agaves under trees? other suggestions?

Hi all,

(crossposted in cacti forums)

I am planting up the street next to my house. All squared away with the city for approvals. One issue remains.

The planting side broders train tracks. I plant to plant tough, evergreen trees as a visual barrier, and hope to build a sound wall behind the trees as a noise barrier too (I'm getting grants)

In order to prevent homeless encampments on the street side, I'll be placing boulders, and planting spiky agaves, cacti and yuccas along the treeline.

This is a full sun, hot, dry area, so the plantings must be very drought tolerant.

My concern is leaf litter getting into the agaves and messing them up. Even with evergreen trees this will be an issue.

Have you planted agaves etc under trees, and how did it turn out? Do you have other suggestions to this problem? I could just plant yuccas instead of trees I suppose, btu I'd like to provide some trees as shade - plus they'll screen noise faster than yuccas.

thanks
