Is it too early to move a rose--in SoCa?

I clipped myself a little nosegay this morning--Blue Girl, Memorial Day, Lady Emma Hamilton, Jude the Obscure, Young Lycidas and St. Cecilia--and found the powerfully sharp citrus scents on LEH and JtO so strong that they literally made the hair on my neck bristle and stand up, and my mouth watered--still waters as I am writing and thinking about their scents--as if I'd just had a sour sip of vinegar! Of course I positively love their strong scents; they were so overwhelming but still I could also smell the distinct sweetness of damask on Memorial Day and YL, even St. Cecilia's myrrh scent of the baby powder "dirty diaper" stink--rather feral to my nose--all I could smell up-close but BG, which I foolishly thought to be one of the better smellers. But no! BG--which I kept around with all her flaws of mildew and slight rust--BG's scent wasn't as good as I remembered: no lemony face cream or tonic water smells from Grandma's days, but a moderate sweetness with a dim hint of maculated mold? (I don't know why it never occurred to me to cut a bouquet of mixed roses to smell and compare the different fragrances.) Well, I was a little surprised and, in happy sadness, a little relief--resolved--determined finally--which got me thinking aloud to myself: I need to dig out the remaining 2 plants of BG and put the space to better use. I could grow them in pots. But the first BG I dug up last month for my landlord and planted it for him in the backyard died. I know people in cooler climates have successfully moved and relocated roses around this time of the year, or even earlier. So after this aimless rambling--too much coffee and not enough sleep--I want to ask whether it's best to dig up the roses later in the season, say, Nov. or Dec. for folks in the southland?

Or should I save myself such grief and just SP them? Either way, they have to come out. It's eviction time!

You can probably manage it. BUT we are having continued hot/dry conditions -- no change in the coming week.

We, too, have something we badly need to move, but we are waiting for the weather to become a bit cooler and more humid.

Depending on where you are in SoCal, if you just want to shovel prune the offenders and not worry about trying to save them, sure, dig them out and send them off to the great landfill in the sky. But, if your hopes are to move them successfully, I would wait until there are chances of rain. I'm not transplanting any of my seedlings from the seed tables until there aren't dry winds; heat spikes and low humidity. IF we get rains, all the moving around you want to do will be accomplished much more easily and successfully. If you are already getting rain, go for it. Unfortunately, like Jeri, we aren't receiving any relief from the aridity. Kim

Yes, fashion and noveltly play a role in the hybrid tea sector of the industry. 'First Prize' and 'Touch of Class' were top exhibition roses for 8 or 10 years after their introduction. This made them temporarily famous and widely recommended by rose societies. Then I guess the judges got tired of them. Being susceptible to mildew makes them less attractive to West Coast growers. Anyway, they never quite made it to "classic" status. 'Chicago Peace' is probably the one on your list that would qualify. 'Secret' was fairly new and popular when you started your garden. There are probably fewer HT varieties on display nowadays, and the box stores tend to favor varieties that are very famous. Beginners tend to choose roses they have heard of, like 'Tropicana' (not a very good rose). Go to HelpMeFind.com for a list of vendors for any variety.

Here are the promised pictures of the things moved- Lets start by showing the two shrubs moved. Fortunately they are not large shurbs but the guys had to do some work on the hill before they got planted. Now since the shrubs were out of the planter, two roses were moved in. Showing a longer view of the area of the front yard. The roses are the lighter colored ones in the second of the half round planters. Seeing it all from another view. A big empty spot in my sidyard rose garden from those roses that moved out front. And now here is the rose moved into the rear of the garage. Poor thing was looking the worst of everything that was moved. And here is the bigger empty spot were both Carefree Delight and the Gift used to be in my sideyard. They came even further out from those landscape blocks just put there now. You can see the dirt areas were things were dug up. It looks quite different along that area of the yard as when you stood here you used to see those big roses. Closeup of the area uptsairs with the moved Carefree Delight. Landscape shot of the bed upstairs including Carefree Delight. And thats it for the big rose moving project the other day. But I plan to move more roses. The bigger projects of the needed moves are my approx 5 foot tall Bonica shrub rose that is going to go in the third of the planter boxes in the front yard. That would be directly in back of the two Charles Aznavour roses there now. The next thing planned is to move my two Flower Carpet Appleblossom Roses, one into the back yard and the other repositioned from were it is now. They are not very tall but they spread out alot. The big deal will be tying them up and then lifting the spreading canes so they they can be dug because as they are now, you could not put a shovel thru them.

I have been thinking a lot about comfort zones since Katrina. People refused to get on planes to go to states with low unemployment rates, and inexpensive housing so I asked myself where I would be willing to go. I am from Washington State. I would be pretty comfortable going to Oregon, Idaho, Colorado, Montana, the Dakotas, and Arizona. Anything else seems too far away, too foreign, too unfamiliar. I think this carries over into retirement planning. I couldn't go to Georgia because it is too far away. Until it got too expensive, people from Washington who wanted a warmer climate when they retired went to Caifornia. Now it is Arizona and Arizona is where I plan to go. It seems to me that people in the Northeast are more likely to stay on the east coast. I don't know what people in the heartland do. Do you go to Texas, New Mexico or ? Part of it is that I don't want to be more than a 3 hour plane ride from my children, but I think there is more to it than that. There may be very little difference from one state to another, but I don't know that and something in me seeks the familiar. Coming from a "blue" state, I will settle into the only "blue" county in Arizona. I would like to be more adventurous, but I always find myself seeking out the familiar. Someone I knew years ago had moved to Washington from the east coast. She said that it was so important to her that television was the same everywhere. Some people derided her comment because of her reliance on television, but I think I know what she meant. Once while visiting in South America, I found myself watching Plaza de Sesamo (Sesame Street) just for the familiar characters.

You can chance it but if you don't have a pressing need, it's going to be better later. If I am going to move them early, I like to wait until a period of cool or even better, rain is on the way. Something that will give at least 5 days of cool cloudy humid conditions after the move. Late Nov-Jan is always safer here

I don't think we'll be seeing rain any time soon. And of course, it's unseasonably hot and dry, is it still Santa Ana?
The whole 5--is it 5 already?--years I've living in SoCal I vaguely remember rain, or what some locals consider rainfall here during the wet season. (I would really like a downpour, a thunderstorm with lightning claps etc... but that's not the case--I guess I would have to go to the desert or go up to mountains for that!) I'm in Los Angeles--about 15 minute from downtown. I think we have a little micro-climate here, it's always a few degrees cooler than the temp. reported for downtown.

Well, I guess I'll wait till Dec. for the move or even later--since I can't think of anything I have as replacements off my head right now.

Yes. Do wait. In a normally-rainy year (no, you haven't seen one) good conditions should continue well into February.

We in SoCal -- we must all pray for rain here, and snow in the Transverse Ranges.
