I have done plant sales from both sides of the table, can't help much with what plants will sell for you, would probably be different from what goes up here. Here's a couple of tips on what works for us.

Everything properly labeled.

Things in flower sell out quickly.

Have a Connoisseur's section with sign advertising same, anything that's a little special, rare or just hard to find. These usually bring in a few more dollars.

Don't put it all out at once, if there are only one or two of whatever they seemed to get snapped up quickly, replace as they are sold.

A nice variety of plants is better than flats of the same thing.

Charm will be with us, as will many of the other adopted greyhounds. We owners will talk about what wonderful pets they are at every opportunity. This helps with adopting out those in the kennel.

I would be of no assistance in a cause such as yours. I would be more interested in loving the dogs instead of selling plants.

I'm also a foster failure *sigh* I would end up keeping my fosters. DH won't allow me to foster anymore.

We have a greyhound rescue that comes to Nordstroms every weekend for adoptions. They are gorgeous, just gorgeous dogs and their fur is soooo soft.

Greyhounds are just wonderful house dogs! Because they race everyone thinks that they are high energy. They actually like to sleep about 20 hours a day on a big, soft dog bed. Charm doesn't jump (her kennel was a lower one, so she never learned) on furniture after owning her for 5 years. Others that had top kennel cages will jump on furniture. They run about 41+ mph for 31 seconds! They are sprinters, not endurance dogs. Very little shedding and no body fat means that they don't smell bad. I have to brush her teeth everyday as they do have bad teeth from being fed poorly on the track. The brushing keeps their teeth from decaying and therefore, keeps away doggy breath.

They are not aggressive by nature. Some of them will chase small animals (as in chasing the mechanical rabbit at the track). The rescue kennel will "cat test" them to let the owners know whether or not they are safe around a cat. Charm does NOT have a high prey drive and is safe around small animals. Our cockatiels can fly around the house around her and she leaves them alone.

Greyhounds have very sweet souls. They make eye contact with you and learn to read you like a book. They KNOW everything that you're doing and figure out what you say, too. Their whole world revolves around their owners. Charm has learned such a big vocabulary that we have to spell all the time as she listens for cues about what we're going to do FOR HER! LOL We play "20 questions" with her to figure out what she wants. When we ask the right thing, she barks. The only time she barks is when we ask her questions or when she's playing with us. She NEVER barks at any noise, person, or animal.

Charm raced for 4 years (maximum age) because she was a winner. Losers are retired much sooner. At the time we adopted her, there were 50,000+ greyhounds euthanized after their racing careers had ended. Adopting one is really saving a life.

Okay, I could go on and on and on about greyhounds. They're very special.

The only times I have done this were at a yard sale, and for the local hort. society. The hort. people were very efficient at labelling everything, and had lots of people around to answer questions. When I did it at a yard sale, I used pics of the flowers in bloom as enticement - most people have no imagination and need them.

Did I mention that greyhounds are perfect in the garden -- no digging, no lounging on the plants. Charm tip toes through the flowers without stepping on anything.

BTW, she says her face is grey because we rubbed all the color off by petting her so much! LOL

If you guys are in the drought zone, probably food. Tomatoes, peppers, and annuals or perennials only in flower now. Nothing out of flower, no unusual annuals. Herbs like rosemary, and basil. Hens are chicks are selling like hot cakes here this year too.

4" are easiest to carry. I get boxtops to use as flats. Trader Joe's, a pet food store (they give bottoms) or a liquor store can give you oodles of box tops.

These are plants we happen to be selling the most of at the nursery right now.

Best of luck raising money for your worthy event Cameron. I read about the appalling conditions Greyhounds frequently endure. You're doing a good thing.

Here's my suggestion: Make sure to let folks know they are supporting a charity and to save their receipts for their taxes. Nothing opens up my wallet faster for impulse purchases than to know I'm also doing a good deed.

I'll be donating 100% of the profit to the greyhounds. My expenses are the wholesale plant price and the table/tent rental. I'm not charging anything for my time or gasoline.

GGG -- good ideas! I can't get tomatoes, but I can take herbs (basil, rosemary, thyme, lavender, fennel) and plants in bloom. I also appreciate the source for box lids since I shop TJ's every week.

Are Profusion Zinnias unusual annuals? I see those in a lot of the gardening magazines and I can get all the colors.

I can also get the 2008 hosta of the year -- Blue Mouse Ears. It's pricey, though.

Do you think peonies, clematis and hellebores are too special?

Profusion zinnias are zinnias. They aren't unusual and people will love them. The brighter and more dazzling the color, the more you will sell.
Bright coleus sell like hotcakes too.

Given the limited amount of time for sales, I've decided to carry three pre-set groupings. I'll take 12 of the full sun and herb garden and 18 of the container grouping. In the last hour, I'll sell any unsold plants separately.

I looked through my Fine Gardening "Plant Combinations" and "Container Plantings" to get color schemes and plants that are available from my provider and won't be too expensive.

1 full sun (yellow, blue, orange) vignette of rudbeckia, veronica and orange profusion zinna.

1 herb garden -- rosemary arp, sage Bergarten, sweet basil, curley parsley, English thyme

1 container vignette of melampodium million gold as the thriller, phlox instensia lavender as the spiller, and plectranthus troys gold as the filler.
