WS 2011 look back

I'm beginning to put a plan together for this year's WS and thought it made sense to look back at what did well vs what didn't do so well this year. I've never experienced extreme weather patterns here in central CT the like of which we've had the past two growing seasons. The summer of 2010 was a total drought with extreme heat and little to no rain the entire season. It was my first WS attempt; watering my seed-grown plants took 2-3 hours every day and I worried about running my well dry.

Fast forward to summer 2011 and rainfall totals from May to October as measured by the rain gauges in my garden are staggering at 39 inches so far. That doesn't include the 8 ft. of snow that fell last winter. New England weather is reliably "changeable" but these extremes seem...well, extreme, even for NE.

What did well? Well, hydrangeas for certain! Astilbe, hosta, ferns and turtlehead were pretty happy with all the wet. A few others that are supposed to like wet conditions didn't thrive in them.

What did you see this year that made you wonder about the effects of climate change on your garden?

My roses did well. I don't think the Hosta's liked all that rain. A lot of plants disappeared from the excessive rain. (Campunula's and Salvia's).

I just pulled my Lilies out of the ground, they are doing exceptionally well. I will be giving some to the neighbors.

Hydrangea, especially the paniculata types, did great. The late summer rain and then the lack of frost kept them in their reddish phase a lot longer than usual. Here's a picture of one capped with today's snow.

Early autumn roses and japanese anemones did well too.

The wintersown pink hollyhock really liked the early summer rains. It was much better than the pathetic specimens I ripped out the year before.

The echinacea I wintersowed never sprouted; I think it just got too wet. I tried sowing again in March and got plenty of seedlings to plant around the yard. So I guess it does not need a cold period to germinate.

Tomatoes were not at all happy this summer, especially when they got tons of rain after such a hot summer. Disease city.

The cardinal flower planted in the ground was not happy, but the one planted in a self watering container looked great. I will definitely repeat that experiment next year.

Neil,I have no idea what it will do in z-5. I was surprised it was a perennial here,being the packet and other sources I seen said it was an annual! To be safe sow it as an annual,I did last year, and had blooms all summer long on it. It is a really good grower and seems to be pretty tolerant. I had clumps out back on the south facing hill,along the side of my house that has late day part sun,and out front under the blue spruce,also part sun. The ones out back getting the southern light did the best,although the other clumps were not too shabby!;) I thought this was going to be a delicate plant,it is by no means delicate,it just looks and smells that way!;) Just remember when in doubt,hold back a bit of seed. Those seeds go along way,and you know where you can find more if you forget!:) Carrie! You are so welcome!:)

First.....Welcome back!!! Personally I don't plan much for the following years. I do start keeping a wish list early but that's about it. If I need to move something I usually keep that mental note until fall and move it when I do most rearranging. As for ws'ing I keep a MS Access database that I record all my seeds in and keep info on scientific name, common name, type (annual, perennial, grass, vine, ect) habit, color, date sown, germinaton date, source of seed and a column for notes. Then I create a report of just the name, date sown and date germinated for Trudi's WS Database submissions. I use Access because that is what our instructor had us Hort. students use to create our databases for our plant ID classes and fill in columns for cultural info for each plant/tree/ect. It's an easy program to use in my opinion. I like the fact too that I can create queries to show me all of a certain type or color from the databases!

All right, here they are - my best pictures: Alyssum, which seems to be the only result from throwing a "mixed wildflower" bag The ridiculous petunias, happily crowding the dusty miller and carnations (they already ate a pansy plant): A pink and white daffodil: Snapdragons i thought were done for, came out of nowhere: Lavender Lady. Looking good! I finally had the time to figure out the photo uploading here. Here's our first cereus bloom of the year - I slept in a little, so it's on the verge of closing, but it's still one of my favorite things about Tucson summers! Here's our lantana, cape honeysuckle, bouganvilla and texas ranger. All but the ranger was frozen to the ground and cut back to the base in March. So great to see them back! Hopefully the grass will look much better (or like grass) by July! Not terribly impressive yet, but these next shots are all newly planted from late March, when we installed drip and many plants I'd been dreaming about for years! Butterfly mist - first blooms Pink rain lily - first bloom ever! Mexican bird of Paradise and Red Bird of Paradise were volunteers prior to our planting, but now they are on drip and much happier. Here's the Mexican Bird of Paradise with tecoma stans gold star, orange jubilee, mexican petunia and a few others in the background. Here's another night blooming cactus - Also the first of the season. I forget the name of the cactus! Notice the family of doves who have taken over the old cactus wren's nest. This is the third family this year! I think the babies just hatched within the last couple of days. Okay, two more! I've wanted to post pictures for a few months now so I hope you don't mind me posting a ton this time:) Newly planted fig tree - Planted it on Mother's Day to celebrate my first year as a mom. This last one is another dream finally realized - well, the start of it at least! Our Father's Day weekend project was building a garden bed. We'll finally have some veggies growing this fall! Thanks:) By the way, love the plumeria. I had one on my balcony in my apartment a few years back. I might have to look into planting one here in my yard!

We always have a period of seriously dry heat - 90s, long stretch, little/no rain - in the summer. This year I was away during 10 days of it, too, so anything that was still in containers was pretty crispy when I got back. But in the ground, my gaura, echinacea and gaillardia were the absolute best; rudbeckia Cherokee Sunset and althea officinalis were both winners. Rosemary, which I love, love, love, did fine. Basil was singing for joy.

Squashes, not so much - the heat breeds all kinds of bugs down here - I still haven't identified them all yet, but I sure know the squash bugs and squash vine borers. Yeah, I could do without them - better remay plan next year. Tomatoes, too, were just so-so.

Annuals - portulaca loves the heat here - my cuphea Batface did well, and so did centratherum Pineapple Sangria. The centratherum is a later bloomer though, as is hibiscus sabdariffa, which was doing fine, but I think tonight's freeze will kill it.

That's about all - the big hydrangea on the property did NOT do very well this year - very scanty blooms. It may need a pruning; I'll have to research that.
