Coastal So Cal Mildew issues?

Does anyone else growing plumies in the Coastal areas of Southern California have powdery mildew issues?

For what ever reason I am having an issue with powdery mildew on some of my plumies in the patch. Only certain cultivars seem to be effect:

Smith's Candy stipe/apple

Guillots Sunset

Celadine,

ACW,

Grove Farm

Puu Kahea

Samirie

Gloria Schmidt

JL Pink Ruffles

Slaughters Pink

Stenopetala

I have other plants that are touching the infected plants like J105 is touching Smiths Candy Apple (this one is infected the worst.) but the J105 seems to be unaffected.

Is anyone else experiencing the same issue. I figuring since its been such a cool summer, temps averaging in the low to mid 70's, that this is the cause for the severe mildew issues. Smiths candy apple tends to get the powdery mildew frequently but when I spray with a 3 in 1, or fungicide it usually clears up the problem.

On a brighter note even with the cool temps I am getting some great colors!!

Musk Rainbow with its almost purple/lavender, ocher, and tan/browns,are performing well. I took pics with my IPHONE so sorry about the quality of the pics. I also did not adjust or play with the colors, the pics came straight from my phone and the colors are pretty right on.

I used a whole can of 3 in 1 today. My most shaded plants have been showing signs of powdery mildew recently. My golden rainbow and one of my Guillot's sunsets have it bad. I should have given them some 3 in 1 systemic but I got sidetracked so I just used the spray today. Some of my roses are not looking so good. usually this late in the season I leave things be but I hope for an indian summer fall. Nice picture, James, as usual. Bill

WOW, that purple on your Musk Rainbow is awesome! Those pictures are very nice! I heard it has a very nice scent also.

Ok, well call me the Good News / Bad News girl. Good News: the most fragrant rose that I have ever smelled is Color Magic (an HT). I planted one by my former back door and was so amazed that I planted two more. Magnificent wafts of fragrance as soon as I opened the door ~20' away, and that's with avg. coastal SoCal humidity, not Florida. YMMV, but I also loved the GIANT, mutable blooms which, even when cut fully open last a week in the house. ONE bloom will *completely* fill a LARGE room with sweet, sweet fragrance. Bad News: It could bloom more (or I could fertilize more). BUT, more important, it really would have done better for me with regular spray for mildew. Rust is not that big a deal, plant-wise, but in my experience, mildew will debilitate and kill it over time. It's a bloody shame, as Suzy would say. If you spray and have a cutting bed, this is a keeper. More Bad News: You will need to cross-reference mildew susceptibility for the fragrance suggestions above if you do not spray regularly. In particular, Double Delight: 2+ mildew; 4+ rust Rouge Royale: 4+ mildew even in 9% humidity in SoCal Mtns, don't bother Freddy Mistral, Sonia Rykiel: lovely but gone because I didn't spray Fragrant Cloud (and most anything orange) & Tiffany: 4+ mildew Good News: GramHat & Golden Celebration are bullet proof and I could not recommend them more. GramHat is pink, floppy and old-fashioned in fragrance and form, while GC, to me, is such a happy looking bush in bloom, no doubt due to my reaction to yellow, and also has very good fragrance and will try to fill a room. Blooms will blow faster, but it's a great repeater in this area. Good News: Anything Jeri recommends. Seriously. Good Hunting!

