What should I do with this....bait bucket/basket/wire thingie?

I don't even know where this came from. It just showed up in my garage with all my other junk waiting for a project. It's a blue metal basket and the blue plastic thingie pushes down...that's why i thought it was a bait bucket. So....what can I do with this? I wanted to hang it outside maybe from the tree overhanging my back porch with all the sea things. But I don't know what to put in it. What do you guys think??

You could plant something in it. Just line it with some sheet moss. It would look cool with the plants poking out of the baskets from the bottom too.

Or you could take a cue from kirkus and fill it with pretty stones. I like it!

It is a fish basket. It would look really good with hens and chicks planted in it! Thanks for the idea! I know there are a couple of them around here somewhereLOL I think Luna is right about the sheet moss and to make it less weighty maybe fill it with packing peanuts?

This is from a site called GARDEN RAKE(in case you can't believe us) *********************************************************** The one thing I like about square foot gardening is that you can always add a garden later in the season if you find you have more plants to plant or want to add an additional mini garden. This season a have a small curved straw bale garden, tiered straw bale garden and a straw bale square garden, which is perfect for heavy feeding crops. But one question I am asked a lot is about roots crops. Normally you do not plant root crops in straw bales. But I do have a straw planting technique for potatoes that is perfect for me. It saves space, time and the backache from digging up potatoes. I love gardening Â but I do not like digging root crops! Planting Potatoes in Straw. Get your potatoes seeds ready. I cut the potatoes, leaving several eyes on each piece and let them dry for about two days before I plant them. During this time find some decent soil, and a container. I often use a bushel basket for my first crop. Note: your container can be as large as you want. I usually go for a bushel basket or smaller garbage can. I have used old wood crates (check for stains that could be toxic). Also make sure the container has drainage holes. Once you have your container place it in the spot you plan to leave it during the growing season. The location you choose should get six to eight hours of sun. Add 6 inches of dirt to the bottom of the container; place the potato seeds in the soil and cover. Water well and go plant more of your garden. In about a week you will see new growth coming out of the ground. When the growth is about 6 inches tall, cover with straw. Repeat this process during the summer. The potatoes will set out new roots in the straw and in turn will produce more potatoes. I save time, space and digging using this method. There are two other added benefits. Since the potatoes grow in straw they are dirt free and very clean. The other benefit is that I donÂt get potato bugs using this method. The only problem I had was one year I grow them in the garden with no container and used hay. It was a big mistake. The hay attracted mice looking for seeds and I lost most of the crop. One other plus to growing potatoes using straw and a container, you always have small potatoes to use and they are very easy to harvest, just pull the straw back and pick them. I also grow a new crop of potatoes mid summer. Try growing potatoes in straw. I think you will enjoy it. This growing process really saves space and makes growing potatoes fun.

Hello all, I am a long time lurker on gardenweb, but this is my first post. I live in Dallas, and I went to a local plant sale in Dallas a few weeks ago, and I arrived as everyone was winding down. I noticed that in the dumpster someone had thrown away 5 brugs, so I picket them out of the dumpster and took them home with me. 4 of them were in 1 gallon containers and one was in a 5 gallon container. So, I planted them about two weeks ago, and I woke up this morning to 45 degree temps. I do not know if the roots will survive being planted this late in the fall. So, I would like to take some cuttings, and root them in water. As mentioned before, I have 4 small plants, but the bigger plant already has a Y. Can I cut all 5 of them at the base and try to root them? For the bigger one, can I cut into 3 parts and root each part? Thanks in advance for the help. Brian

I think I take the prize for having the smallest main bathroom! Our house was built in the 1800's so bathrooms were not an option... The upstairs bathroom has a big claw foot tub... but the tub is set under a slanted ceiling so you can't stand up in it and there is nowhere to move it so it is very INCONVENIENT! I guess I shouldn't complain because at least we have an upstairs bathroom to use in the middle of the night! So, because of this, the downstairs bathroom is our main bathroom. It is approximately 46" wide by 9' long. Just enough room for a toilet, small 18" vanity (the only counter space is the small area around the sink) and corner shower. A regular shower won't even fit. The only blessing that comes with it is when the pantry was converted to this bathroom, the PO built a shallow cupboard above the toilet! Give me enough room to store some towels, toiletries, etc. It is about 8" deep and 28" wide. It goes from just above the toilet to the ceiling. If you lean back too far while sitting, your hair can get caught in the handles :) I wonder if you couldn't do something like this to add some storage space--- Note the towel rack in the pictures... it gives you an idea on how small the bathroom really is.

I liked the old maps idea for our decor theme - if not for this then maybe for other areas - and found some cheap reproductions from China on Ebay - I'll just have to age them. I'm going to keep an eye out for orbs or other things to fill it with as well... since it is not really transparent on the bottom I could probably use filler underneath to keep the expense down if I go that route. One challenge with tall objects in there is the inner height is only 12" yet 10" across so things tend to lay sideways too much. Still working on this with new fresh ideas thanks to everyone!

kyls...would be a great addition to your nautical theme...good idea about peat moss or you can buy that basket liner stuff (& add dirt)...the bottom round opening would probably need to be wired shut a bit (where the fish come out)...would be great to plant with whatever works in your area in a hanging basket!

The top half of the basket (with the blue plastic) could be filled with coral, seashells, glass balls (maybe blue ones to go with your revamped chair!) or even coiling up of some rope and netting.

Looks like a great recycling project...have fun with it! You'll come up with something you love!

YEP it's a fish basket...........thanks for posting b/c I have several unused ones in my grage...but not for long! I like Jeanne's idea especially adding the items on the blue part. Can't wait to dig mine out.

Maybe you could find some fun wooden fish to put in the bottom and I think a blue float in the top be perfect.

Like all of your ideas especially if you want a nautical theme. When I first saw it I thought of the eel pots/traps that are used.

I saw a shapely lady, doesn't that bottom half look like a skirt. Put a large ball in the top and then something for the head. Give her a succulent skirt and some other color for the top, maybe even creeping thyme

Could also hypertufa it. Lots of possibilities.

Looks like a light fixture to me. Filled with shells, fish models and seaweed, wired with a small lamp and hanging next to your first mate's chair. I'd probably include a little Nemo clown fish in it for whimsy or some squid tentacles for the on/off switch. Or maybe a lead sinker on a fishing line. I dunno, gotta ruminate on this one some more. Wow....I post this before I leave on a trip and I come back with so many ideas my head is "swimming"! (i was gone to canada for a week...let me say coming from 109 heat index to walking outside and not sweating...wow...but i digress) I really really like the using this as a succulent sphere...I think i'll have to read up on that. Yet, Bettys idea of a succulent skirt was pretty fab too....and cheryl, the idea of a light fixture had never occurred to me...yet, how wonderful! I'm telling you my head hurts from all the possibilities! ha thank you guys, i'll post some pics from the completed project.
