2 month old Adenium Obesum seedlings

2 months old, 7 are going great, and the other one has stunted growth for some reason. What do you think? Any tips?

They are so cute! From my experience with adenium seedlings (I have about 50, the oldest are about nine months old the youngest about a week and all ages in between) the just all grow at different rates. I have one that is one and a half months old and is the size of a one week old but is on its four pair of leaves! The leaves are tiny too. And right next to it is its sister that is about four times bigger! They are so exciting to grow aren't they, do you know what the flower will be like on yours?

Bought some Solo 9oz. cups tonight and potted them up. I'm hoping for some nice "fatties" too. I've had good luck with one I grew last summer. It's now flowering and all that happened after a good pruning. From Garden 2009

Hi there, well firstly I'm no adenium expert but I have been able to grow 3 to just over 3yrs old and one to 2 yrs old from seeds here in the less than tropical conditions of the UK. Saying that, I have lost far more than are surviving at present...haha!! I found the site below very useful in helping me out along with folks here on the plumie and cactus&succ forums. Very young seedlings can take a lot more water than older plants which should be treated as cacti in the winter...very little water if at all, through to tropicals in the summer months...taking up rather more water than you would imagine. Apart from when thay are germinating the soil should drain as fast as water is put onto it really, the faster the better, never let them sit in wet saucers. My last batches of seeds failed miserably, I think that was due to old seeds from ebay, but I have yet to find them for sale as seed or plants here in the UK except for one plant I saw several years ago which was too dear. Here's a pic of mine for you to see. One of the bigger 3yr old plants made buds last year and the year before in late summer early autumn but they all aborted before they developed fully. I like to germinate under a lid on my dvr, and as soon as they are up, they go full sun, with no lid. The lid then would kill them. Honestly, the only three reasons I can think of not to go full sun immediately are; if you don't bury the seeds and plant on top as I do, they may blow away, you cannot control the weather outside, and you may get a hard rain that will unpot some or all, and if you have a lid over them. Just remember that if you let them grow too long under anything less than Sun, that you will need to slowly acclimate them to full Sun. Do it when they have 1-2 sets of leaves, and you'll be ok - just watch for storms! I'm in Galveston and you guys seem to get a thunderstorm most days as of late.

Agartta, ha ha you crack me up. I was going to say “it’s not how big it is.............. Maria Elena, No, I had no issues with growth last year. The larger plant with the seed pod in the photo above was one of our own seeds we grew through our Winter and even with the cold, those seedlings still grew well. Our growing season this year started with heatwave conditions from the get go. The tiny seedling and the 4 varieties planted at the same time, (Rinoa’s seed) grew very slow from the beginning. (All four different varieties behaved the same.) Our babies had to adapt quickly to the heat, but I believe this is what slowed them from the beginning. As for fertiliser - we don’t fertilise our babies regularly, they usually get enough nutrients from the soil mix. But, as these grew slower, we did supplement them occasionally with a little fertiliser, (one with a slightly higher nitrogen content). Fertiliser did not seem to help with growth. We do also, feed all our babies with seaweed solution (seasol) while they are small. As for whether it harms the baby flowering early, I don’t know, but I will let you know if I notice anything different with this one. I agree that it takes a lot of energy from the plant to flower, as it also does for growing seed pods. But, I am sooo curious to see if this little one can flower....so fingers crossed. :) Here’s a photo of the seed/variety this little one is from. (Rinoa’s photo)

Unfortunately I don't know the color of the flower, but I am sure it will be a pleasant surprise!

Wow, those look great! I really want one of these plants and tried to root a cutting from a larger plant, that however did not work. So looks like I will try the seed route. Yours are doing very well though.

Did you have to do anything special to thicken the caudex? Like have a fan blowing on them to help them become sturdy.

no, nothing special really. I water then 1-2 times per week still, but I am starting to ween them off a bit for the summer.

I water every day in fully sunny weather, when its cloudy only every second day (its the middle of summer here). The link I'm going to put in is the best info around on them (I've done a lot of research, being a full time mum/maid). Ashley you should defiantly go from seed, they are so easy and fun! At the moment mine are growing every day! Really recommend them, you get more attached growing from seeds I think!
