Suggestions for orange-yellow flowers?

I have a small three-level terraced flower bed that I'm planting with some California natives such as penstemons, flax, scabiosas, and sisyrinchium. It gets full midday and afternoon sun by the coast.

I'm going to plant a couple Lotus maculatus 'Amazon Sunset' on the bottom terrace. (I know it's not exactly a drought tolerant plant, but it's a concession to my cat, who loves to lay on it when it gets fully grown.)

I'm looking for suggestions for an orange/yellow flowering perennial that would do well in a California native/drought tolerant bed to work with the Lotus maculatus. I'd like a plant that grows no more than 1' tall.

Small Aloes would fit the bill. Echeverias also produce flowers in the coral-yellow-orange range.

I recently ran across an orange cistus which forms a mounding shrub.

There are quite a few similar species, but Acalypha rhomboidea (Common Three-seed Mercury) has leaves like your plant. It is widely distributed in your part of the country. The distribution maps below show three that are common there. Acalypha virginica is a smaller plant with more narrow leaves, and Acalypha ostryifolia has broader leaves. We have a Lemon Meringe, a sport of Westerland, that does well planted against a furnace chimney (warmest spot in our yard.) It puts out a great spring flush, and repeats at the top of its new canes later in the year. Then, the following year, we pull the canes horizontal, so we get blooms along the laterals. Thanks for the replies. However I am doubtful it is any of the ones mentioned. Definitely not an iceplant which at least has foliage year round. I might be wrong and maybe it is a type of poppy after all, but I don't think it is the California poppy which seem to be bigger and flowers way longer. The flower shape seems to be more like a poppy than a daisy (but I must say I have terrible vision). I will try and get a picture if I can. Some patches are pure (yellow or orange only) but you can always see mixed patches in the same vicinity. The flowers are very dense and its almost hard to notice the foliage.

You could start with a *much* more diluted mix of fertilizer and ease up to it so you can be sure your plant isn't stressed at all, that's what I did with one of my extra sensitive hibiscus who had grown up without fertilizer and didn't like the normal dose all at once, and it did great. :) Especially since it responded with giving you an orange flower after you fertilized last week, I'd say that's a good sign that it really needs some food. I fertilize lightly with every watering because my plants prefer less more often. Unless your soil is amazing, your hibiscus most likely isn't getting what it needs from it to produce those colorful flowers.. I'm not sure, but I was actually reading an article that was talking about plants stealing nutrients, wherein they were saying that seed-mates are able to recognize each other and that they shared the nutrients from the soil/food rather than fighting each other for it. Sticky Monkey Flower is an option. Orange iceplant stays low and cascades nicely. Gazanias are a favorite.

Bulbine frutescens and B. frutescens 'Hallmark', Aloe 'Johnson,
' Hybrid', Aeoniums simsii, Arctotis 'Pink Sugar', Libertia ixioides 'Goldfinger', Oxalis spiralis 'Molten Lava' are a few things that come to mind.

Coral Aloe (Aloe striata) in a nice row and then one of the many lovely Blanket Flowers (Gaillardia) hybrids would be very nice planted in front. Gaillarida 'Arizona" is very pretty with big orange and yellow flowers. If you dead-head them, they will bloom for months and months, from about May all the way through October. Both are very drought tolerant Both bloom for very long periods of time, hummingbirds love the Coral Aloe, and Gaillardia sp. is a Calif. native. Here are a couple of links so you can see:

But, even the species Gaillardia is lovely, too.

Looks like Helianthemum 'Henfield Brilliant' or 'Fire Dragon'. Related to Cistus but in a separate genus.
