I'm getting a darn nectarine this year! (pic)

I built a cage for my nectarines. The prototype is a bit too long, but I think I may get to eat four nectarines this year.

I thought you might like a photo of Lloyd Bridges, one of Mike's people. He wrests mealworms out of Mike's fingers and then does a few push-ups to show him a thing or two.{{gwi:542858}}

Congrats on the nectarines, Renee! I may have to look into growing irises now - are they difficult to grow? They are lovely. :)

I'm guessing the cage is to protect the fruit from animals but the ones outside the cage look good as well. Am I right?

I lost about half my Apricots due to birds this year. I will do more netting next year. I did save my blueberries and boysenberries this year by netting my garden area and will net my tomatoes and grapes as they get ripe.

haha I have a lot of lizards that don't seem too scared of my presence but I haven't tried to feed them. I just let them eat ants and try to keep my dogs from killing them.

I've had some terrible springs with PLC on this tree plus my two Babcock Peach trees. I finally found the right combination of dormant spray that has really helped. Daconil sprayed around New Years and again around Valentine's Day has done a good job. I'm now on the lookout for Brown Rot, which usually hits right around harvest time. I'll spray with Monterey Fungi Fighters at the first sign.

I've been waiting for someone with nectarine experience to answer because I'm interested too, but I'll hazard a thought. Although many, if not most, people grow stone fruits in a vase it is also entirely possible to do a central leader. The closer tree looks like it is headed that way now, but either of them could be done either way. If you want a vase I'd head back the leader to about waist high and select your scaffold branches, removing all the others. As late in the season as it is I would probably leave it until winter but I think it'd be OK to do it now. Best check with somebody who knows, though, as I stand ready to be corrected! :-)M

Hi Mike, OK, Im glad I understood its the red one. Something right! Whoo To Mike, buyorsell888, and calamity_j, The kitties are totally stressed out right now, but I think they'll be OK. The one black cat seen in the pix above, had some teeth pulled, but he seemed almost fine the next day. His brother on the other hand - totally freaked out. The anesthesia didn't wear off, he was scared, and probably in pain all night, so I stayed up with him. Ever since, he's been sleeping in kitchen nightly, which is unusual for him. (The outside boys aren't allowed in any further than the kitchen - long story). The girls indoors - well the one with recurring cancer is acting very needy and wanted to be close *all the time* *every minute of the day*. I cant blame her, shes stressed. Shes had a several surgeries and doesnt like the vet much at all As you can imagine. The other girl had to have some tests, but after a few days, we found they all turned out all right. Shes still feeling a bit crabby with us about having been taken to, The Awful Place. (She holds a grudge, as many of you with kitties will probably know what I mean!) Thanks for asking and well wishing. :) Even though the girls are in their senior years now, theyre like my babies and I stop everything when they are ill. Its so hard that they are getting old! As to the pond, our plan is like something out of a slapstick movie, though we are hoping it might work anyway. Were going to hook up the hose, as Mike suggests, and weve got a tarp weve put a slit in and will place the fountain through, then duct tape, so that any runoff from inside the pipes and fountain gets funneled over the tarp and out to the trees not into the somewhat clean pond water. Its about 105-110 degrees out there today and neither of us are looking forward to working on it!

Arghh... I am all ready getting behind on my posting and my planting. I have potted up some plants already. Probally could of gone if hardend. My tomatoes seedling are strong and will be ready when the weather really breaks. The boxes are done and will post pics in the next couple of days.

garden is beautiful. Also love those "Lizzies" they do eat the bugs and bad things.

Yeah, I didn't have enough time to make more nectarine cages, so I'll have to sacrifice most of them to the rodents. I have the tree netted as well, but the rats just use the netting like it's mountain climbing rigging. My neighbors have never eaten a single apricot from their tree. Rodents get them all.

Irises are the easiest things to grow. Be sure to buy reblooming varieties from a reputable grower if you want more than a few weeks of bloom, though.

Renee, I feel your (rat) pain, sigh... Last year I had about 30 or 40 apples on my little espaliered Anna. I did not get single one due to the roof rats and ground squirrels (it's the low rent district on the other side of my fence in the abandoned orange orchard for both ground squirrels and rats). Many of my citrus fruits were also damaged. I have finally had to resort to setting up poison bait stations. I am happy so say I've gotten 10 apples off my new Anna, and look to get those 30 or 40 apples all for myself! If you're not willing to get rid of the rodents by poisoning, have you tried bagging your fruit? I know those very clever wire cages will work for SURE, but maybe a cloth bag, which is easier to put on, might also work? I know a lot of folks use the Packco cotton bags for codling moth with apples, and some are using them on stone fruit to keep them away from rodents and birds. I added the link below.
