Well 5 miles inland it's been warm enough. Highs and lows have been very close to historical averages. This has been a more normal summer seems to me. Hopefully that means we'll get some raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiinnnn this winter.

It's been hot inland at least for me. Had about 10 days straight of 98+ and a few things wilted but water usage about the same as last year.
Later this week to be cooler than normal for a day or 2.
But I have to agree with hoovb it's been normal somewhat just the 10 day wasn't normal.

It's been close to historical norms hear in Temecula.

When we lived four miles from the ocean in the Monterey bay area we often had summer days with no sun at all. Fine for growing lettuce and strawberries. Here if the sun appears at the normal time we get a HOT afternoon. This year we have many days with fog until ten am. We love it as the afternoon will not get over eighty. Just like spring we can leave all the doors open and enjoy the fresh air. Al

It's been a normal summer here but it feels a lot hotter because I chopped down my mulberry tree. Can't wait for my new trees to get big enough to provide shade

I live about 18 miles inland from the ocean in north Orange County and it has been hotter than usual for the past three weeks. Hits high 80s or low 90s almost everyday. Whats, worse, it doesn't cool down to the low to mid 60at night like it usually does most years.

The weather may be a downer for beach-goers, but my plants seem to be happier than if it were sizzling.

I just think it was hotter the past few years at my place and this feels more like a normal summer at my place (a few miles inland in Torrance). With these water restrictions I would be losing plants if we had a severe heat wave, although I still expect Sept to get warmer.

I'm sort of OK with the weather this year.

I actually really like the foggy morning/sunny afternoon weather. With water restrictions for me this summer, the fog is welcome and keeping even my drought tolerant plants from keeling over.

You know, it's been a relief and a nice saving of water to have the fog every morning. Although now it's trapping the smoke under it from the fire in N. Ca. Not fun to breathe.

I guess they can't agree on who said, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in California." :)

It has been warmer then normal here with less fog then usual. My tomatoes did great this year and last. But that is why we are having so many fires the last two years.

I think it depends on how you define "coastal".

I'm in the South Bay and I'm pretty sure we've had more than the normal number of heat waves this year--I believe there have been 5 periods that included a day of 95+. Actually the first heat wave was in April. HOWEVER, the days in between have been below average, I think.

Of course the heat waves often affect areas that are just a few miles from the Bay, such as San Jose, and spare cities in the inner Bay. However I seem to remember that even San Francisco was hit pretty hard by the April heat.

A quick count for San Jose: June-Aug.24th (ignores 90+ days in April and May)

60s and 70s: 60%
80s: 25%
90s: 15%

Last year was bad for heat waves as well.

Places like Oakland and San Francisco--and for that matter the Central Valley and Southern California--may not experience our heatwaves. But sometimes they do. California weather is complicated.
