How to heal abrasion on avocado tree trunk?

I grew an avocado tree from seed, it is now a 7' tall sapling. The originally-correct size stake has caused an abrasion to the soft trunk of the sapling and I have replaced it with a taller one. I have covered the brown abrasion with aloevera and covered it with paper, but I'm not sure if that's the best way to heal the abrasion. Any suggestions from my fellow gardners?

The best way to deal with any tree boo-boo is to clean the wound (removing torn, frayed, bark and tissue) and leave it open to the air. Aloe vera and paper won't help.

May I assume that your sapling is in a pot indoors?

Those stakes that are driven in next to the trunk of a young tree should be removed and if a stake is needed it should be a foot or two from the tree with a strap to the trunk to provide the support. Any stake should allow movement of the trunk as long as there is no movement of the root in the soil. If trunk movement is eliminated the trunk will not increase in caliber size and strenght as it should. Al

Your planting job looks fine. The main thing is to try to avoid soil or mulch covering the trunk over the root crown. This is what I was always taught. Although my Trinidadian neighbors stack composted horse manure several inches above the root crown and seem to not have any problem. The other thing that people very often get wrong is not fully watering in the rootball. They plant it but allow a pocket of air to exist under ground. Once the soil is well watered in around the root ball, the watering of the plant deeply becomes the main issue. The surface material will very often not allow the water to reach the rootball. I reccommend allowing a hose to do some drip irrigation directly over the rootball at least a couple of times a week for the first month. Also, don't be tempted to fertilize immediately. Wait until the plant is established for at least 60-90 days before considering a time released light fertilization. Harry

Hi Blackolive, Sorry to say your lillypilly sounds like it may become a widowmaker, without getting an ultrasound examination of the trunk and major branches, the tree will always have that unknown dangers of collape of the tree at any time. The parts of the tree that are dead or dying are left open to attack by white ants, borers, disease, rot etc,will be hanging there just waiting for an opportunity to fail and the tree to collapse at some un oppertune time in the future, possible with someone climing the tree or sitting near the tree and being injured by the tree falling. IF IN DOUBT CUT IT OUT ???? Please be saftey minded of yourself and others that may use the area around the tree. A ticking time bomb possibly. You can always get a new tree, but if it falls on some one or something, maybe abit harder to replace. Good luck Peter r

Looks like fungus or disease attacked the branch starting at the wound hole. In the best case it might be possible to save the branch if the cracked bark/dead area is removed along with any soft/decayed wood. Then you could regularly paint on liquid copper fungicide (including under the sides of the rod and on the other side of the rod) until the tree grows around from each side and closes its wound. It would take several years however and no guarantees of full recovery. The next best case you would have to add a wood post to support that corner of the tree house and cut that one branch off below any bit of dead area to prevent disease from reaching the trunk, then regularly paint on liquid copper fungicide until the cut branch closes up the wound over a few years. The worst case is if the tree is deeply infected with any bad disease at that branch, it could spread all the way down to the trunk eventually and kill the whole tree over several years.

I grew the avocado sapling from a seed and planted it outdoors in a sunny location that gets windy in the afternoon. I followed your advice and removed the paper, but the abrasion is on a narrow, fragile trunk, 1" maybe 1"1/2 diameter, and if I scrape it I'm afraid I may damage the trunk for good. I wonder if the fragility of this sapling is because it's from a seed rather than a graft.
