Use potting soil instead of peat for sowing the seeds.

I've also WSed daylilies, always used regular potting soil, and it worked fine. Just winter sow them like everything else.

Daylilies can be WS same as other seeds. They'll sprout when the time is right and grow same as other seeds. They don't need cold stratification but the ones I WS last year grew nicely. I also grew them indoors & got my first bloom this year:

I saw an article about how difficult daylilies are to grow from seed but wonder if the "difficulty" referred to the fact they won't bloom for a few years when grown from seed. Then I stumbled across an article where someone said to simply toss the seeds in a ziploc baggie with some damp (not moist) Perlite and set it in a sunny window for two weeks. Just for grins 'n giggles, I tossed 12 seeds in a baggie and followed those directions. Lo and behold on day 14 I had 12 sprouts, each about 2" tall and looking just like miniature daylilies. I carefully lifted them out, potted them in quart pots and grew them on the rest of the season. They grew to 8" tall, went dormant in the fall but came up again when the weather warmed up. Now when I see seedpods on my daylilies I harvest the seeds to winter sow.

So you can keep them going all year long. I read the post about the baggie method. Thanks gardenweed_zba.

That is pretty good getting blooms the first year from seed. I have bought plugs about 4 years ago and have yet to see a bloom!!

I also have started some seed of the common estella d' oro maybe 5 years ago and I have never seen a bloom there also.

I always have nice foliage on them but never any blooms. I got to be doing something wrong if they bloom first year from seed!!! Or even second year at that!!

Carolyn, that is why I post about them. Because on another post there were mixed views about WS them. Different results.

Well I didn't winter sow them they were inside started with the baggie method then I potted them up after they germinated. Then planted when they were good to handle. Knowing me I probably potted them in the spring sometime or heck I might of done it late summer early fall.

The baggie method works great for germination. Though I have never gotten blooms and yet I still have foliage. Each year I cross my fingers, it has been so long since I bought the plugs I have no idea what kind they were. I think they were a red, or burgundy, I forget.

Ladyrose, maybe wsing will bring better results than what I had. I mean heck everything is worth a shot. My experience has left a bad taste in my mouth for daylillies!!

The daylilies I grew via the baggie method did not bloom first year from seed. I grew them on in quart pots that summer in a sunny window. They went dormant in late fall, towards the end of October. The following spring they sprouted in the quart pots and I transferred them to gallon pots that summer 2009. Last year when they broke dormancy and sent up new growth was the first time I saw a flower bud and that's the one that bloomed. I don't know what type they are but they look like the lighter yellow version of Stella d'Oro, one called 'Happy Returns.'
