Norma is fantastic! And awesome of you to pay it forward. I missed out on the kind giveaway so I went on ebay and purchased some as my DH killed our last jade plant a while ago. Did you just lean he leaf against the side of the pot on top of the gritty mix and spritzed with water? I hope I'll know what to do when my cutting comes - I don't want to kill these!

Most of the cuttings I recieved from Norma are still trying to root. I think 2-3 of the 5 are just now poking out some roots, I wonder why it's taking mine longer?

Rooting takes 2 - 4 weeks on average. How long has it been?

Looks like I got them June 14th so tomorrow would make it 4 weeks, they don't look bad by any means - infact they don't look different at all (the ones that haven't sent out roots yet). Would humidity slow down the process? As I've said before... we've been at 100% humidity for about a week now. Thanks :)

I tend to think that humidity does slow the process...

Are they potted? Or just laying out somewhere?

Newnie, I have the same problem rooting Jades in FL...I don't have the best track record rooting them especially when its extremely humid. Mine seem to root faster in early fall, where our humidity is not so high. Seems like it takes mine 2-3 months before they have a fair amount of roots, yet people that live in places like CA where humidity is not very high only takes about a month or less. Sometimes I've had them NOT root at all...and slowly shrivel up and die :o( I'm sure yours will root, might just take a little longer. Best of luck!

Well, I'm glad to hear that they still have a chance to root and that it may just take a little longer. Do you think I should bring them inside the house then where it is much less humid? I keep my house at about 77 degrees so it's still pretty warm inside.

Newnie, I'd go ahead and pot the cuttings.
They will root much better indoors. I put mine in a window that is cool, with no direct sun.

If I were you, I would pot them up and put them in a windowe that doesn't get direct light. Mine got bright afternoon sun, and 2 weeks later, they were rooted. Also, DONT WATER!!!

I don't want any one thinking it is their fault. It's a bad time of year for jades in the eastern states, early spring would have been better, but it didn't come up then, we have been having fog and cold weather still, I wear a sweater until early afternoon, when I finally warm up and don't garden until it does. Don't put the leaf cutting into the soil, only lay them face down, that may be of help. After all the fuss I will never do this again. It just caused too much trouble on the forum. I'm not here to do that. Norma

I am actually in the central United States - the humidity is far worse this year than it normally is thanks to the bad weather down in Gulf! I am very sorry to hear that you won't be doing this again - your package arrived a week before my birthday and I've had a really hard 6-10 months and your generosity made me feel a lot better about people in general. Even if some of the cuttings you sent me do not root for me, I will not be mad - I will think of it as a lesson learned. Once again, thank you so much.

Oh, and I will lay them back on top instead of putting them in the soil.

They'll root, just pls. give it time & patience, but they WILL root, I'm quite sure. (But don't water them til they do.)

Silly PG, I do not know why you think I am being impatient but I am not. Andrew said his had already rooted so I inquired about why several of mine had not - and it turns out I did have an issue that I needed to fix. Please do not think I've given up hope :)

Yes, go ahead and stick the stems into the mix - not too deep.
It's really difficult to recommend when to water according to a schedule.
But it's perfectly safe to water once you see new growth.

Sigh, I have bad news about my cuttings from Norma (and my jade cutting from Mike). Somehow my dogs got into the empty room that is always closed where I had my cuttings at. Most are now bare, chewed up stems...I was so mad when I saw that I didn't even know what to do.

I went and did the only thing I knew would make me feel slightly better. I went to the local nursery...I talked to the owner there (pretty much the only time I have seen him at the times I go) and he said he had never heard of a 'Hummel's Sunset' and looked through one of his catalogs that he orders starts from. That was a no-go, but the fact that he was willing to help made me feel a little better. I ended up buying some KG Aloe hybrids 'Marco', 'Guido', 'Donnie', and 'Diego' even though I'm not a huge aloe fan... but these were very neat and on sale for only 3.50 each!!! As well as 4 types of sedum :)

So, I'm still upset that I lost all of my really cool jade cuttings (many that I've haven't been able to find) but that's just life I guess (unfortunately, very much like my life :( )

I have a general question that I want to ask the people who recieved cuttings from Norma.

