Selling plants for greyhound adoption kennel

I'll be taking a variety of plants to sell at the open house at Project Racing Home (PRH) on Saturday, May 17th from noon until 4:00pm. All of my profits will be donated to this greyhound adoption kennel.

PRH is located south of Greensboro just off Hwy220, exit on Hwy 62. If you take the 62 exit from Greensboro, turn right on Hwy 62, turn right on Faulkner Road, the kennel is the first place on the right. Very easy.

There will be food and other things for sale at this event. If you've never met a greyhound, you're in for a real treat. They are sweethearts. There are quite a few up for adoption right now, too.

We adopted our Won By Her Wits or "Charm" at PRH almost five years ago. Charm will be with my husband and I at the open house. We'd love to meet some Carolina Gardeners.

You must know my friend Phyllis Nunn. She is big in the local greyhound rescue scene. The key to finding homes for greyhounds is to let people pet them. No other dog has that silky coat - just a pleasure to touch - they feel like satin.

John, sorry I don't know Phyllis. The greyhounds love to "meet and greet" people. They are often holding greyhound adoption meets at the local PetSmart stores, outside Pannera in different locations and sometimes at Lake Crabtree for get togethers.

I could go on and on about how wonderful they are as house dogs. They are very different from other breeds. The short hair and lack of body fat makes for a clean, nice smelling dog! LOL

Our Charm doesn't bark at anything. She only barks in excitement when we're playing. They run 41+ mph, so you can't let them off leash unless you're in a controlled space. The rest of the time, they love to just nap, nap, nap. Very huggable, big dogs.

Edna -- Greyhounds are just wonderful house dogs! Because they race everyone thinks that they are high energy. They actually like to sleep about 20 hours a day on a big, soft dog bed. Charm doesn't jump (her kennel was a lower one, so she never learned) on furniture after owning her for 5 years. Others that had top kennel cages will jump on furniture. They run about 41+ mph for 31 seconds! They are sprinters, not endurance dogs. Very little shedding and no body fat means that they don't smell bad. I have to brush her teeth everyday as they do have bad teeth from being fed poorly on the track. The brushing keeps their teeth from decaying and therefore, keeps away doggy breath. They are not aggressive by nature. Some of them will chase small animals (as in chasing the mechanical rabbit at the track). The rescue kennel will "cat test" them to let the owners know whether or not they are safe around a cat. Charm does NOT have a high prey drive and is safe around small animals. Our cockatiels can fly around the house around her and she leaves them alone. Greyhounds have very sweet souls. They make eye contact with you and learn to read you like a book. They KNOW everything that you're doing and figure out what you say, too. Their whole world revolves around their owners. Charm has learned such a big vocabulary that we have to spell all the time as she listens for cues about what we're going to do FOR HER! LOL We play "20 questions" with her to figure out what she wants. When we ask the right thing, she barks. The only time she barks is when we ask her questions or when she's playing with us. She NEVER barks at any noise, person, or animal. Charm raced for 4 years (maximum age) because she was a winner. Losers are retired much sooner. At the time we adopted her, there were 50,000+ greyhounds euthanized after their racing careers had ended. Adopting one is really saving a life. Okay, I could go on and on and on about greyhounds. Well, if there is a female left then I would be more interested in the female. My male shepherd, even after being fixed, pees on EVERYTHING!! My plants, our cars, even the neigbor's leg!! I love hime but that's the only reason I don't want another male. Susie, I don't know the dates yet that I will be there but definitely at least for Christmas weekend. I just talked to my mom who said she can't do much driving to go get a dog but if you do happen to go meet up with Tina and Maryanne, maybe you could pick up one for me and I could pick it up from you in Michigan? I know that's alot to ask...but it's a thought. If it's too much trouble, I TOTALLY and COMPLETELY understand! Where are you in Michigan again? My parents live in Linden. Theresa

joepyeweed My second post was to clarify having possibly mislead readers of my first post into thinking the house or the entry were unhealty. Yes, they have messed on the carpet, the messes were cleaned up and the carpets cleaned, but stains occur and odors begin to linger with repetition. By trashed I meant more that the walls I painted and doors I installed are getting scratched up. Yes the door between the entry and house proper has to be deadbolted or they will mouth the knob and gain entry to the home; if the cats were visible the chase would be on. Yea, I can smell the dogs, they are three large hairy animals, have dog breath and produce an odor; to me it is offensive, but I have accute olfactory sensitivity it may not be offensive to someone else or to MIL. My concerns were more for the tension and concern (I feel when I am in charge) of the dogs shredding the cats; I will not step between them. Period. Dog bites me in pursuit of the cats and I will put it down on the spot; that's blunt and perhaps cold but not up for debate. My original intent in posing the question was to get feedback as to whether other animal folks felt this was a good environment for these Greyhounds; in a smallish but largely tidy house with cats where they must be sequestered to one room to keep them away from the cats. I do not think it is, but perhaps when one considers that they come from living in a tiny kennel at a race track, where they are may in fact be utopia to them. She showers them with love, feeds them, walks them, cares for them, takes them to the vet regularly but I still don't think animals bred to chase small animals should live under the same roof with small animals if they show the slightest inclination toward wanting to kill them. This will be the last I write on this. I appreciate the input from objective third parties, it reaffirmed my position and I have withdrawn myself from the situation with finality and wash my hands of a situation I feel is an accident waiting to happen and won't allow my children to be there anymore. I could not live with myself if my 4 year old daughter opened the door to the hounds and found herself between them and the cats. I feel as though I am beating a dead horse at this point.

They had a sweet greyhound pup up for adoption on Fox 8 news this morning. He had a bad back so was retired early. Still had his puppy hair. What a cutie!

Project Racing Home Celebrates Placing Over 700 Retired Greyhounds for Adoption at its Five Year Anniversary

Randleman, N.C., May 6, 2008 Â Project Racing Home was started five years ago as a retirement facility and adoption organization working to place retired racing greyhounds into loving homes. Since its inception, theyÂve placed over 700 greyhounds through their adoption process.

To mark this achievement, Project Racing Home (PRH) will host a five-year anniversary celebration on May 17, 2008 at their facility at 7015 Faulkner Road in Randleman.

From 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. animal lovers of all ages are invited to the festivities which will include food, raffles, giveaways, demonstration by local K-9 units and live entertainment, courtesy of Martha and the Moodswingers.

A new play and exercise lot will also be dedicated during the celebration.

A non-profit organization, the six-acre facility relies on donations and funding from supporters and assistance from volunteers.

"WeÂre very proud of all our supporters and volunteers who have contributed to the success of this facility." said Kimberly Jewell, director. "The ongoing support from the community is what makes this such a worthwhile endeavor."

Additionally, PRH has invited other local rescue groups to participate in the anniversary celebration and help promote spay and neuter programs and general animal welfare throughout the community.

The kennel will be open for tours and all available greyhounds for adoption will be ready to find their new families during the event.
