Fremontodendron californicum napensis

I have a San Gabriel I just put in the ground in Oct. Theodore Payne told me it might survive the winter. I do get frost and got it last night.
The tag said good to 20 degrees. I told them I would do it as an experiment. They are short lived sometimes.
I am about 1400 feet.

I have some San Gabriels here for many years. We are about 300 feet above Calistoga. Cold has never been a problem. If you get through the first two years the only problem will be keeping them from over growing their space. One I had to remove because it grew over an access path. If planted where another tree will shade it from the sun it will grow at a very large angle. One over 20 feet tall on a slope grew at such an angle it pulled the roots out of the ground during the winter when the soil was wet. I cut the trunk off at about four feet, it was 6 inches in diameter. I drove a steel fence post in the ground up hill and with a come along attached over a period of days was able to pull the trunk close to vertical. With it lashed to the fence post anchor it recovered and now I keep pruning it to prevent another problem. Al

Madspinner, I was driving up to Mt. Baker a few weeks ago and thought of how cool it would be to live in the mountain foothills... of course a lot of the plants I am growing wouldn't last too long up there! On Olearia phloggopappa, I have sent seed to a few people and no one has had any luck with it yet. I will collect fresh seed and try it myself this summer. It's possible that it needs cold stratificaiton. Anyone who wants to discuss this further please do so via email. I'm glad you enjoyed the photos.

I know of a big Fremontodendron which has been growing in Seattle for many years. Temps there will sometimes drop well below freezing.

I'll give it a try. The spot I'll be placing these are on a slope in front of a stand of Manzanita that gets full sun during the summer and partial shade during the winter.
