Wow, you have some really beautiful plants. I don't have much of a garden yet, so my period of bloom is more limited than I'd like. Something I have to work on as I expand. Here I'm working on iris, lavender, columbines, violas and geranium... and hoping the roses and peonies will start soon.

Auteck, I've been warned against afternoon "watering" as opposed to light "misting". Which one are you doing? I will try to get some updated pictures for you. heelsfan, I just came back from columbia, SC which is only 4 hours drive from here and what a difference in climate. It has rained here twice in the last 2 months yet yesterday in SC I got thunderstormed on 8 times in one day. It was like a rain forest. That is the kind of humid coastal plain weather that puts that tropical swamp grasses into high gear and we haven't had that here and we don't normally even get that kind of weather until August. If you're having or have had that kind of hot humid weather with temps in the mid 90's and above then that really isn't what I'm having to contend with. I did see some tall fescue that actually looked like it was in excellent shape though.

Thanks for the feed back! And there's no secret.lol.I took the cuttings on 11-12, I usually like the fresh red springtime growth for cuttings they seem to root much faster(usually 7-14 days) than cuttings taken in November.But these took almost three weeks to root enough to transplant (12-3). Also I don't like cutting on my plants that late in the year but I have much more time in the winter to spend on them. That way by spring they are ground or 5 gallon bucket ready so I'm not watering everyday or even twice a day in the hot summer. I'm a newbie too so any help or "secrets" would be of help.

Raeanne - You and your family continue to be in my thoughts. I was walking this morning and I just kept thinking about you and what you must be feeling. I hope the memorial service goes well and you can honor you mother's life. We just got back from a giant flea market and all I got was a cantaloupe, 4 zucchini and a pound of string beans. We drove 30 miles, spent $5 on gas and saved $2 on the produce. LOL But I had fun going and looking. Was hoping to find some good paperback books for a $1 but nothing interested me. We stopped to see DH's car (his '62 Nova) that was just painted. It still needs a final sanding and then buffed, but it is looking good. Hopefully DH can bring it home in a few weeks and start putting all the trim back on. I know he is itching to drive it. It has been in a state of disrepair since the fall. Our garage looks like it belongs to someone else. DH and I threw so much stuff away we had to help the garbage collectors this morning. Yesterday a guy in a pick up truck took a filing cabinet and 2 lawn chairs. Someone this morning took an old window screen. All had seen better days, but one's man junk is another man's treasure. I just know that I have lots more room to get in and out of my car. Told DH that I felt like I was in the wrong garage. He is worrying that in two weeks he will need something that I convinced him to throw away! LOL I made pulled pork and coleslaw for dinner. Now I need to make some BBQ sauce and snap the beans I just bought. This is going to be a good dinner. Come on over, I have plenty. I still haven't mastered cooking for two. Nothing yet on the Olearia phloggopappa seed. I'll try the second half of the bunch and see what happens.

I've had some Olearia phloggopapa seed sown on top of my
tv since mid March and nothings happening. Any recommendations ? I did read somewhere that they take between 1 and 2 months.

By the way, fabulous plants and pictures.

Madspinner, I was driving up to Mt. Baker a few weeks ago and thought of how cool it would be to live in the mountain foothills... of course a lot of the plants I am growing wouldn't last too long up there!

On Olearia phloggopappa, I have sent seed to a few people and no one has had any luck with it yet. I will collect fresh seed and try it myself this summer. It's possible that it needs cold stratificaiton. Anyone who wants to discuss this further please do so via email.

I'm glad you enjoyed the photos.

Great pics, Ian. I love the combination of textures in the plantings. The Grevillea x gaudichaudii is a knock out!

Presumably when you typed Penstemon 'douglasii' here you meant P. davidsonii.

Ron, you are correct. I also goofed on the Fremontodendron, it is x 'California Glory'. It is blooming even better now. I guess when you get old like me, you start to lose your mind.

Yup, I'm not that far from Mt Baker. I'm not too far into the hills, just the very beginning, but it is enough that I'm not always sure what will make it over the winter. Who would think that a 6 mile move would make such a diffrence?!

It is very beautiful here though. I spend a lot of time staring. Very easy to get distracted when I'm outside! I just find myself doing nothing and looking at the hills, the water, the birds, the clouds... the grass rolling in the field.

Great photos Ian. The color on the Meconopsis x sheldonii 'Lingholm' is stunning! Is that true or a trick of the camera? I dare say I've never seen a bloom of that color.

And Madspinner regarding your view: I was just thinking "Forget the garden I'd like to stand by the fence a spell and gaze through the meadow!" Very soothing territory, reminds me of home but we have more trees close up. Love your iris crop. Would it be "Batik" by any chance?
