Is it too early for sweet peas in Coastal So. Cal?

The old saying goes: "Plant sweet peas before Labor Day if you want blooms by Christmas". I live in San Pedro,CA about a 1/2 mile from the sea. I have a white picket fence that borders the east side of my yard and it seems to get full sun all day. I would love to have sweet pea blooms climbing that fence by the holidays, but do you think it's still too warm? I'm new to in-ground seed-sowing and I (perhaps ignorantly) planted seeds of the vining kind along the fence just last weekend - taking Robert Smaus' advice. Now it seems so warm, I worry the seeds are cooking in the ground. I water in the mornings to keep the soil moist, but by late afternoon, the top layer of soil looks dry to me. Is there a better time to put the seeds in the ground and what are some of the indicators that the time is right (i.e. hi/lo temps, hours of full sun)? I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Have a great day!

Myles
