bag earlier, we both were so scared that Jimmy somehow put all the 500 in our beach bag earlier before we left the house. I'm convinced that is exactly what happened and I apologize to him for making such a mistake. He graciously offered up, "Welcome to my nightmare. We'll never survive if my ADD rubs off on you!" Meanwhile, it's the busiest week of the season and we are in deep dinner rush hour traffic. I keep closing my eyes and Jimmy weaves in and out of traffic. I prayed. Low and behold, we pull into the street we parked at earlier and there it sat on the sidewalk. He pulled up, I opened my door and yanked it into our car,lol. We gasped as we saw what we suspected and thanked God. So, here our beach bag with 500 dollars in it sat on a public street, in a very crowded resort and the only disturbance was tire tracks. There was no argument that we knew darn well that Lindsey protected it for us! Heck, we felt so good the rest of the night, I skipped watering my plants and excepted their "cooked-look" from the day's oppressive heat and only had ONE scoop of ice cream (with dark chocolate kisses and Heath bar pieces.) That snack choice alone should tell you that things are much better now. ~di, going back to the beach today wishing for more excitement but not as scary as yesterday. :o)

I just made the BEST recipe for my book club last week, using chili sauce, for shrimp dip. The book was " Long Journey Home" About a Afrian Boy that found his home land at war at age 12. It is a quick good read. We make recipes around the theme of the book, so I googled African recipes. I found great recipes, but the best was the one I'm going to share with you. The first night I used the sauce as a dip for cold shrimp the next night I made a hot dish sauting the shrimp, aspargus, pineapple and the sauce and severed over rice. It is going to be my new, favorite company dish. 1 pound fresh or frozen jumbo shrimp (16 to 20) 4 stalks celery Red Dip (recipe follows) Pink dip (recipe follows) Red Dip: 2 tablespoons Red Pepper Paste(recipe follows) 1 cup chili sauce Pink Dip: 2 tablespoons Red Pepper Paste (recipe follows) 2/3 cup mayonnaise or salad dressing 1 tablespoon lemon juice Red Pepper Paste: 1/4 cup dry red wine 1 tsp. cayenne pepper 3/4 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. ground ginger 1/8 tsp. cardamom 1/8 tsp. ground coriander 1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg 1/8 tsp. ground cloves 1/8 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/8 tsp. ground allspice 1/8 tsp. black pepper 1/8 of a medium onion 1 small clove garlic 1/4 cup paprika Directions: 1. Clean shrimp and cook according to package directions; refrigerate. Cut celery into sticks. Refrigerate in cold water. 2. Prepare dips. Serve in bowls with shrimp and celery. Red Dip: Mix all ingredients. Makes about 1 cup. Pink Dip: Mix all ingredients. Makes about 3/4 cup. Red Pepper Paste: 1. Measure 2 tablespoons wine and remaining ingredients except paprika into blender container; cover. Blend until smooth, scraping sides of blender frequently. With remaining wine, wash spices down sides of blender. 2. Heat paprika in saucepan 1 minute. Add spice mixture in small amounts, stirring until smooth. Cook unitl hot, about 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Cool. Red and Pink Dips can be prepared 48 hours in advance. Store covered in refrigerator. I would use food processor instead of blender. It was hard to scrape the sides of the blender! * didn't like the pink sauce as well. Next time I will make this sauce using the chili recipe on this posting.

