Amphibian instinct !

This morning while I was taking picture in my garden,

I found this guy hiding in my Aechmea chantinii 'Black'.

I thought only treefrog that was brom inhabitant

and toad always live on the ground, but !?

Nice photo Stephania

I have had lots of those little guys visiting my greenhouse. Guess all the rain we had this summer made for great play area!

Stephanie: How do you know that it is a toad and not a frog? I have a similarly looking amphibian (a frog I think) occasionaly residing in one of my billbergias. Figure it is a good thing, but maybe someone has a different opinion about this.

Oh, wow. That looks like it. His isn't quite as full as yours but it looks the same. Now I have to find out how to propagate it so I can have one too. Whats one more thing to overwinter, lol. He says his is a perrenial here though but we are a little warmer down here. Thanks for the tip about leaving a light on. I have geckos that live in my breaker box during the winter but had never seen the anole until I was next door one day. I followed him around for quite a while watching him blow up his throat while he followed Cindy around, lol. I think there is one form of thunbergia that said clock vine is another name for it so that must be the oe. Thank you all.

Wouldn't it be nice if people just spoke the truth? Clearly someone who advocates the use of a 22 to solve a problem isn't worth engaging. IMO, it's best to just ignore that level of intelligence. I'm in awe of the work some of you are doing to help cats with TNR and fostering colonies and so forth. I'm very impressed, and feel that I've learned a lot from your detailed explanations. I intend to find a local chapter and get involved -- for no other reason than it would be a good thing to do. What a concept, huh? As for all of those who were mocked with sneers of "feeding the cute kitties," it is heartening to hear of people with kind hearts. Bless them for being that way. And the exaggerations about the killing of birds is amazing. I have 5 cats that all go outside. Between all of them, they maybe kill 4 birds a year. Granted, they are domestic and well cared for, but they still have instincts. I also had feral cats around my property. I didn't find "tons of feathers." I wonder... should we start killing all the hawks, crows, owls, and other predators of "songbirds"? This whole "songbird populations are being decimated" blah, blah, blah is just another BS soapbox that people who don't like cats like to jump on. And, of course, ALL of the "feral" cats are loaded with fleas. How is this known by those who profess it with such exuberance? Did it ever occur to any of you that there are rabbits, raccoons, mice, moles, voles, opossums, etc. etc. with fleas in your environment? It's never ceased to amaze me how people justify their thoughts that some animals/people are worthy of their care and concern, while others are not. The "outside" dog in the prison (aka kennel) vs. the "inside dog" by the fireplace. My cat vs. some other cat. "Songbirds" vs. grackles. Pet pigs or cows on "family farms" vs. the tortured animals (look up gestation crates) that we all have no problem eating. We're all God's creatures, aren't we? No one's telling you, original poster, that you HAVE to do anything. You whined. We answered. Try to find some compassion in your heart for those poor cats and your neighbors.

Farmhousebound, Is that one of those very expensive custom hoods? Or is that a wood hood with metal trim and insert? I really need a custom wall hood as well to go over my Chambers Range, but the one that fits the space is Rangecraft and it is $4,500 on CLEARANCE (in stainless, not painted)! So I was thinking of building one out of wood with stainless trim and popping in an insert. Thanks! BTW: I'm going Mid-Mod, but my colors are also blue (or aqua) and Jadeite green. My original plan was Mission cabinetry in walnut with Jadeite accents and a powder blue stove. I ended up with a red Chambers instead, so I'm going more bold with either steel blue or aqua cabinets and a Jadeite backsplash. I have a decent collection of Jadeite and aqua glass, so that was my jumping off point (but that stuff sells for WAY too much nowadays). I'm mixing up colors on both cabinets and countertops - wall cabs will be either steel blue or aqua, freestanding hutch will be high gloss red to match stove, base cabs will either match wall cabs (depending on price quote I get) or Stainless Steel or a dark matte charcoal. The island base cabs will either be matte charcoal or high gloss red (probably charcoal so that it doesn't compete with the stove and hutch). Countertops along wall (each side of Chambers Range) will be either soapstone or concrete. Island workspace counters will be the same, and raised bartop will be butcherblock - was going to be natural Cherry if I went with walnut cabs, but I have to see how that looks with the high gloss red. I might have to go with maple stained ebony. My floor is natural Tung Oiled Sassafras, so I'm ignoring it as a neutral (yellows / oranges / browns - darkens with age). All my other appliances are stainless and take up one entire wall (except a few blue or aqua cabs above going to ceiling). My kitchen will definitely be "ecclectic" but that works for me. The key to mixing colors and surfaces is to have a balance so it doesn't appear BUSY. Your eye must be able to "rest" and all the stainless does that in my layout.

