oppss...did I just make a mistake with hardware cloth?

Hi everyone,

I have gopher issues and put hardware cloth under all of my raised beds. I've also in the past, made root ball cages out of poultry netting for my trees.

A couple of weeks ago, I made a raised bed of sorts out of bricks, lined it with hardware cloth and planted some trees..... While watering last night, I realized that I may have made a mistake putting hardware cloth under a tree....normally I used poultry netting.

I'm trying to decide if I need to redo this last project of mine. Do tree roots need to get more than 1/4" in diameter? The hardware cloth is 1/4" and the poultry netting holes are much bigger (at least 1/2").

Should I replant by replacing the hardware cloth with poultry netting? The 1/4" hardware cloth has worked extremely well under my vegetable garden raised beds, but the seasonal roots of veggies are very different from permanently growing tree roots.....

thoughts?

enjoy what looks like will be a beautiful day!
