Hi Alex, I believe it's normal what's going on w/ your ZZ plants; the new growth does take some time to unfurl. Both of mine are doing the same thing now too, each of 2 pots I grow have 3 new sprouts. Generally they seem to put new growth like this in Sept. & again in Feb. from what I've observed in prior yrs. Each of mine has had a yellowing branch in the central part of their pot, I believe that to be natural die-off of the older growth. If you give the yellowing growth a gentle tug, it may come right off in your hand as mine did. Should you see a lot more of that, I'd be concerned, if it's just a branch or 2, I wouldn't worry. Maybe cut back watering to every 3rd week? Also are they in clay or plastic pots? Any chance of a picture? From the sound of it, it's all normal behavior so I'd say keep doing what you've been doing.

Hi, new to this thread. I just purchased 3 ZZ plants from HD the other day and re-potted 2 in a large ceramic pot and one by itself in a larger pot. I used MiracleGro Moisture Control. I did not add any perlite, etc. to the soil. I'm new to these plants. On watering issue. How often should I water, once a week or when I see the soil completely dry? What if I added 1/2 glass of water every week; it's not too much and not too little and the roots will have to work to get to the water. Any advice will be appreciated. One plant site under an east facing window and the other sits on my bath tub under a narrow east facing window, both are upstairs. TammyPie

Thanks for the help. The photo is from my phone camera, so it is not the best. But you can clearly see the lighter, brighter green new leaves (third rhizome from the right) which unfurled from their sheath just in the past 48 hours!!! No kidding. Before that, it looked like the "sheathed" growth of an unopened rubber-tree plant leaf. This is in addition to the other new shoots that have appeared since I got the plant on May 11. This rapid growth ASTONISHED me, as on-line research kept referring to ZZ plants as "very slow growers." (I am joking with my friends that my ZZ plant somehow aspires to be an oak tree, or that atheletes must be sneaking into my home when I am at work and dumping performance enhancing drugs into its pot. LOL.) I watered it on the 18th and watered it again last night, June 1, and am sticking with watering every 2 weeks Should I water more often? The current pot is about 10 inches across. Last night I purchased one that is about twice that size (the largest one I could find with drainage holes) and will re-pot the plant tonight.

Thx Nick, that's probably abt how often I water too, maybe twice a month. I don't fertilize much or often. I think I recently did as I just fertilized most of my plants given the arrival of Spring. Here' s my original plant started from single leaf. I have forgotten how old this is. I noticed one of the older stems has thickened up. This is the first time mine has done that. I believe it happens w/ age, the older, larger ones that one sees in the store have that. A closer look in the lower right shows the tuber which has pushed itself up in the mix becoming visible, which it hadn't been when last repotted.