thirstypotato, there's a slight chance of making the topic a lot more complicated than it needs to be, especially when starting out! A lot of the guys posting videos on Youtube are doing a lot of tinkering and "optimizing", but none of that is necessary to have a successful worm bin. People do that stuff for the sheer fun of trying to build a better mouse trap. Don't get hung up on "optimizing" a worm bin that you don't even have yet. Spending extra money is also not necessary. You don't need to buy peat moss. The worms will do just fine in shredded paper and/or cardboard bedding that's been pre-moistened. You don't need to buy corn meal, or Tums. Worms will eat your kitchen waste and be 100% fine without any dietary supplements. Whether you need to spend money on starter worms is an open question. It's true that red wigglers aren't all over the place in a typical garden and bigger earthworm (tunneling) species are easier to find. Red wigglers live in piles of refuse. A neglected manure pile out back of a stable is the kind of place you want to look. Or try Craigslist. If nobody is advertising red wigglers, maybe post a "Wanted" ad. If you can find even a cupful of red wigglers for a few bucks or barter, you can breed up a fine herd in time. It just means you'd have to wait it out while the worms build up their population (insert Barry White joke here). I think your instinct is correct that hauling in leaves from your leaf pile might introduce a little more biodiversity than you want for your indoor bin. Not necessary. As for "worm pee," the unpleasant truth is that worms DO pee in the bin...they pee through their SKINS. They have pores around their body with a kind of a proto-kidney behind them. But we're not talking "gallons" of pee. It's really just a kind of moisture situation. Ideally, once a worm bin is set up and running smoothly it won't have much runoff (leachate) coming out the bottom. The moisture produced by the food breaking down, whether or not it's been through a worm first, should be mostly absorbed by the bedding. Things do overbalance from time to time and there could be a temporary excess of leachate, which is no big deal as a positive or negative, as long as the bin material doesn't stay soggy and get anaerobic/smelly. Worm boosters may try to get you excited about "Worm Tea" being valuable useful stuff that the worm bin produces, but in fact it's just excess overflow. Your bin needs a way to drain off small amounts of leachate, but don't picture gushing rivers of the stuff.

Hi Stephania,
Funny you should post a pic of your toad,because I think that I now have one living in my plant room. When I brought all the plants indoors in late Sept.,I checked them for bugs,etc.first,but it seems that a toad did find a way to sneak in with a plant. The 'evidence' was a small turd on the floor,and some mini-puddles.
And at night,some loud throaty noises that would stop when I tried to find the source. Maybe one day it will show up and I can get a pic. (before it goes oudoors again)

The most noticeable differences are: Frogs tend to have smoother skin where as a toad has dry and warty type skin and prefer a bit dryer conditions

The difference between a frog and a toad is not as hard to see as you think.
A toad has a more granular skin, a frog has smooth skin (there are a few exeptions). Frogs have big muscles in their hind legs so they can jump quite some distance. Toads take it a bit slower, hardly ever jump and mostly walk. Some toads can even run pretty fast.

There are other (more important) criteria but you have to take them apart to see that. So I'm not telling anyone :-)

Going by the picture I think this looks a lot like Bufo melanostictus. A pretty common toad in Asia.
Toads can be good climbers though, especialy when there's a nice wet spot like that to cool them down in the tropical heat.

These guys eat grashoppers by the dozen Chanin, be very very happy he's there.

We have lots of big toads here (Bufo marinus) and I often find them in the rotted-out center cup of a big old Neo, or burrowed in the potting soil around a plant's base, but never down inside a narrow, spiny Aechmea. That must have been hard getting in there!

Stephania, I was originally horrified when I saw your toad in that aechmea - but good photo. I love frogs, as does everyone (?), but the cane toad ( Bufo ? - should be 'wartis horribilis!) is much maligned here in Australia. Like the rabbit and fox (and sheep!), it was introduced for all the wrong reasons. Now cane toads have migrated south from Queensland into N.S.W., and 'yobbos' and school kids play golf with them! As road-kill, they kill native birds and animals when they eat their poisonous glands. I hope your toad is harmless!

I found sometimes taod burrow in my plant pots, for hiding :-P.
But, as Sander mentioned, they are a good insect controller.

It's funny, our Bufos are the same species as the Cane Toads in Australia, but for some reason they haven't gotten the same bad rap here as they have in Oz. They do pose a threat to household pets if they are not smart enough to avoid trying to catch them in their mouths, but our dogs seem to know better. Other than that, they don't cause any problems, although if you try to pick one up it will promptly empty its bladder on you in an attempt to become smaller.

We live in a rural area, so they are everywhere, especially on "termite nights". It is impossible to drive at night without hitting at least one, but I don't go out of my way to do so. Hopefully they are consuming their weight in termites! That's a much bigger problem for us.

Cane toads are eeeevil and nassssty! There's a whole section on their Wikipedia page about why they're so hated here in Australia.

My in-laws used to have them in abundance at their old house. My mother in law had a pair of long handled tongs which were her toad catching tongs. She'd stick them in plastic bags then freeze them, (more humane than hitting them with a golf club) then chuck them in the bin.
