I thought ant baits were supposed to work...
Comments (21)Jude: You're going to have challenges with warm weather crops if you're on the coast. Not that you can't, just compared to East County, production will be limited. You might want to call the master gardener's extension and ask them what varieties do well there or call Walter Andersens's in Point Loma. regarding the lacewings, I'm going to order online from rincon-vitova. I called City Farmer's Nursery(usually very helpful) and great organic product. And they said that they could order lacewings for me but then left me on hold so I just decided I'll get them online. Also, I had problems with ladybugs taking off also until this year-- they came to me! I attribute this to creating an environment for the adults to propagate by planting beneficial attracting flowering plants that flower at different times of the year. Research IPM(Integrated Pest Management) and you'll learn loads. I'll attach a link of some general plants you may want to plant. The cantaloupes -- a far amount is fruiting right now and have already picked about a half dozen. I just don't know if the plants are going to be able to hold out from the damage I exposed them to. Good luck. Comments (8)kyls...would be a great addition to your nautical theme...good idea about peat moss or you can buy that basket liner stuff (& add dirt)...the bottom round opening would probably need to be wired shut a bit (where the fish come out)...would be great to plant with whatever works in your area in a hanging basket! The top half of the basket (with the blue plastic) could be filled with coral, seashells, glass balls (maybe blue ones to go with your revamped chair!) or even coiling up of some rope and netting. Looks like a great recycling project...have fun with it! You'll come up with something you love! Jeanne S....See MoreInfestation of snails in my backyard. Should I be concerned?
Comments (6)I've come to rely on the pelleted bait - I often sprinkle it around new plantings of seeds to keep the slugs & snails from destroying the seedlings before they can take hold. I had a bad infestation of Cuban brown snails a couple of years ago & now they're almost completely gone from my yard. I buy it @ Home Depot - most garden supply stores should have it - it's iron phosphate & breaks down into fertilizer... Thinking those in the photo might be tree snails? This article says they are not a pest... Here is a link that might be useful: Tree snails...See MoreQuestion about slug and snail bait
Comments (9)My solution is not natural at all, but it works literally overnight. Ammonium sulfate is a cheap fertilizer available at all garden stores. It looks like rock salt and, as far as snails and slugs are concerned, it works like rock salt. As soon as they try to move and hit that salt, they foam up and die. We used to have snails and slugs in the ivy, but one application of AS and they were gone, again, overnight. 25 years later we still had no snails/slugs....See Moredeep___roots
