B4 I switch to Flickr, TESTing

I'm considering moving all my pix from Photobucket to Flickr. Trying out posting a pic. Not sure I want to download & then upload a gazillion pix. (Unless someone knows an easy way to do it~please enlighten me!)

Hey, while I'm at it...if ANYONE ever finds an Aloe (hemmingii) like this one, with really BIG teeth...please let me know...or buy it for me (I'll reimburse)!! :D I no longer have it. :(

Can you tell me if you can click either of these to go to larger pix?

Thanks, Richard. That helps. Tells me I have to make the pic public for others to see. I'll go change & come back to say I have in a minute. Then maybe someone else would like to try it.

I have found an opportunity here to learn about soil chemistry and plants requirements. The concept of "buffer" as mentioned by idaho-gardner is very interesting as applied to soil chemistry. I got into serious gardening within past three seasons. Started from GA red clay, with lots of redish rocks, stones. I got into internet and learned about ways to amend that red clay. I did all that very hard work, without buying any topsoil or compost from anywhere. I was told that I have to pay attention to soil PH.(potential Hydrogen), which I was familiar with from college chemistry. Then I checked the soil; PH was around 5.4. I was told (internet , info from PH meter manufacturers) That it was too low unless I wanted to grow just potatoes. WHAT TO DO?? "lime"! so I kept adding lime , but then I was told that it will take a year or so for that to work and bring that PH up. I also kep pouring lots of wood ash from my fireplace.... but despit all that low PH I managed to grow decent tomatoes, onions, squash, cucumbers, and all kinds of herbs. Now, the soil PH in my garden is probably around 6.2. I did fine with PH=5.4 so I sould not worry about it. Some fellow gardener here in GW warned me "be careful, not to add too much wood ash it can raise the PH..". I was just getting scared right there (LOL). But right now, WHO CARESS about PH! forget all about it and unlearn what you have learned. I am so relaxed now, not worrying abou this and that thechnical and scientific jargons. I'll see if I can strike through all the information in that last message that might apply in Canada but does not pertain to Florida turf. The information you have received has been good but I have to tell you a bit more. Going from a chemical dependent lawn to a healthy organic lawn takes time and work. But it is worth it. The chemicals and pesticides have killed the microbile life in the soil. It takes time to fix this. After looking at your lawn, I see your excess watering has created mold. Use a hard rake and rake everything off the dirt.Before you seed or sod go to a Organic shop and get some products and apply as directed. I would use some liquid seaweed, alfalfa and OM Booster. Don't use corn gluten if you are using seed as it stops seed germination. If using sod, don't let it dry out for the first week. But don't drown it either. Then water once a week, in the early morning for about 1 hour. Fertilize every 5 to 6 weeks with a quality fertilizer. Make sure NO urea or sewage or manure in fertilizer.I have a friend doing Organic in TN. If you need to know which products to use in the USA I can find out for you. Mow the lawn on a routine. Once every 7 days in the early morning or evening, never during the hot part of the day. Don't cut it short, never less than a 1.5 inches for the type of grass you are using. We use Kentucky bluegrass up here and it should be 2.5 inches long. Never cut more than 1/3 of the lenghth when you cut or the lawn may go into shock. When going from a chemical lawn to Organic, you won't see the best results until the 3rd year. The 1st year can look bad and the 2nd will be ok. If you use sod and after its been down for a couple days take a light roller and roll it to get the roots in contact with the soil.If you can do a soil test, its good to know the Ph. But you need to rake out all the moss and loose grass.I would take it back to bare soil.Good Luck Most of it does not apply because you won't be seeding. Most of the rest does not apply because you don't have mold. He almost got the part about the roller correct. Rolling needs to be done no later than immediately when you apply the sod, if you are going to apply sod. With St Aug you really don't have to unless you want to change the variety. When I converted from chemical to organic, it looked incredibly good in 3 weeks. It has never looked poorly since. My soil is mostly sand fill that I had brought in, so it is a lot like what you will encounter. I suppose it is possible it might take longer to see great results but I would start looking immediately.

