Southern California Front Yard: Desperate for HELP!
Comments (28)Lamenting the need to get rid of a good looking plant doesn't equal a suggestion to keep it. The Ficus could be hard-trimmed ruthlessly, but a human would resent that a plant had turned them into a slave ... when it's supposed to be the other way around. I agree with catkim that a different tree would be a better choice, all things considered. "I assume that a walkway the visually greets guests from the sidewalk would appear more welcoming than one that leads from the driveway... Do you think that I'm incorrect in this assumption?" edit: Oops ... I meant, in a word YES! (to the question about the assumption.) You should create a walk that looks like it makes the best sense for the overall property ... and a walk directly to the city sidewalk is not necessarily more welcoming. You might not want to duplicate what exists a mere few feet away. Much of it depends on the geometry of how a walk would be laid out, it's width, materials and/or finishes. I'm not saying a separate walk directly to the city walk would look bad, but that it might not be an improvement over one that ties to the drive. It depends on all the factors involved. You might explore similar houses in the neighborhood to see if others have come up with successful variations. Comments (8)The only caution I would offer is ... what rootstock are these roses on? In the U.S., 'Dr. Huey' is most-common, and it tolerates SoCal soils and water well. In some places, 'Fortuniana' is used -- and it, too, is great in SoCal soils. But at least some Canadian growers use Multiflora rootstock. That rootstock does NOT tolerate alkaline conditions very well. If you live in an area where there are, or have been walnut orchards, and/or Oak Trees, your soil may be in the slightly- acidic range. In some parts of SoCal, though, the soils and water are in the alkaline range. I had recurrent chlorosis problems here, with roses growing on multiflora rootstock. I think that, now, I have only one rose remaining on Multiflora. Thank God. Jeri...See MoreJapanese Maples in Southern California
Comments (1)Depends on where in SoCal.....anywhere along the coast is fine. Moving further inland could pose some problems. Pacific Coast Maples is the nursery in Temecula and it is very reputable and well-known. The cultivars they carry tend to be well-suited for coastal SoCal. Couple of comments - you need to be concerned about soil and irrigation water alkalinity, which can be common in your area. JM's would prefer neutral to slight acidic growing conditions, protection from hot afternoon sun and plenty of water to get established. They will grow fine outdoors all year long - they do NOT need to be brought inside and refrigerated :-) In fact, they won't care for that at all! Comments (11)Home Depot has them, but they're special order as well. They carry the Feather River Door (see link below). It took 3 or 4 weeks to arrive. We have the Prime Advantage, paint-ready finish. It has been installed, but not yet painted (and no handle hardware). (Sorry, there's a lot of reflection on the glass door, so it's difficult to see the word "Pantry") Here is a link that might be useful: Feather River Door Company ~ Interior Collections...See Morefossel
