Shady Postage-stamp beds

I live in Sacramento, in zone 9b. The entrance to my fiance's tiny house faces west, with a garage to the south of it that extends out westward and also opens west. Along either side of the sidewalk that extends westward from the porch to the driveway are tiny flowerbeds, maybe 2 or 3 feet by 8 feet. The one along the garage wall has a dead hydrangea in it and gets nearly total shade, with a tiny bit of direct sunlight as the sun sets. The other one has a horribly neglected hydrangea in it and is shaded by the garage in the winter and by a tree in the summer. I want to take out the hydrangeas and plant something more in scale with the small beds. Their soil is clay and there is no sprinkler system. What would be good to plant here for the best color and interest through the year?
