the ten yr old boy who touched my heart today

two weeks ago nick came to my garage sale with his mom. i had a lot of my winter sown plants for sale. he was torn between plants and yugioh cards. he bought plants. he wanted more and went home and made money to come back. well, he insisted on paying for his plants that i was trying to just give him. it was only about $3.00. he finally gave in when i gave him a bunch of annuals because they werent going to last to much longer but he really liked them. He listened very carefully when i described winter sowing to him and lasagna beds. he asked questions about plants i didnt expect from a 10yr old.

today, he came to my house in the pouring down rain and brought me a card with singing hamsters thanking me for the plants and a bunch of cardboard for my lasagna beds!!! i was so touched by his thoughtfulness. He wants me to teach him more on the winter sowing. it hasnt stopped raining since last night but this sweet little boy brought sunshine to my day!!!

There is still hope for our kids, despite what the press says.

Several days ago, I was out in the front corner beds, planting a Hakone Grass under an old Flowering Cherry. A young oriental boy, probably early to mid-teens, was walking along the adjacent road, and he stopped and gestured to get my attention. "You have the coolest yard in the neighborhood." he stated in a very matter-of-fact tone. "Thank you!" I replied, grinning from ear to ear. "You're welcome!" he answered, and walked on down the road.

It made my day.

Congratulations on your newly aquired Lawn-Boy! Im glad to see someone who appreciates a fine machine. About 24 years ago I aquired my first Lawn-Boy, a brand new F series with aluminum deck. Man I treasured that mower, cleaning it like brand new every mowing and it treated me with one of the best looking lawns in the neighborhood for several years. I suddenly had to change jobs and move out of country for a couple years and ended up giving the mower to a young brother in law. I really hated to see it go but you have to do what you have to do for the familys future. I returned to visit family about 5 months later and when I asked brother in law how he liked the mower, well he kind of gave a dirty look and shook his head and proceeded to tell me how much of a POS that mower was and how the engine was locked up and he just threw it away! The ninny forgot to mix fuel with oil and destroyed it, only to blame the mower! Im very glad to see a mature person take posession of your mower and hope you have a lot of fun with it!

Aaaaahhhhhhhh! Something similar happened last night w/ our 3 1/2yr old. He's been potty trained since about 3 but regressed the past 3wks and has pooped in his underwear. Since talking wasn't helping I went out and bought 3 more of his favorite Monster shirts (a different one for each day) and hung them up in the LR. I told him I was holding them hostage and each week he went w/o pooping he could pick one out. All wknd. he kept walking past them telling them how he was 'I GOING TO URN MY MONTAH HERT BACK!' (he has no volume control). So last night DS1 (the one that threw the rock and has been grounded) was very good in all ways and manners last night for DH. DS2 overheard DH telling DS1 that he noticed how attentive he was and did everything asked right away and that he really appreciated it. So DS2 pipes in "YOU LIKE ME TOO DADDY?! I DIDN'T POOP IN MY HANTIES FAH A WHOLE WEEK! I A GOOD BOY!" Love 'em to pieces! He woke up to a monster shirt today.

Good Morning Missred.... I think that I would call the school board office ( if this is a public school ) and ask them what the policy is about bullying. If it is a private school I would ask for a meeting with members of the board. These days they should be much more sensitive about this type of treatment from one student to the other. My children attend a private school and I would not hesitate to take whatever measures necessary to have this situation improved.....my youngest is 10 and I asked her what is done for her class. She told me that if kids take advantage of another child (that is what they are teaching that bullying is) they are pulled out of class and spend the day with the elementary counselor. It only takes one act to cause this. They have to do that for much less severe treatment than your daughter has been receiving. Are you saying that the bully has engaged your daughter in inappropriate touching? If that is the case I would raise h3ll...today. I had a situation when my older daughter was in elementary school and the child involved was moved to another class...that day. I don't know how they handled it after that but I was assured by the principal that it would be handled. That is not to be tolerated. Not even once. It is lawsuit waiting to happen or guaranteed spot on the evening news. I think that is why the Principal moved so quickly in our case. I don't think that the size of school should dictate the action taken here. I have taken teachers to task as have many other parents have in our private school and the next year their contracts have not been renewed. If a teacher was not doing everything possible to stop this I would be there everyday after school and would probably pull my child out of their class. As far a students behavior is concerned your school has a responsibility to provide a safe environment for each student. They are clearly not doing that. Take them to task. Do it today. You should not have to talk to the mom unless you are allowing your daughter to play with the bully outside of school. I cannot imagine that you are doing that. Do not allow the school to approach the situation as something that the girls need to work out as though your daughter is at fault in some way.