Mellen, The box from you arrived today. Wow! I was thinking it was like Christmas morning as I pulled one thing after another out of the box. The only bad part is that I am almost certain that I was here when the mail was delivered (probably around 1:30 or 2 p.m.) and the postal worker did not let me know. They usually beep the horn so you can walk out and get the box. Around 7:30 p.m. I said to my husband that maybe we should check the front porch in case the box came and there it was! My husband was a dear and helped me get the plants either in the ground of in pots for the night. You sent me so many plants that I love, I just hope they settle in okay. I put some water on them even though it was almost dark at that point. Anyway, I can't possibly list it all - Mary Ellen sent a beautiful Christmas ornament decorated with fancy lace that I will certainly keep from year to year. I also got a candle, memo pad, journal, angel plant poke and squirrel pot hanger (these two are so cute!) With the journal, I decided I will try to keep myself a little better organized with my plants and will write it what I received and who it came from. I completely lose track of that. Mary Ellen also was a true treasure as a friend because she had already prepared plant markers with the plants' names to stick alongside them. That is so good. I usually rush to put them in a pot or the ground and think I will remember and do a label later and I don't get around to it and forget the name. (I know no one else does that! LOL) Anyway, as for the plants, I got: Sweet Potato Vine 'Marguerita' (I have two sweet potato vines but didn't have this one), a Polka Weigela - it is a shrub - couldn't believe it when this came out of the box! - a cigar plant, a Sum and Substance Hosta that I have wanted for a few years now, a heuchera 'Chatterbox', two daylilies - Heron, and Custard Candy, and a flowering maple (also called Abutilon - I have a different variety that I bought at the Botanical Gardens plant sale this spring and it bloomed all summer and I love it so I am really happy to have another!) Does anyone grow these? I am wondering how to get more (root or save seeds)? I also wonder if they are winter hardy in our weather. Guess I will do a little research. Anyway, I know I did not list some of it. Thanks so much Mary Ellen. I know you weren't feeling well and I don't know how you put all this effort into the box that you sent. Thank you so much! I can't wait to get into the play mode again! That coat rack turned out not to be such a big deal, pounding the rebar stake in was the hardest, used my level, neighbors must have thought I was nutz until they saw what I was doing with it. The coat rack cost $2 and the gazing ball $40+. I had to have that exact one. Maybe could have gotten one a lot cheaper but it's a perfect fit. Lawn guy went ape you know what over it, and my daughter found him one. Had to be exactly like mine. I did have to tie scraps of chicken wire on it so they will have something to cling to, but it hardly shows at all.

A profound thank you to whoever it was here that thought of doing that with it. I never would in a million years.

You have so much room, and it sounds like you have a lot of energy. I wish I had more room for my roses w/sun but I don't think I could keep it up by myself.

If I can grow a clematis, anybody can, seriously. I failed w/one years ago, but I just plant them, mix a little compost in the dirt in the bottom of the hole, small digging job, water, cover with mulch (they like cool feet) and keep it weeded, give them something to climb on. They do the rest, well sometimes you have to catch a stray piece of vine and weave it in carefully so as not to damage the growing tip. In spring you have to cut them back and clear away the dead tops, no biggie. They bounce back and grow like crazy, don't get the multitude of bugs and stuff my roses do.

My son had the house painted that summer later in 2007, bless him!

I've seen so many neat things here but I can't play until I get two spots edged. And mulch. I need so darn much and don't have any saved up.

Luckily I don't have to have a deer fence. That was a major issue for you to get accomplished! It never ends though, does it?

I'm really enthusiastic about perennials, didn't think I could grow them, but I start most from seed now and buy a few. I started these from seed a couple years ago in the spring, and have some more percolating now.

Would never have guessed it was a "coat rack" w/o your 1st pic! Very beautiful...the perfect gazing ball! Just enjoy whatever you can do...the rest will wait! A cool, wet Spring here also...you flower pic is very pretty! TFS! Jeanne S.

Leveta, no, I didn't like the full view shot I got of it but will post a small version down below. I didn't like it because I don't have a blurry background like I like. That is my neighbor's house.

Those four now "feet" guess they're for hats proved worthwhile in that they helped stabilize it on one rod of 5/8" rebar, sank into the ground a little (the rebar I pounded way down in). But they are hollow and it might have been a little smarter to reinforce them, think they'll be ok. If they break or rust off, I'll figure out some other way to stabilize it. I didn't attach the rebar. The tubing of the rack upright was hollow and just slid over the rebar.

I saw where somebody made a nice trellis by lacing lattice onto PVC pipe. Installed it the same way by just sliding it over two pieces of rebar, one each side, instead of one post like mine.

You guys are great. You made me think of another idea for an area where I have a rose that keeps suckering and getting huge. Instead of making a rebar teepee which people use for climbing roses, I could design one a little differently for my rose to climb on.

