Tell me about Dawn

Hi,

I'm interested in Dawn, but it's hard to search for information for a plant with such a common name. It's going to be on the east side of my house, with perhaps 2-3 hours of sun daily. I understand that it is shade-tolerant. WIll that be enough?

What color are the anthers? In some pics they look purple, some reddish, some brown.

How bright is the pink wash?

I was planning on planting it with Dr. Ruppel (another Group II). Will they take forever to get big enough to be a vertical accent in my garden?

I have Dawn. For me, it starts out a very pale pink and fades to white. I like it, but it is by no means long flowering. The photo from Brushwood, linked below, is accurate in my experience.

I can see this is an older thread - but hope I might still get some info/advice: I planted a Blue Muffin about 3 years ago - but in a NE exposure in a foundation area at front of my home - as it was just what I wanted for the spot. Its sun is also reduced somewhat from the shadow/overhang of the house. I haven't had any flowers or berries (though I have an arrowhead and some others in my backyard, though unfortunately none on the list of viburnum pollinators in this thread) - though the plant has been in good health. In current circumstances, am I at all likely to get flowers/berries, - or do I need to re-site it? I took a tug at it today with my fork - and the roots seem pretty well-developed. It's also been growing 'straight up' - and I'd like to prune it a bit for some shape at this time - whether it stays where it is or I move it - I assume that won't affect the 'lack of' flowers/berries this year (!); ie, I assume w/o flowers I won't get berries. Thank you for any information or advice those on this forum can offer. 'Much appreciated.

Hi Muffin, The "April Dawn" has been in the ground for about five years now. It's under an American holly tree somewhat and is about four and a half feet tall and about three feet wide, but still not fully "bushy". It had about thirty flowers last year, and there are maybe forty buds this year. It blooms here in late April into May, depending on the weather. The plant looks fine but the buds so far show no sign of swelling or color. It may just be late, or they may have been damaged. Read below about my "April Blush", which I hope is indicative of the potential for my "April Dawn" and "April Rose". I go check on the buds every day now, hoping to see some sign that they will open soon. My "April Blush" camellia has performed well for over 13 years. It's just a bit above the six-foot-high fence, and about five feet wide. Last year was by far it's best year as far as shear number of blooms, I'd say 150+ easily. It's bloom time here is April to May. This year, so far, the plant itself looks fine. It probably has a few more buds than it did last year, however, I don't see any color or signs of buds swelling yet, and that may indicate that the buds were killed by the cold. It remains to be seen. But overall, I am very pleased with this beautiful evergreen shrub.

I've grown Acalypha wilkesiana since I arived in Florida 25 years ago. They take full sun to 1/2 day shade. And yes, they can freeze back in tempatures that dip around 32 degrees. In south Florida, they can reach upwards of 15 foot. but here in St Pete, 6 foot is more like. I have several around my yard. My big red one - "Louisiana Red" stops traffic. The white one named "Java white" always gets an Wow! And don't forget about the chenille plant, it's in the same family, too. I think they're very easy to grow. If you can grow a hibiscus, you will not have any trouble growing one of these. Here you go, the uppers have the calander hanging on one side and emergency numbers on right door and all the office things live here. There is an outlet for charging cameras and "my" stuff. On the counter is an outlet for the land line. Antique tray is our magnet board. Top drawer has a powerstrip attached to the back for DH's electronics this is "his" drawer for keys and anything else. Bottom drawer is the coupons, and "junk" drawer as I have found it is inevitable! Basket is home for shoes. There is now a cushion on the dog kennel. Once Buddy is no longer we can pop an end panel on kennel and the lid under cushion lifts for more storage. Hope this helps! From Kitchen before and after From Kitchen before and after

This is Dawn. She was planted last year as a two year old purchase. It is planted on the east side of the wood shed heavily shaded by an apricot tree. I think my mother has it on some sort of water system but I could be mistaken. The tap sits immediately to the left of the plant.

My mother and I have determined that soil content plays a very large roll in the final coloring of flowers. We determined this simply by comparison as we both have several plants in common and I live 20 mins south. My soil is "city" soil ammended with my own compost.

Try Huldine, campaniflora, or Alba Luxurians for whitish colored clematis. I couldn't live without any of them. Huldine is white with pink ribbing down the backside, campaniflora is a white to white with a purplish overcast, and Alba Luxurians is white but the early flowers have green coloration on the ends. The green color disappears for me once it warms up and stays that way. All three are type III pruning so you just whack them back in the winter and being type IIIs, they are much more resistant to succumbing to wilt.

Huldine is on my list. Will she bloom with a once-blooming climbing rose (Dr. Huey)? Or should I see about a white type I or II?

Ladychroe, I am not a rose person so I don't know diddly how the pairing would work out as far as blooms go. Perhaps someone who knows the blooming habit and time for this rose could help you more than I. The only rose I grow is one that is a scrambler that I took a cutting from a neighbor's plant and got one going! LOL

I prefer Growing the Pruning group 3's with my roses but saying that I do have some 2's planted with them..I have both Clematis "Huldine" and "John Huxtable" planted with my red climbers "Red Eden" and "Tess of the d'Urbenvilles"..you'll like either white one and they are both vigorous...I think "JH" is a bit more than "H"...Jeanne
