Name That Plant!

Tiny yellow/orange flowers

This seems to be very common in disturbed, wet, areas...edge species? Found in open spot NC mtns. looked a bit like smart weed...but I noticed tiny yellow flowers around stem at leaf nodes. Leaves seem to be a choice diet for something....flowers are almost invisible if you're not looking for them.

Any ideas?

I've had the same experience with some of my plants but left the orange specks alone. I was not fertilizing at all, just using plain water, so the fertilizer must have been in the soil I used for the last repotting. The plants seem healthy and undamaged, so I am hoping that in time the fertilizer will get used/flushed out to the point where it is no longer too much. Does over fertilizing cause problems - other than this crystalline debris?

Hi Ken, These aren't ladybug nymphs. that's the strange thing about them. I can't find any pictures or descriptions online that would match. no visible head, legs, wings, etc. just very tiny orange worms, and they are difficult to see unless up close. My camera's broken, and my iPhone camera won't zoom or focus well enough to even see them in a picture... Thank you for your advice. I'll keep trying to identify them.

They were mostly just around the inside of the lip of the pot but some were on the dirt just crawling around, i dont remember any really burrowing or anything but there were and are gnats around because of a bad bag of soil.. I just checked and they're all over the soil as well but i cant really see them doing anything significant? There's a sprout that popped up today though and it looks healthy and bright green so i dont think the roots are being attacked but against the soil they look more grey/tan but against everything else orange.. Oh! And im in the Center of California, Visalia

Whoa! This genus is HUGE ! Could you narrow it down a bit :)?

Is this a native....native to NC?

Hee, I have been pulling it out of my flower beds too...or a very close cousin....terrible stuff.

There are quite a few similar species, but Acalypha rhomboidea (Common Three-seed Mercury) has leaves like your plant. It is widely distributed in your part of the country. The distribution maps below show three that are common there. Acalypha virginica is a smaller plant with more narrow leaves, and Acalypha ostryifolia has broader leaves.