I built a stand to hold my grow lights, two banks of two so I could root cuttings and grow things under lights. I modified a design I found on the web.

I'd say a man would have done it better, and at my age it's kind of hard to pound w/a 3# hand sledgehammer, wore me out the other day just doing 2 fence posts sunk deep enough in damp ground to suit me. Some men have done very nice work for me, and some have done a sloppy job because they hurry and think I don't know any better.

A plumber mind you screwed up the drain to my sink and water was spilling all over the kitchen floor, got fed up with sticking it back on only to happen all over again. It wasn't aligned properly in the first place. I took a photo of how it is under the sink, printed it on plain copy paper and took it to the hardware store. They helped me with the right parts, needed a flexi connector. I did it all myself. I'm really not handy but can be when I'm desperate and want to save money.

I'll see if I can find a photo of my grow lights setup I made. Promise me you won't laugh. Most people wouldn't put up with this in their dining room, and you can tell I smoke and am a horrible housekeeper. I can't be running up and down to the basement checking plants every day.

You turned the coat rack upside down & that's how you got the perfect ball holder!! I got that! It looks great!! Whose house is in the pics- I gather it's the neighbor's, the bottom pic shows the drain across the walkway! Very dangerous!! Hope they changed it by now. Your plant lights look like they would work great but if that's where the cops drive by they may be wondering what it is you are growing! LOL Might have to answer some questions if you don't have another curtain there. You have a lot of ability if you can fix a drain yourself!! Not many of us would attempt it!! We all slow down as we get farther along on the road of life! Trick is to not stop but just keep putting 1 foot ahead of other(well, no, I'd fall doing that) But you have the right idea & sharing with others gives you encouragement to do more!! Jan

Thanks, all, for the nice feedback. I try to get certain chores done every day, at least 3, that keeps me going. If I don't get it all like I want, it's better than not trying, and things are very slowly starting to pay off in general. People don't tend to see the flaws and problems in your gardening.

My neighbor's house is the one with the tan siding. Mine is blue. My son's ex gf picked out the color, I didn't like it at first but am very happy with it now. More needs doing on my house. I had that tan shade all picked out, it started out forest green, then I had it done that brown years ago and didn't want those colors again. But when the former owner beat me to it, I didn't want the same color. Had the accent colors all picked out, too. I did get 3 coats of teal paint on my stepladder trellis I got the idea for here, so you can imagine that set back my plans for that.

Anybody is welcome to save my photo(s) and put it on a photo hosting site and ask for one on Freecycle with a link to the photo or Craig's List, don't know if he allows photos. Better to use the first one so they won't know what you want it for or you know what could happen. Might take several tries.

I don't know much about gutter and drainpipe problems. He seems to know what he is doing over there, nice fellow. I won't say anything to him, but I can't see what is dangerous about it other than tripping over it. But it might be contributing to a bad problem with water in my basement right there.

Hope I answered all your questions, have to get ready for an appointment and am getting ready to get some more rose cuttings going under my lights.

Oh, I had to laugh about the cops. I thought of that one the minute I got that going. I wouldn't grow that stuff if you paid me a fortune, and if I had a mind to, there are other places I could hide it lol. I just plain don't care if they see it. I have to have the curtains open so I can see the birds and outside when I relax in my messy spot there. They do have no knock warrants now though. Heck with it. I'm gonna live my life.

kudzukween, I'd be happy for you to use my photo in your blog. After all, if it hadn't been for suggestions here, it wouldn't be what it is.

I'm not in this for noteriety or credit, so you don't have to use my name, just say a friend on a forum or however you want to handle it. It's in Eastern Iowa. I picked it up at a yard sale I stumbled across on the way home. The gazing ball came from bestnest.com. Stainless steel.

I was at Restore Habit (haven't been for awhile - addictive), and there was a pretty wooden one there; they wanted $25 for it, I have enough projects lined up, but that is also an otion, too.

I really appreciate all the positive feedback. I'll try to get my email address back into my profile in case somebody wants to contact me about any of it.

