Southern California Mango Growing... HELP!!!!
Comments (7)Hello Tuesday, I'm not a mango expert (although i have two trees growing - Manila & NDM), but here are some general rules for growing them in So. Cal. 1) Plant them in the warmest (hottest) location in your yard - prefereably a south-facing wall. Be prepared to provide shelter during the ocasional freeze (not sure where you are located) 2) The soil should be ameneded and with good drainage. 3) I would use very little fertilizer for the first couple of years (or use a very mild citrus type at 1/4 the recommended dosage - you don't want to burn the little saplings). 4) Since you grew them from seed, you may not get a tree that will produce same type of fruit you ate (unless it is the Manila variety). It will be years (5+) before the seedlings will produce fruit. Most Mango trees sold in So. Cal are grafted varieties with the Manila root stock. The Manila mango trees do very well in So. Cal. Other varieties that grow well in So. Cal. are Valencia Pride, Keitt, Kent, NDM, and Alphonso. I'm sure there are others. Mango trees don't grow as tall or fast in So. Cal as in Florida. No need to worry about getting a monster mango tree from your seedlings. Have fun and enjoy growing you new mango seedlings!...See MoreStone Yard in Ventura County--Southern California
Comments (11)Much closer to Ventura Co. is a place in Van Nuys that was recommended a year or two ago, here, and where I found my mythical green soapstone. They have an amazing selection of marbles, as well as some of the most interesting granites I've seen. Marble Unlimited is near Saticoy and Van Nuys. They only "sell" to fabricators, but are very nice to the public, will show you around, and they'll handle the sale on behalf of the fabricator so that your stone can be moved to the fabricator's shop right away. Marble Unlimited www.marbleunlimitedinc.com 14554 Keswick Street Van Nuys, CA 91405-1293 (323) 873-4243 All that said, you don't really need an amazing yard for Calcutta or Carrera. Everywhere should have them. You need an amazing fabricator/installer. Find your artisan first. He might have a yard or three he does business with regularly who will go the extra step for you because you're his client, and may give you the better price because you're getting it at the commercial rate. Unfortunately, I don't have any recommendations for fabricators. I can put you in touch with my tile setter (also in the Valley) who has some fabricators who do amazing work but take their merry old time. If you have patience, and can't find someone good nearer to you, send me an e-mail....See MoreHelp: Late 1960s Southern California Home has an identity crisis
Comments (22)Need more pictures, but the long clean and geometric lines, the brick, the facade above the garage, the geometry of the front of the house, the shape of the roof all point away from SoCal Spanish style. Are there arches and curves? Painted decorative tiles? Tower/turret structure? Exposed wooden ceilings beams? Terra-cotta attic gable vent tubes? Don’t replace a roof just to replace it, but don’t try to force a house into something it’s not. This looks like it has more hints of MCM than anything else. If the roof needs work, the new Tesla roof could be a good way to invest in your house and create a coherent updated style....See MoreHelp. What to plant on North wall in Southern California?
Comments (2)I don't know if it affects So. Bay, but out here in No. OC, they aren't selling any orange trees to plant. something about a type of insect. Don't know if it's all citrus or just orange trees. I have 5 citrus trees on my property. can you do an avocado? does that wall get enough sun? maybe a few other fruit trees? other options are cypress, arbor vitae if you want some privacy i'm sure the garden folks will be along tmrw to offer exact plantings....See Morecreatedtocook