I really don't know why I didn't think of this earlier... about storing all member photos on the FKB server. I guess I figured it out be outrageously expensive to host all the photos. But the cost of storage has gone down tremendously (an extra 20GB on picasaweb costs only $5 per year), and I am making small change from the ads on the FKB. So it's definitely do-able. I replied back to gellchom with a message similar to this. Please feel free to mention this when you send out your emails (although it's probably too late for most of you). Sample email: There are a couple of options for getting your photos back onto the FKB. Option#1: Upload your kitchen photos to one of the online photo management applications (photobucket, flickr, picasa, etc.). Remove password-protection from your kitchen album or members will not be able to view your photos. Email the link to me. (Many members choose this option because they like managing their own photos.) Option#2: Email all your kitchen photos directly to starpooh and she will upload them onto the FKB's photo album. Her email address is: starpooh@gmail.com. They will be put into a separate folder (similar to outwest's kitchen): http://picasaweb.google.com/starpooh. If, in the future, you decide to remove your photos from the FKB just send an email to starpooh and she will take care of it. (Some members are choosing this option because they don't want to worry about keeping track of their kitchen photos. They also do not need to worry about password-protecting their personal photos.)

In my opinion soil tests are an expense you can do without unless you are having problems. Having said that, one person's problem is another person's success story. For example your problem might be that your neighbor always wins yard of the month and your lawn always comes in second. Then you might want to get a better soil test (from Logan Labs in Ohio) and let morpheuspa give you his opinion on how to tune it up. About all we know from yours is you don't need to add lime...EVER. As for "trying to go organic," just do it. There's no "trying" if you just stop using chemicals and use organic fertilizers and organic solutions to insects, weeds, and disease. With a Palmetto St Aug you should never see another weed. Mow at your mower's highest setting, or, since Palmetto is a dwarf variety, one notch below the highest setting. Then water deeply and infrequently. Deeply means one full inch all at one time. Infrequently means monthly this time of year shortening the frequency until you are watering once per week in late June, July and August. If you try to water more frequently than the grass needs it, then you are just encouraging weed seeds to sprout. I have been organic since 2002 with my St Augustine lawn(s). I have a house in San Antonio, one in George West (for sale if you want to move there) and in Bandera, Texas. I just moved to Bandera and the lawn was about 1% St Augustine. The current plan is to encourage only the St Aug and to let it cover to fill the rest. With perfect weather that would take two seasons. We'll see what happens. Back in 2002 the light bulb went on for me concerning organics. I realized that the ingredients in the best commercial brands were simply animal feed like soybean meal, alfalfa, corn, animal byproducts (feather meal), and other ground up nuts, beans, and seeds. When you buy animal feed at a feed store, you save about 80% of the cost of commercially bagged organic fertilizer. I started using only ground corn meal to fertilize. For years I was applying at 10 pounds per 1,000 square feet. At first it worked well, but later the grass began to thin. For whatever reason I doubled the amount and everything was good again. I was starving the soil microbes at 10 pounds per 1,000. Then the Chinese started buying our corn and the price went way up. Then (about 2011) I switched to alfalfa pellets. Those things are great at 20 pounds per 1,000. Speaking of microbes, those are the guys you are feeding with organic fertilizer. You can forget about nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. What you want to focus on is protein. Carbohydrates are the carrier, but protein is what you're after. And it has to be available to the microbes. Feather meal is not immediately available like the ground grains. Feathers take forever to decompose and don't make a great fertilizer. Get to know the protein content of the grains you have available at your local feed store and buy what...

Good to know, Kathi. The top banner has to be public...photo of my dog, Woody used for that ~so all can see. The Christmas lights were public, but I have since changed them to private, so no one should be able to see those anymore.

Puzzle to me now...as if you really want to know...is why all can see both sets of pix! I copied the Aloe pix & put in a different "set" & made that one public. The 1st Aloe pix are in a set that is private. Colleen, you are my "friend" on Flickr, but I haven't set any pix for others to see just yet...besides these last Aloe & the dog pic.

Hmmm. More head-scratching!

Good pics too, on your Flicker page even better in crisp and clear for this Mozzilla browser both worked for both of your test post.

Critique: for those who cant but still try to encourage others to do betterNot a big fan of printed info for copy rights in the view of the main focused item but copyright is what it is.
Great pics..... nice pod or tripod you have there too ?

Works well for me, I like it. I have a Flickr account, but use Picasa mainly, don't know why that is not too popular on the forums. Never bothered with Photobucket.