Aliska, yes, that gutter is just up in the air enough so very easy for someone to get their foot under it & go flying, especially older relative that might not have such good eyes. Could add an extension & move it down to right of pic & then part going over sidewalk would probably be flat & not as likely to trip someone. Might tell him you are worried that someone might sue him if they fell. By moving it down to right might keep water out of your basement also. Purplemoon is just putting your lovely photo on this site's "Inspiration Album" it is for Garden Junker's to get ideas. I don't know how to put the link on but someone else will. Then you can see all kinds of stuff folks on here have done. Purplemoon just puts the best pics on!!! My folks were next to "pot" growing place & didn't know it for several yrs they went up the coast & took care of bro. 5 acre place 2 days a week & stayed in the nice mobile home there. Lady next door was widow, really nice!! She moved out,foreclosed I think & realtor had to get sheriff out to open place as she took all the keys. Upstairs was 1 big pot farm with lots of lights & water system- everyone was shocked- my folks couldn't believe it until they went up there & took a peek in,it had an outside only entrance but folks had never seen person who rented upstairs, lady never mentioned a renter.They tried to catch him/her but didn't. He probably came late at night,he didn't live there or was the widow! So you never know!! sunnyca, re the drainpipe and pot. I'm the one likely to trip over it as his gate comes open and slams back in the wind, get tired of listening to it, he's sometimes away for long periods. So I go out at night w/flashlight and secure it with a bungee cord. I'll think about how I could bring up about the pipe in a non-combative manner because he had a quiet party the other night w/much coming and going; even a young person could trip over it. I wouldn't have one going over my side walk like that, don't remember how the older neighbors who died had it. I'm the one who's worried about getting sued if I don't get my huge, beloved tree taken down this season, 'nuther story.

The crazy thing about that house is that I toyed with buying it when it was all run down and razing it so I could have a double lot to grow more beautiful plants than I can. The old couple who were friends died, and it was $40 thou, most places here top $100 thou and more surrounding, nice neighborhood. The spec buyer (not current neighbor) put up this enormous garage, I hate the thing, big as a small house, helped to hasten the ruination of my huge maple tree by digging so deep for foundation and chopping up important roots not 4' from that tree. Then to add insult to injury, left cow pies of concrete in my yard and ruined my driveway. I didn't notice the driveway was messed with (excavating and grade) until later when I tried to drive up it to put things in garage, don't use garage for car but often parked my car there in the summer. I have a permanent easement across the property for access to my driveway I can no longer use, tore out something on my muffler. So I fume over it, but am not the type to pick fights with people. I got a feeling that the home spec guy's father or fil could play hardball, big in with the city. They never displayed their building permit like I do, called the city to see if they got one, said they did, and that the garage met specs but was max. I do not believe it. Other neighbors wanted a taller garage almost a block away and another one huge trelliswork on their property, and I get papers I have to sign off on as did other neighbors.

It just makes me mad, try to be a good neighbor, tolerant, laid back, and maybe they don't know the grief that has caused me; it's not my property. And I was nice enough to let them have access to my yard to build that garage, and they didn't even have the courtesy to ask. So it's life, and I just have to vent about that sometimes, and have enough problems of my own, but you get that with neighbors even in the country.

If I start something difficult involving people, my anxiety goes on overdrive so bad I've ended up in hospital; that's why I tend to be passive, don't meet things headon.

I have read about old ladies growing pot believe it or not. Hard to tell if that widow was in on it or not. And I not only runon sentences and paras, drift OT, and get too chatty, then go quiet for long periods because I'm busy w/something else.

Nice! I looked at your blog and could relate to some of it. I love some of your downhome ideas and cookin'. Those pork steaks, corn and potatoes look mighty good. Sorry for the vent above. Sometimes I just get going like that.

Oh and thanks for the courtesy of letting me know so I could have a look. Get a kick out of it actually. My coatrack is going to be famous, has gone prime time.

You know who it was who first suggested I turn it upsidedown like that? adellabedella. june468 suggested the gazing ball further down. I used advanced google and found the original thread. Apr 29, 2007.

I'll drop in on your blog now and then, some good stuff there, but I don't do pokeweed lol. Maybe I would if I knew what it was. I did eat a dandelion leaf just for the heck of it. You can have them!