I'd let him do it. He'll learn a lot also from it. when I was young (about 9) my older sister 'babysat' the girl across the street in the summer while her parents were at work. She was probably 12-14 yrs old (my sister was probably 13 or so). 'S' was mentally disadvantaged for sure. However, she could get herself around and did - and often played with those of us a bit younger. Her parents needed someone there with her tho - to be sure she'd be safe, fix her lunch and check on her off 'n on. My sister mostly watched some tv, fixed lunch, made sure 'S' came in to eat and checked every 30 min or so to be sure she was within hearing distance, kept misc kids from coming into the house (unsupervised) and answering the phone and door. When 'S' was outside with us we all kept an eye on her. She had a small playhouse in her backyard and we often played cops 'n robbers there. or cowboys and Indians. her playhouse was the sheriff's office and we'd run around arresting / capturing each other. we had our cap guns and holsters to wear and someone got to wear the badge! we expended a lot of energy doing that and 'S' got a good amount of exercise those days. My sister would call her in for lunch and to rest in the afternoon. It was a great summer job for my sister who was in her 1st yr of HS. This sounds like a good opportunity for your son and the younger boy - and the mom. She gets some time freed up, the younger boy gets a different (younger) 'playmate' and your son will make a bit of $s while learning about those with disabilities which will be beneficial as he grows up. Even tho there's an age difference, it could make for a life long friendship. I have friends who are 10 or more yrs older, and some who are 10-20 yrs younger than I am. When I was 40 I had a 20 yr old (young) girl for a housemate for maybe 2 yrs. We became fast friends and I consider her part of my family. you might start with 2-3 afternoons a week to see how it goes for all of them.

Tanya,you may have made a life long friend. When my neighbor boy, Christopher, asked me to teach him to garden he was only 9 yrs. old. He gardened in my yard, I gave him his own space, until he got old enough to be involved in sports at school. Christopher is now 16 and mows my grass. I also hire him to work with me in the yard. Last weekend he dug out a Hydrangea and replanted it for me (he is now 6' tall and very strong). He knows how to prepare the hole, wet it thoroughly before setting the plant then filling around the roots with a lot of chopped leaves mixed into the soil then waters thoroughly. He is a delight to have around and loves my tuna salad sandwiches and coleslaw. Young people are a delight and I am happy to have him as my friend. I bet your new friend will be back time and again to learn more about gardening. Thanks for sharing your story Tanya, it warmed my heart.

Nick is in my daughters class at school and she was laughing at the card and that he likes plants. she hates them and thinks they are stupid(plants) i told her not to make fun of him. hopefully she wont. I hope he is my good friend now. his mom seems like a real sweetheart also. they live in town and we live about 3 miles out but she drove him out to bring me the card and cardboard. it really made my day.

My 10 year old really gets into composting and asks for boxes at school that are going to be thrown out.

OMG - I just LOVE that story. It's those kinds of days that make life just so special.

Just imagine, some day he will be married and he and his wife will be gardening (wintersowing..) and he will tell his wife the story of how he met you. You will always be special to him. Nice story.

What wonderful thoughts! I remember the man the first introduced me to dahlia's when i was about 10-12. he was a biker. that was the first flower i loved. now, i've met a wonderful couple who are sharing dahlias with me that i don't have.and i am sharing mine with them. that's what i love most about gardeners and gardening. we are always willing to share. whether it be the gifts of plants or the gifts of knowledge. when i was younger i wanted to make a name for myself and be known. the older i got i really didnt care if i made a name for myself but wondered if anyone would remember me. even if i'm only the flower lady or the lady with the huge garden thats enough for me. and if i can share that love with children who will grow up to be gardeners that is the best thing to happen. Hopefully, my 5 children will someday share the fever with me!!! my second oldest daughter is getting into growing veggies so we will see. Have alovely day!!

I love these stories!!! When my new neighbors (two young girls 4 & 9) came into my backyard with their mom for the first time. The oldest one's eyes got real big and she said...wow this is prettier than Disney World. I was touched, indeed. Now the older girl helps me in the garden with jobs and is learning about different garden plants and such.

Very wonderful! I think all of you are doing a great job at sharing all your knowledge and seeds. Knowing that you are welcoming little hands into your yards makes me even more happy that I found all of you =)