Were you guys upset in any way with Normas cuttings or any of her tips that she gave us to get them going?

I only ask this because I think she was so generous to offer these cuttings to the 10 people who got them. Her kindness was much appreciated and I was very glad that she gave helpfull advice to me and the others on this forum. I just don't want Norma to be upset with us. I thought everyone was greatfull for there cuttings.

Hello everyone.....I am back for a few minutes to say that I have been waiting for mine to start growing since I received mine, before I wanted to share any news..Well, they are starting new leaves only after a short time and YES, I THANK NORMA, which I have also done in private many times over, for the cutting she gave me..

But let me tell you something, I believe Norma thinks that we are very grateful! In fact she knows that I am even without having to say it publicly as she has not done so about the one I sent her either, but expressed in private:-)

She has a heart of GOLD, and if it weren't her advice and generosity, I would be a few jades short of one, and would not have been able to root anything. I have lurked here for years, and was always afraid to join here, thinking to many people were prickly, but at the same time I learned a wealth of info from Norma in private..

Also, Andrew, what you are doing is a good thing and a very good example of a decent human being!

I will be back to post some pictures once I get my car back where my camera is..

Britty! That is the worst news I've heard this weekend!
Are any of the stems still viable? Even one unharmed segment can sprout a Jade.
If there are any pieces that are still whole, I say Please try to root them.

Also, how were the dogs able to get to the cuttings? Maybe you could move them
to a height of four feet off the floor at least...?

Okay, so... things ended up not being as bad as I originally thought. At first I only found a couple of leaves and some mostly bare stems. I ended up hunting down some barely harmed ones in the yard later that day. Most of them have stems chewed towards the bottom, so I cut off the chewed up part but on two of them almost the whole stem was chewed, so I just left them alone. Mike I think your cutting ended up fairing the best as well as the biggest cutting from Norma (yay!). Here's showing the aftermath...

I really have NO idea how they got in that back room. My only guess is that my dad used the jack and jill bathroom when he dropped something off when I was gone and left the door open to one of the bedrooms. So they went into one bedroom, went through the bathroom, to get to the far bedroom where they were at...and they pulled them from there out their doggie door.

I just to want all of you to know how proud that I am of all of you. You all act like adult people, helping each other, that was my main reason for being here, to that you will learn and help each other, and not nit pick, find fault. Disrespect others who are trying to help you. We all have information, it needs to be shared. Did you know if your water is hard just a drop of vinagar will do the trick to bring down the acid content. The Huntington is so successful because they use well water, natuarlly soft water from the ground. It does make a difference, (no water spots) Those who don't listen close their ears will end up as fools, if are not already so. It what you don't know that will hurt you. All of you now are Expert Crassula ovata growers, and don't need my help again. In the fall I will probably offer another 10 packages to fly out of here, not is not the time to cut them back. Norma

You are the nicest bunch of people i have found on a forum, Please help each other, I will send more later on. summer is not a root time, it's too hot for them, unless you are an experienced grower. They seem to like cool weather. I want to mention this: I have a white variegated plant that drops leaves and the babies do come up variegated, most of them do not, they revert back to green, Start them from a cutting and they won't revert back. I agree with Mike. I know I have a lot to learn and I love learning new things every chance I can! Your kindness is always aprreciated Norma! The cutting you sent to me is doing so well and believe it or not, it is growing!! Our nightine lows are in the 60's now. Occasionally we hit the 50's(All ready? Yuck!) as well. One of the small leaf jades I bought about a month ago is all ready turning purple! I slowed down on the watering and gave them all as much sun as possible and presto! My jades are gaining more color! Thanks again Norma!
