I could not get pictures of the moving because it was all I could manage to run around and supervise each part of the project to make sure things were done correctly and placed correctly. If you just leave things alone they don't get done right. If it doesn't rain tomorrow, I will take pictures of the roses in those new spots. For once I am hoping for rain, especially overnight, to settle everything in.

It did take all afternoon starting around noon and they ending up leaving at 7PM. And they worked all day, I kept them going. It was just a big project.

I took some pictures but not downloaded yet. I don't know how well everything will show up. Poor CAREFREE DELIGHT has all her blooms clusters heavily drooping and any flowers which were blooming are gonners. Thats not a surprise to me and I figgure I will just cut it back some. One it settles in, it will rebloom I am sure.

I watered, watered, and watered some more this morning. It figgures the one time I would like to have had rain overnight there was none.

Of course! CD will be fine, I am sure. remember to trickle-water her so she has plenty of time to sip it up!

Yes, well I ordered about 30 roses mail order in the past two weeks so had to start working on projects I put off this spring. It does look much better were it is now, it looks like it belongs there. Plus it gives me the room to make a new little rose section of florabundas (or polyanthas) in the space the two big roses used to take up.

Here is a picture of Carefree Delight in its new home. You really can't tell were Carefree Delight ends and the rose next to it begins. You could tell better yesterday as the blooms were easily seen on Carefree Delight but today the bloom clusters are sagging and the flowers are shattered so its difficult to make out which is the rose I am referring to just from the picture.

It did rain late afternoon again today, maybe 6 PM or so. Good for all my transplants even if I did already water.

Rita - wow! I have some roses/plants that I would like to move but haven't had the courage - or energy! - to do so. Some of my plantings have been a bit haphazard and I'm trying to color coordinate stuff better. Or sometimes you just change your mind!

I did dig a Sunsprite (it was actually intended to be an SP job) and then, because it had some blooms on it, felt bad and stuck it somewhere else.........and it is coming back quite nicely!

Rained again all night but it cleared up now. Very good for my moved plants.

I am the queen of moving things around. This spring I didn't move any roses but the past few years 20 or more each spring. Not only roses but I also move around my daylilies if I don't like the placing. This however, is the largest thing I have ever had moved and had to have the guys do it. Usually I just dig up and move my normal sized roses myself but this would have been impossible.

It helps that we have yet to get hot around here and have rain, rain and more rain this year here in the Northest. I know its too hot down there in Texas to do any moving of plants now.

How did you move such big plants? Usually the experts recommend moving roses only when they are dormant. Is it ok to move them when they are in full bloom?

The reason I ask is as I have a few which are really struggling in a spot and I am really thinking of moving them but wondering if I should do it now or wait till next year.

Also is there any specific method you use to dig them and replant?

I had three strong young men dig out the rose with a big rootball, bag it in burlap, dig hole in new spot, carry it there (and I tell you they were not having an easy time lifting it) and replant. Same for the second big one but it was not as big as the first so was easier to do.

I have moved smaller normal sized roses at variuos times in the year. Last year I moved a bunch of roses in August. They sure did look really sorry for awhile but by late fall had all bounced back. I try to move them early spring but I didn't get to this project until now. The normal size roses I just move myself. These two were too big for me obviously and I had two shrubs to move to put two other roses in the planter were the shrubs were. I could easily have dug up those two myself but because the two sent into a planter were it was very difficult to work and very deep hole needed, I had to have them plant them. It took three people as a person had to hold each rose and someone else had to backfill the planting hole.

I will loose all the bloom that I would have had all summer on the big ones. But I couldn't wait till fall because I ordered roses already to plant in the garden section these two monsters came out of. I will be able to do a grouping of floribunda types in the old spot.

Usually my rose moving projects are not as complicated as this!

And here is the bigger empty spot were both Carefree Delight and the Gift used to be in my sideyard. They came even further out from those landscape blocks just put there now. You can see the dirt areas were things were dug up.

And thats it for the big rose moving project the other day. But I plan to move more roses.

The bigger projects of the needed moves are my approx 5 foot tall Bonica shrub rose that is going to go in the third of the planter boxes in the front yard. That would be directly in back of the two Charles Aznavour roses there now.

The next thing planned is to move my two Flower Carpet Appleblossom Roses, one into the back yard and the other repositioned from were it is now. They are not very tall but they spread out alot. The big deal will be tying them up and then lifting the spreading canes so they they can be dug because as they are now, you could not put a shovel thru them.

I plan to plant some of the new floribundas and small growing shrub type roses in there from my orders that I went crazy buying new roses.

So far its rained again most nights, which is good. I have also watered them even if it rained because I know they need all the water they can get.

Still thinking on what the finial plan will be for the empty space that the big shubs came out of. After I spaced it out, it just didn't seem to me that it should be all roses. So I am working on a plan.

Here is the area left over after the roses came out after I fixed the line of pavers to define the edge of path and garden space. Pay no attention to the ones in the middle, they are not staying there, Just there to outline the space I have to work with.

I am going to put some of my polyanthas in there frontish middle as a focal point and then see what I want to plant around them. No more big shrub roses for that area for me.