I'm guessing now...that once you make particular pix viewable to the public, then they are public no matter what album they are in. Doesn't seem right, but maybe I'll figure out something else later.

Thanks, Wes. Glad the pix are crisp. I don't like having the writing on the pix either, but have been forced in that direction (by this site's owners- TOS) & folks who have decided they can lift my pix without asking. Just trying to make it a tad more difficult to remove my name. I'm sure there are ways around it. At least I don't put name right across the middle, like proofs. Not sure what you mean about a tripod (do you see one?)...but no, I don't use one (should, but haven't gotten there yet).

Each online site has its pros & cons. I started with Photobucket...no, I take that back. I started with Photopoint! Anyone recall using that one? It went bankrupt (right after collecting my membership fee)! I paid WAY too much moola to get 16 CDs of pix back from the company that took over (Sony ImageStation??)! That was back when you had to scan all your pix into your computer! Sorry, I digress!

Karen, not sure if it matters about Photobucket or Yahoo. I think those & Google are interconnected now. At least, with Flickr, I know I have to make the pic viewable by the public to be seen here by all, regardless of belonging to any particular online photo-hosting site. Thanks on the Aloe!

Howard, I was thinking how to eliminate yearly fees I pay. Flickr offered a terabyte of space free, with higher resolution. I think I just figured out it won't make much difference to me having a free acct with Photobucket, so I will probably keep it. I don't upload high res pix there anyway. Will have 2GB of space free (have 22GB now that I don't use). All this exercise to figure out I need do NOTHING! Ha! I like to be able to do batch thumbnails from PB. Not sure that is available at any others. I was concerned about privacy issues.
I still believe people can get your pix from Flickr via Google. At the site they can't, but there are other ways. I have found my pix on the web, on other peep's sites/blogs. Not nice!

I know what you mean about people lifting our pictures.Had that happen to me once that I know of ,of one of the pictures I posted of my epiphylium(sp) that was so loaded with blooms.

I was looking on an epi site one day for other colors and lo and behold there was my pic.I knew it was mine as it was setting in front of a bunch of cinder blocks when the neighbor and we were making the wall between our houses.

I take it as a compliment from a non creative somewhat morally weak desperate short cutting type of person. I enjoy taking pictures and if people lift it for their own purposes, my life is too busy to get hung up on it and man can I take more pictures. I used to feel somewhat violated and pissed off but go for it, If you want to lift my pictures. I know one lady took one of my floral scans and did a 8' painting of it and Another lady is using another picture for a painting. I am still a little miffed about that. Because I guess they are misrepresenting my vision as theirs. An artist should have their own vision.

I suppose it could be taken as a compliment (or flattery, as someone once suggested). I would like to be asked permission or at least given credit. If it is for personal use (storing for help in identifying down the road, I'm okay with that), much better than them profiting by it. But once a person decides to post online for others to see, that's a different matter. I am, by no means, a pro photographer, but I have sold photos in the past. I have been asked, on occasion, if my photos could be used as wallpaper (on their personal laptop/computer). Whole point is..."with permission". It's a courtesy.

I feel for you, Kathi. That is just the type of situation I am talking about.

Mara, I'd be miffed too. I am an artist...and yes, those people misrepresented your art as theirs! Exactly!

Okay~let's just say it irks me. I try to take steps to ensure/not let myself get all riled up! :P

I viewed your picture and left clicked it. It gave me a choice of sizes. I picked out the largest one and it got bigger in the Flicker site. I think it was Medium 640 from Medium 500.

No, Rina. I've had the Flickr account since 2005. It was fun messing with it. If I ever need to load high resolution pix to post somewhere, that'll be the place to go. I don't like having to make the album/pix public in order to post here.

For my purposes, keeping the pix at Photobucket worked out better for me. I can still get links for a whole slew of thumbnails to post. At Flickr, could only do one at a time. Well, to be honest, I didn't go to the forums there to ask & find out. Call me Lazy...or Busy!

I can switch to a free acct at Photobucket when my paid one is up. I don't use more than is allotted for a free acct. I didn't think moving 500+ albums was warranted. Not moving, doesn't break a bunch of links to stuff already used.

So, still a posting fool...with pix!