I don't know Young Lycidas either. Have never grown it, which is why I didn't make any comment on it. Of the Austinis I have grown, Princess Alexandra of Kent and Molineaux have been the best ones for me, by far. But I also like Munstead Wood, Ambridge Rose and Perdita. As for the visitors you are hosting in November, Paola, they are welcome to come to our rosey seminar also -- the more the merrier. Secret Garden Musk climber Reve d' Or *** Either Should do what you want admirably. Grandmother's Hat *** This is more a bush than a climber, tho it can be espaliered on a fence or trellis. But it will be a LOW climber. Barely filling that area. More for your smaller space. OTOH, it will be dependably free of disease, and will bloom almost continuously, if deadheaded. Candidates for my smaller space - a 7' trellis by 8-10' wide area facing east with 3'4 day full sun: Cornelia Blush Noisette *** For us, this was a bush. If you want a real climber, you need Setzer Noisette. OTOH, either of them MUST be deadheaded, or the blooms will turn brown and linger forever. Pinkie? - maybe too big? Climbing Rainbow's End Red Robin *** You mean "Ragged Robin," or 'Gloire des Rosomanes', right? It will definitely do this, and will do you proud. I can't think of a finer SoCal rose. Seriously. I've had a Joseph's Coat climber before but when it got big & thorny the pruning and dead heading was WOW! Candidates for my big space along a 4 ft. high wall by 20 ft. fence (it can have spaced trellises if necessary - faces south, sun pretty much all day): Old Blush *** Cl. Old Blush? LOVELY rose. It will mildew all year here. Ghislaine de Feligonde Jaune Desprez (can fall over?) *** Wants heat to bloom. I finally got one to grow, but -- three blooms a year? Really? 2 Rev d' Or *** Superb choice. 2 Mutabilis? *** VERY BIG SHRUB. Does not climb for us, and I've never seen it used that way. I read differing opinions on mildew concerning MAC (Madame Alfred Carriere), *** MAC will, as Kim notes, mildew at a low level ALL the time. Lamarque is far superior in this climate. FAR superior. And Sombreuil does not ball in my (Camarillo) conditions, or suffer from Botrytis, and I have grown it for almost 24 years. It can occasionally be touched by infinitesimal amounts of mildew, but that's so rare it's not worth talking about. plllog, we have a similar "micro-climate" here in Michigan. All along the lakeshore is zone 6, but less than 25 miles inland it's a whole 'nother zone, zone 5. Not as dramatic a change as skiiing and beaches, but it's always 10 degrees cooler at The Lake in the summer and 10 degrees warmer in the winter. sarah, we visited Dana Point while we were there too, I was looking for a date shake. Never did find one... Lars, hopefully I'll be seeing you this summer! Ellen, I'm sure we'll come again, but Jeremy comes here because he grew up here, his mother and brothers are here, and all the cousins. So, other family members visit occasionally but to see everyone, they have to come here. He likes July, LOL. Anyway, back to winterization! I saw the weather report, it's supposed to be down to 2F this weekend. I'm hoping my asparagus and garlic are mulched well enough as all the snow melted and that acts as insulation when it gets very cold. No snow, no insulating effect, hopefully those things are hardy enough to survive. Especially the asparagus, it's easier to grow more garlic. Annie

braddah, where u been? tried PM'ing you on MPG but your inbox was full. Hope u doing good and your season is coming along.
No PM issuues so far for me. 3n1's are good but if no work I know people who have had excellent results using a product by Dutchmaster called ZONE. It's a root protector, but for some reason it knocks out PM like a champ.

Your Musk Rainbow is absolutely gorgeous!!! I haven't seen such beauties....

Im sorry to hear about the PM in your area. I did have some issues earlier in the season with some of the PM and maybe spider mites. I did use the 3 & i spray, but it really did a number on the leaves since my temps here were at the highest peek around 100. I learned my lesson to wait. I even used it during the early , early morning hours.

When i emailed you about the "Mango Beauty" i realized that it was Dewaine who had that pic. I will try and get up with him later. Sorry about that!! LOL

My mind has been crazy with all of the weather...not to mention the brain freeze here!!! LOL

Bill: Thanks! The PM is so bad on some plants that the leaves look like their dusted in powder sugar, then they drop off.

Sunseeker: Thanks! There is a mild scent but it is very nice, a must have in every collection.

Kaz: Mahaloz brah! I haven't been around much on either MPG or GW. I bought another house so was busy fix up and renting out my original house while fixing up and moving into the new one and I am till busy getting more furnishings, etc, for it. I was also in Europe for 3 weeks, so was really busy this season. I really haven't been to my Long beach condo that much this season and will not be there this weekend, sorry Ill be missing you in LB.

Laura: Glad to see your alright after Irene! No worries about the Emails. Musk Rainbow is a definite must have.

I think I have some mildew too. Can anyone confirm this picture? Also, what is the "3 in 1" brand so I can get some? The only ones of mine affected are a "Hausten White" and a few rooted cuttings from it.
