How to treat a severely sunburned avocado trunk

Cody Simms

Hi -- I'm a relatively new avocado grower. I have a Hass tree that's now about 6 feet tall. I bought it as a box tree earlier this spring. It's on a hillside facing west in the San Fernando Valley in LA so it got absolutely blasted in the recent heatwave this summer...multiple days above 110 degrees in all day full sun. I did not paint the trunk white...and this week I looked at the southwest side of the trunk (which I hadn't seen in awhile since it is on the downhill side of a steep slope) and it was severely black for a stretch of about an inch wide and a foot or more tall about halfway up the trunk. I could tell that the outer layer of trunk in this area was basically burned off and the inner layer burned too. It's bad.

I used a box cutter knife to remove the dead tissue and have since wrapped the damaged trunk with tree wrap.

What else should I do? I know I messed up but what should I do now to have the best chance of saving the tree in both the short and long term?
