Butterfly Garden

A Morning Walk and Wonderful Discovery

I know this is the Butterfly Forum, but up until I did a search I thought these were butterfly cats.

Above- An Imperial Moth Caterpillar! I've never seen a caterpillar so large before. I posted another picture on my blog with it hanging from the tree to give a better perspective of the size. It was amazing.

It's amazing how many beautiful things you could easily walk by without noticing when distracted. Luckily my kids were along on this morning walk at a local creek. They thought the caterpillars were as cool as I did....almost. :)

Great finds! One of my favorite things to do is to pick an area about 10 feet X 10 feet and see just how many different kinds of bugs I can find. It makes me slow down and really notice!

Thanks Norma, Marian and Michelle! Norma, There is nothing quite like the early morning light in the gardens. Like you I absolutely love it and even when I'm supposed to be doing something else sometimes I just have to grab my camera and record things when the light is right. ~~ The patio is stamped concrete. We waited a few years before being able to do it but are so happy we waited until the budget allowed. We love the color and texture of the patio also. Michelle, ROTFLOL, yes the patio is a lovely place to sit but I never seem to do it. I have all these benches all over the place that I almost never use. I LOVE to have company so I can sit and enjoy the space. ~~ That hydrangea is a standard Hydrangea paniculata 'Tardiva'. It has been in there for a very long time and is the highlight of the shade area this time of the year. That phlox I've photographed it against is my favorite 'Nora Leigh'. Deanne

junglegal, all my property is high ground. The area that you see here and another,the chenille are planted in well drain areas and they are in shade,doing great. I have another area that is full sun and dry soil where I also have chenille planted and ,also do very well. Here is the one in full sun,below. Silvia,thank you,I'll tell him. Felix ~ That was a wonderful morning walk! What a treat to be able to do that every morning. Your paths make me want to work on mine more, as they are overgrown and in need of some work. I love both the grass and brick paths. You have so much to see there, that I'll need to take another tour. Love your spiderwort, and Texas sage. I have them both and I love seeing their blooms. Your roses are pretty. Listening to the music was a nice touch also. It really puts you in an altered state. You have a nice sized piece of property, with plenty of space to meander through lovely gardens. Love your water features also. Happy Gardening ~ FlowerLady

Nature can be soothing. While you're out there do you ever wonder which birds are singing or what trees are embracing you with their leaves and beauty? It might be fun to carry a bird book or tree identifications with you if you are interested in learning more. It would be fun.

Thanks. This season my 5 and 2 year old have been helping me raise some monarchs and black swallowtails. This is my first time raising them as well, so we're all learning a lot in the process...like how to ID milkweed and that I need to plant lots more fennel and carrots next season. :)

We are all much more excited about getting out and seeing what we can discover. I think they're learning a healthy respect and appreciation of nature. I can't think of a more fun way for us to spend our summer together.

Thanks to everyone for answering so many of my questions here and for posting such great pictures and questions of your own. I learn something new every time I check in. This is a great resource!
